You are My Sunshine (11th!Doctor x Reader)

You turned the pages of your current book while humming the familiar tune of 'You Are My Sunshine' to yourself. You didn't notice the Doctor had come in, until he broke your comfortable silence with a question, "What is that? I mean, what song is that? The one that you're humming. Though, it might be a better question to ask what tune is that, considering it might not have lyrics. Or you might have made it up, so I guess I should ask-"

"You Are My Sunshine," you cut him off with a giggle. The Doctor looked bewildered for a moment before realizing you were answering his original question.

"Oh. Well, it sounds lovely. Could you teach it to me?"

Now it was your turn to look bewildered. After shaking yourself out of your shock, you replied, "Well, I guess I could. It's a simple enough song."

The Doctor grinned and sat down next to you, eager to learn something new. You smiled and began the little lesson with, "My mother taught me this song because I loved it so much. She sang me to sleep with it. Now, the song goes like this: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine..."

The Doctor repeated the line in a sing-song voice, and it made you smile. So back and forth like that, you went. Your two voices echoing through the TARDIS.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Oddly enough, it became the Doctor's favorite song too. In a way, it became your song. Though neither of you would ever admit that. But there was no way you could avoid the fact that the song certainly did follow you both.

It just sort of happened. Whenever you were in the TARDIS or walking on the surface (or not the surface) of a foreign planet, one of you would start humming and it would spin from that. Whether you wanted to admit it or not, it was your song.

One day, you and the Doctor were leaving a party on Earth and were on your way back to the TARDIS. You passed under a bridge and came across a mugging. A man was holding a gun to a woman. Of course, you both immediately ran to help.

The Doctor tried desperately to talk the man down, but it wasn't working very well. The man just seemed to become angrier.

You saw that the man was escalating, and you knew he would do something dangerous. Just as the man peaked in his rage and fired the gun, you jumped in front of the Doctor.

You heard the woman scream, and the Doctor yelled before you fell to the ground, grasping the bleeding wound in pain and shock. Hazily, you noticed the Doctor scared the gunman away with his shouting.

The Doctor sounded angry, and a bit frightened. But then the pain settled in as shock washed away. You gasped and the Doctor was immediately at your side. He told you to stay calm, reassuring you that you would be okay, but you knew you wouldn't.

The girl was tried to call the authorities, as the Doctor held you in his arms. You could hear him telling you to stay with him, but you were fading fast. The Doctor knew it too and scooped you up. The girl told him that the authorities were coming, but he ignored her and ran to the TARDIS. The jostling hurt, but you didn't have the strength to complain.

The Doctor sat you down in the TARDIS and rushed to the controls. You felt the ship taking off, but then the darkness enveloped you.

You could only think about how glad you were that the last thing you would hear was the sound of the TARDIS' beautiful whirring.

The Doctor sat by your bedside. He had taken you to the best hospital in the universe, but even after they had healed the wound, you wouldn't wake up. The nurse told him that since you were so far gone when he brought you, they had done everything they could. She said it was up to you to wake up.

The Doctor kept berating himself. He thought it was his fault. That he should have gotten you there sooner before you went unconscious in the TARDIS.

It was another day at the hospital. The Doctor hadn't left your side, and the nurses had to bring him meals. At least they never told him to leave. He'd hate to cause a scene, but he would if it meant fighting to stay by your side.

Today the Doctor was especially tired. All he wanted was for you to wake up. He didn't want to lose you. He couldn't lose you.

Suddenly, a tune appeared in the Doctor's head. He started to hum it. Then he began to sing to you.

He sang to you, your song. The song you shared.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away..."

There was darkness. Then there was a song. You could hear it, and it sounded familiar, but you couldn't quite place it. You could tell it was special to you, too. But why? Finally, you recognized the voice singing. It was the Doctor. The wonderful man you had fallen in love with.

As the Doctor sang, your consciousness floated up from the darkness.

The Doctor finished the song near tears. You opened your eyes and turned to look at him. When you saw his tears, you said, "Please don't cry, Doctor. I hate seeing you cry."

Shocked, the Doctor almost fell out of his chair. You laughed softly, glad to see he was happy again. He was so happy, in fact, he started crying again. You sat up slowly and embraced him, and he hugged you back, tightly. When he pulled away, he scolded you, "Y/N, never do that again! You scared me! I- I thought I'd lose you... I can't lose you..." You smiled weakly, and as you were about to promise you wouldn't do it again, the Doctor suddenly blurted, "Because I love you. I can't lose you... because I love you..."

Your eyes widened in shock, but you quickly overcame it. You placed a quick kiss on his lips, and replied, "I love you too, Doctor." He grinned and kissed you on the forehead.

"Alright, let's see if we can get you checked out of here."

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Please don't take my sunshine away
