Wonderful cover to start off - simplistic, with the tones and dark colours implying some sort of suspense. It gives me an impression of the type of book I'm going to read, and the summary adds to it. It's not an info dump, but just the right amount of info that interests me -- and now I really want to read this book.

Your grammar is perfect, and so is your description and vocabulary - you pace the entire chapter very well, though you have more description in the first half, and the second half seems fairly straight forward and lacks as much detail (as in a variation of vocabulary). It seems as though his life has reverted back to being ordinary (for the moment).

Character voice is brilliant, you've given the reader an insight into the main character and his backstory, and starting with his cat's death is really effective - it's mentioned in the summary, and even now I'm intrigued in what the relevance of it is to the whole plot.

Honestly, I don't even have very much to say - you've pulled the first chapter off very well!
