The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
"The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" by John Boyne
Review:
"Just because a man glances up at the sky at night does not make him an astronomer, you know."
The Holocaust was a very heartbreaking event in history where many had to suffer from the event and its after-effects. The boy in the stripped pajamas has the main character Bruno who is the son of a German Nazi soldier as they move their house to live near "out-with" a camp which is surrounded by a gate that seems to go on for miles and miles on end. One day as Bruno is exploring, he meets a boy with a gray face, no hair, and stripped pajamas.
This story is truly heartbreaking because not only is it a sad story, but it's based on a true event. This stuff actually happened. People were locked up and tortured with labor and beatings. Two best friends share stories while they can't really touch and play with each other because of the fact that there is a gate dividing them. You learn how hard it is for this nine-year-old child in the actual concentration camp and how some people (like the nine-year-old out of the concentration camp) seemed to not really understand what was actually going on in these concentration camps. Would recommend this book to anyone who believes that not every story ends in a happy ending.
