Discrimination [rant]

okay, so i was typing my history notes up yesterday and i realized something: human beings are actually really terrible.

like actually what the hell?? why do we always need to be discriminating against something? why do we need to hate things? what's the point in hating other people if they have done nothing to you or your loved ones?

what spurred this on was the fact that the history notes i was typing was about slavery. and how white people [at least in america] thought they were better than black people. then, after the civil war and slaves were technically emancipated, they still suffered for hundreds of years [and even today!] due to the racism of other people.

now, for the most part, racism is pretty much gone.

but [up until June 26th, 2015] then discrimination against the lgbt+ community happened and like... what the hell. granted, discrimination is still alive [sadly] for a number of people and just... anger. so much friggin anger because some human beings can't get their heads around the fact that everyone is equal.

i do know that for the most part, many people agree that all human beings are equal. there are still those select few out there still disagree and those are the people who make me mad.

aside from bigger discrimination issues, i'd also like to touch upon teenagers today. now keep in mind, i am also a teenager [i'm 16 ok] and some of these do apply to me no matter how hard i try to keep myself from thinking such thoughts.

but is it really possible to not "judge a book by its cover"?

for human beings, i don't think it's possible, at least not at a first glance.

for example: you see a girl wearing really tight clothes, a lot of makeup, short-shorts, and a really low cut top. what are your first thoughts?

you may know what kind of stereotype i'm trying to point out, but just think about it. society has warped our views and minds by predisposing us to stereotypes such as that in books, tv, radio, any type of media really.

now show that exact same girl to either a person who has been sheltered his/her entire life or a baby. what do you think they see?

they would see a girl. that's it, and that's all she is.

yet i've heard sooo many people [at least in my school] start talking about girls who dress similarly and they're so mean when they don't mean to be.

that girl happens to be a close friend of mine and it angers me to no end when i hear the word "slut" or "try-hard" or even "easy".

like what the fuck shut the hell up you don't know shit about her. she's one of the nicest people i've ever met and is still a virgin!

but people are still super judgemental even though they have no idea what she's really like. and [i've gotten permission to reveal this] they don't know how insecure she is about her looks and every time she hears something like that it breaks her just a little bit more.

granted, she could just stop wearing clothes like that, but that's her style. it's like how i like to walk around school with dress-shirts and neckties, as well as disney-themed clothes. that's just what i like to wear and that's what i'm comfortable in.

those clothes are what she feels most comfortable in.

i've heard people claim they have no insecurities and that they don't care what others think about them, but call me a pessimist, but i don't think that's completely true.

who wouldn't get a little hurt if they heard strangers already making snap-judgements about you, especially if they were bad? what if it was one of your friends who was talking about you?

you could say they're not your friend, but then why would you have been friends with them in the first place? if you actually didn't like them, why would you invest time and effort into that relationship?

this all relates back to my first point: humans are pretty terrible. they have so many predisposed notions about anything and everything, and many people are influenced [especially younger ones!] by others, especially the people they look up to.

like, if someone said: "this cake tastes amazing!" would you be more inclined to try it? even if it didn't look like your cup of tea, if someone was gushing about how good it was, would your curiosity get the better of you and you'd have a bite?

i know i sure would.

and that once again proves how people are influenced in even the smallest things. so if one person begins to think things [for example being a racist], then people who respect that person might start to think that too.

then it spreads like wild fire and soon there'll be another world war on our hands.

thankfully, the world seems to be coming out of this "monkey see monkey do" type thing and more people are making their own judgement calls. but not all of them are necessarily the right ones.

just... i totally lost track of where i was going with this because i took a break to eat some apple crisp [food is great tbh] and i want to end it with this question:

what's the point of hating something?
