GEORGE'S EARS PIQUED as the sound of hooves thundering against the coarse dirt of the earth sounded, his feet taking him from the entrance of the Windsor to the top of the entrance stairs, head angling to peer around the large hedge of bushes that hid his future brides carriage. There it came, black and lined with gold, the carriage shone in the yellow rays of sun.
George could only ponder the girl that sat within it, the girl that held his heart in her hands thought his eyes were yet to be graced by her face. His breath hitched as his thoughts got led with a peculiar blind faith.
His future bride, who sat, fiddling with her fingers in front of her, in the carriage, had similar, but different thoughts. Marriages could be happy. Her parent taught and showed her that everyday, but they were lord and lady. Would a marriage to a King be the same. Venus had been so lost in her train of thoughts that she hadn't noticed that they carriage stilled beneath her, that was until her mother placed a hand on her fidgeting ones, moving to keep them still.
"My lover, we're here." Her mother spoke gently, causing the girl to looked up at her parent who sat in front of her, looking at her gently and expectantly.
"Oh." Venus let the noise out in a small hushed whisper, nodding her her parents, showing them she was ready.
Her father nodded towards her, before giving a small knock to the wooden carriage door, alerting the footmen to open it. At its acknowledgement, the door was pulled open, allowing the sunlight to scatter around inside the carriage.
George's heart beat a mile a minute, his feet defying him and carrying him down the stairs, ignoring the stairs from servants and guards alike. He gave a small tap to the footman, motioning for him to move, taking his place.
Venus got up from her seat, slightly hunching over inside the small carriage, turning towards the exit. For guidance, she grasped the hand that was held out for her, to help her to the grounds outside the carriage. She stepped down the steps of the carriage feet planting against the soil. Her hand should've left the footman's by now, but the lack of cotton fabric covering the hand she held caused her to turn to the footman in confusion. The person in front of her elicited a gasp from her lips. Her hand was being held by the King.
At her shocked face, George smiled before letting go of her hand and backing up, bowing in front of her.
"Hello Venus," George said gently, through his smile, "I'm George."
"Your Majesty." Venus spoke, moving to curtsy, to which George took hold of her hand to stop.
"There is no need." George kept hold of her hand as she re-straightened herself. "And it's George. Just George. I mean yes, Your Majesty, but to you, just George." George stated.
"I'm sorry, had I known you were the King I would've gotten down on my own." Venus explained.
"The 'King' situation, it towers over us. Accident of birth on my part. But I thought, maybe, perhaps, as my wife you could ignore it, and I could be 'Just George' to you. Besides, that is no such thing for a lady as yourself to do." George paused, "I had thought for a second you would've stayed in the carriage."
"I'm sorry for that,...George" She spoke the name with hesitance, that caused him to go silent with the smile still plastered on his face. At his silence, Venus grew worried and confused, "What is it?" She questioned.
"You are imcomparable." George answered, "Perhaps too beautiful to marry me, people will talk." Venus blushed at his words, causing a smirk to grow on Georges face. He bent down, lifting her hand up to his lips, feathering a kiss to it. "I look forward to our marriage, Venus." He said, standing back up straight.
"As do I George." Venus smiled.
The two had just been looking at each other when a throat was cleared behind them. Looking up the steps, the two found Georges mother, Princess Augusta, looking down at them with a stern look on her face.
"Come along." She spoke, turning and beginning to walk inside the castle. George continued to hold her hand, and led her up the stairs, before coming to a stop at the top. "Till we meet again, my lady." George spoke, flashing his brightest smile before finally separating their palms, walking down the left hallway with his kings men following behind him.
Venus held a look as her eyes trailed after him. Her daydream was interrupted with a loud, 'ahem' coming from down the right hallway.
"Oh." Venus let out, turning and following after Princess Augustine, her parents following behind her.
They entered inside a large and exquisitely decorated room, and Venus took to the middle of it, her parents going to stand behind the high lords of the court.
The room was silent, besides the sound of Princesses Augustine's heals clicking against the floor as she walked around Venus, examining her. She wrapped around, and stopped standing in front of her.
"Teeth." She spoke. Venus's brow inched up a bit, before she pealed her lips back in a smile, showcasing her white teeth. "Mm-hmm."
"Hands." She then held her hands out, showing them off. Augustine motioned them to turn them over, and gave a short examination before her hands dropped back to her her side. "Mm-hmm."
Princess Augustine them placed her hands on the girls hips, twisting the girls body roughly. "You have good hips. You will make lots of babies." She pointed her closed fan at her, "That is good." She began to circle her once more, "That is your job. As many babies as possible for my son."
"Yes, your highness." Venus curtly spoke.
Venus nodded at the woman's bluntness, and stayed quiet, but her mothers voice spoke up for her, "When is the wedding?"
"Tomorrow." The princess bluntly answered, walking around Venus. The princess paused, turning towards a man fitted in gold and red.
"Brimsley," The man stepped forward. "Take Venus to the seamstress, so we can have her gown fitted." The princess then turned and left, taking the lords of the court with her.
"Tomorrow." Venus restated, turning to her parents.
"Yes, tomorrow, and you will be gorgeous, my love." Lord Peter said, walking up to his daughter, placing his hands on her shoulder.
"Yes." Her mother spoke, walking forward, "By the looks of it, the King is already in love with you, there is nothing to be worried about." Her mother then took her hands, "Now come on," She began, walking her towards the door, "we must see the dress."
And so the mother and daughter duo left, with Brimsley just five paces behind them.
THE DRESS WAS beautiful. Especially on her, a pearl white, decorated with gold trim and diamonds decorating the chest piece. The waist dipping in the clench around the girls figure. And layers upon layers were the skirts that weighed heavy on her frame, a cape-train of satin white, with gold images decorating it, flowed behind her like a wave. Her hair had been fitted like royalty, curls let out to lightly bounce in regalness as she walked.
Her hand was held by her fathers as the two slowly walked down through the aisle. Her head was held high, ignoring the looks of admiration from the crowd and only looking forward towards George.
His face held a gentle, but bright smile, as he beheld his bride walking towards him. Venus and Lord Peter stopped in front of George, and bowed, "Beautiful" was the word Venus saw George mouth before she turned to her father, letting him place a kiss on her forehead, before he stepped back as took his place beside her mother.
Venus turned to George, who held his hand out for her to take. She took his hand and the two began to walk up the stairs towards the Archbishop. The two turned towards each other, allowing the archbishop to say his piece as they stared brightly at each other.
The two soon knelt before the alter, their heads still turned to each other, but at the sound of their 'I do''s being needed, the both of them spoke up, before getting back to their feet. The rings being presented on a gold decorated pillow. Venus picked up her ring first, and slid it on George's ring finger, to which George did the same with hers, before clasping her hand in both of his.
And with the words of the Archbishop pronouncing them man and wife, the two leaned into each other sealing the vow with a kiss, as the crowd applauded and the bells tolled.
THE WEDDING FESTIVITIES had just ended, and the newly wedding couple, and a couple entourages stood outside, sending their goodbyes to all who began to leave.
Venus' smile brightened as a familiar face came into her view. "Oh, Agatha." Venus stated, smiling brightly at the woman.
"Your Majesty." Agatha grinned, curtsying.
"I'm so glad you came." Venus took her hands in hers.
"Oh, well, I got a personal invite." The smirked at each other.
Princess Augusta spoke up from her place on the other side of George, "You personally invited her?" She had a hint of annoyance in her tone.
"Why would I not? She has been a long time, great, friend." Venus answered, before turning back to Agatha, "You must be added to my court."
Agatha's face grew shocked. "Your Majesty, I'm not even a Lady of the ton."
"I'm sure my husband can change that." Venus looked up at George, expectantly.
"Of course." George started, "Your husband was friends with my father was he not?" George looked over at the man, who had already made his way towards his carriage, and was waiting expectantly for his wife.
"He was." Agatha answered.
"Then he shall be made Lord." George quickly spoke, waving his hand over at the man, for him to come towards them, "Lord Danbury of the Ton." George spoke once the man was in front of them, next to his wife.
"Oh," Lord Danbury spoke with surprise, "Thank you, Your Majesty." He bowed, his wife curtsying with him.
"I'll also be honored to be having your wife, Lady Danbury, as part of my court." Venus spoke, earning more shock from the newly made Lord.
"Oh, Thank you. Thank you." He said, bowing once more, before beginning to make his way back to the carriage, "Come on, Agatha."
Instead of following, Agatha leaned into Venus, in the looks of wanting a private conversation. "Just know-" Agatha spoke, "-that if you send for me, I shall come." Venus hummed and nodded in response, as Lord Danbury called back out for Agatha.
"Make haste, Agatha."
"Coming, my dear."
Upon Lady Agatha's departure, Venus' parents stepped forward, with bright smiles on their faces.
"You were gorgeous, my love." Wendy spoke to her daughter.
"Flawless." Peter commented, pulling his daughter in for a hug, kissing the top of her head.
"We're only one letter away, whenever you need us." Her mother spoke, running a hand down the side of her face, resting her palm on it.
"We love you, Venus." The family, shared grins, before the two departed and went to their carriage, waving at her through the window as they rolled off down the roll.
Venus stared off at the carriage, before feeling a hand maneuver its way into hers, to which Venus took her other hand to cover it.
"I have a surprise for you." George spoke.
"A surprise? Oh I do love surprises." Venus turned towards him.
"You should need your cloak." George added.
Venus smiled before turning back forward, saying another round of goodbyes, before the two made their way to their own carriage, earning applause as they moved through the crowd. of guest.
Venus turned from the window to George, "What is the surprise, I wish to know where your taking me."
"You will see, just wait." The two chuckled lightly, before Venus turned back to look out the window, George doing the same after a second.
The two soon rolled up to a large palace, the outside decorated with red and gold, with bowls of fire lighting it up.
George got out first, before helping Venus out as well. He smile at her before turning to look at the large estate. "What do you think."
"It is beautiful."
"Oh, well I had it redesigned, just for you. Suppose it's as beautiful as its muse." George began to lead her up the stairs.
Venus smiled at his compliment, before turning back towards the entrance, "Is this our house, George?"
"It is your house." George turned to her.
"My house? What do you mean?"
"This is where you shall live. I had all of your things moved here during the ceremony."
"Aren't we supposed to live together? As man and wife?" Venus took a step forward, "Isn't this supposed to be our house."
"I suppose officially, St James's Palace is our house, but this is where you shall stay."
"And where will you stay?"
"I have an estate in Kew." George pointed.
"So, you shall be in Kew?"
"Yes."
"And I shall be here?"
"Yes." George turned, beginning to climb the stairs once more.
"But it is our wedding night." Venus spoke up, climbing a few stairs.
George stopped and turned back to her. "And it is late. And you've been traveling and I should let you get inside. You'll need to meet your staff. You'll..." George paused, "Want to get some sleep."
"No, George, it is our wedding night and I would wish to get to know my husband." Venus stated, walking up the stairs towards him. "And, we are supposed..." She stopped, "Are we not supposed to do what married people do?" She didn't quite know what married people do, but she knew they were supposed to stay with each other.
"Are you demanding I perform my marital duty to you?" George questioned.
"Demanding? A marital duty? I just..." Venus paused, sparing the ground a look, before her eyes went back to George, "Do we not spend this night together? My mama and governess said that is what happens on our wedding night. And then the same with the rest of the nights afterwards." The two dissolved into silence, Venus' smile fading.
"Fine." George broke the silence, "I shall stay." He turned and began to march up the stairs.
"George," Venus began, picking up her skirts to follow after him.
"I said I shall stay. Are you coming?" George questioned, not looking back at her.
The two entered the entrance hall, getting welcomed with servants and their clapping hands, Venus did her best to keep up her appearances, smiling at some of the maids, before focusing back on her husband.
"George." Venus called, "George." She continued to follow his fast footsteps, careful to make sure she didn't fall in her heels. "George, please slow down, I don't want to trip, I cannot keep up."
"I thought you wanted me in the bedroom," George abruptly stopped and turned to her, causing her in turn to stop, "is that not where I should be?"
"No."
"No?"
"Not if you're going to act..." Venus stopped, turning to look back at the servants, who still stood in their lines, before turning back to George. "You are upset. What is wrong? Have I done something wrong? Whatever I have done, I am sorry."
"You've done nothing to be sorry for. I just- I- I want to go to kew."
"Then let us go to Kew." Venus began to turn.
"No, I-"
"You do not want me to go to Kew with you?" Venus questioned.
"This is your home." He motioned to the room they stood in.
"And that is supposed to be yours?"
"Yes."
"I see." Venus spoke, with a sigh.
"You do. Good. So you are alright."
A pause took place, before George began to walk past her, back towards the entrance to leave. "I shall speak with you later."
"I see but I do not understand. I... George," The man in questioned turned back to her, "is this how it is to be? Our marriage? You there and me here?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I thought it..." George's words faltered as he saw her disappointed look. "It is easier."
"What is easier, and for whom."
"What?" George leaned forward.
"Easier for whom?" She paused, "You or me."
"I'm not going to debate this with you."
"All I want is to understand. You need to just tell me-"
"I do not need to do anything." George raised his voice, "I decide. I have decided. I am your King!" He exclaimed.
Venus' expression held shock, before her face stilled of emotion. "My apologies, I thought you were 'just George'. Forgive me, Your Majesty." She took a slight step back, and deeply curtsied.
"Venus." George spoke, regret behind his tone.
"May I withdraw, Your Majesty or do you have more to say to me?"
George took a step forward, and Venus took a step back.
George shrugged his shoulders in disappointment, "Venus, this is for the best."
"Of course, Your Majesty. What ever you wish."
George took a deep look at her, before turning back towards the exit, his steps hesitant as he took his leave.
Venus' face turned to sadness as she watched him leave, before she turned and continued walking down the hallway. She had thought herself to be alone, had the sound of her own shoes clicking against the ground, was joined with another pair, and so Venus turned back and found the man dressed in gold and red.
"Brimsley, isn't it?" She remembered him from when she had her gown fitted.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"You're here? Why?"
"I am wherever you are, Your Majesty."
"Oh," Venus said, before turning back around, continuing her walk to her bedroom, Brimsley following behind. "You don't need to follow me."
"Oh, but I shall, Your Majesty."
"There is no need for you to call me, 'Your Majesty'."
"You are the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, Your Majesty. I cannot call you anything else." Brimsley countered.
"Then stop following me."
"I cannot do that, Your Majesty."
Venus turned towards the man, "As your Queen, I command you to stop following me."
"It is my sworn duty to take care of you, Your Majesty, at all times."
"Well then stop. I do not want you looming over me, 'at all times'."
"I hope in time you'll become used to me, Your Majesty."
Venus' eyes held tears that she blinked away. "Amazing." She turned and began to walk once more. "We can spend the rest of our days together."
