The Marimba iPhone ringtone echoed through the room, startling Bucky from his dazed, half asleep state on the couch. Groggily, he reached for his phone on the coffee table beside him and brought it in front of his face. As soon as he saw the caller ID, though, he immediately answered, "Y/N. Hey. How's the mission?" Although he tried his best to perk up for the love of his life, Bucky couldn't help a small yawn from escaping his mouth at the end of the greeting. A laugh reverberated on the other side of the call, followed by, "I'm sorry. Did I wake you? Should I call back later?"

"No! No! I was waiting for your call actually. Your couch is just really comfortable, that's all..."

Though he couldn't see her face, he could feel her smiling when she replied, "Ah, alright then." Bucky stood up and walked over to the kitchen, opening the fridge as he asked, "So, why're you calling, doll? Is there a problem with the mission, or what?"

There was a pause. Then she replied, "It's been a long day, Bucky. And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again, okay? I promise. But to summarize, no, everything's fine. All the bad guys have been taken care of." He smiled silently at her way of referring to anyone she had to fight on her solo missions. "I just wanted to talk to you. That's all."

"Well, that's nice. Are you on your way back? When should I expect you home? Maybe I can make us dinner?" Bucky continued to survey the refrigerator and cabinets, already thinking of recipes to try, something he liked to do with Y/N, now that he had his memories back.

"Calm down soldier." She laughed lightly, "I don't think I'll be back tonight. Paperwork and debriefings and stuff. The usual."

She sighed and he asked, "You okay?"

"What? Oh, yeah. I just... I was just thinking about how we met." Bucky grimaced, "Don't bring that up. I tried to kill you. Multiple times." He slammed the refrigerator door shut, after looking through it for the third time. He hated to think about how he treated his girlfriend when they first ran into each other. Of course, they didn't actually "run" into each other. He was a brainwashed assassin sent to bring her body into Hydra, dead or alive. Of course, it also wasn't his fault, but he couldn't ignore he'd done it.

"But look how far we've come," she was saying, "We went from enemies to colleagues to friends to being in a relationship. That has to mean something, right?"

Bucky dropped himself back onto the couch, nodding silently before realizing she couldn't see him and replying, "Yeah. It means a lot."

"Like we've formed a bond that can never be broken, right?"

"What's with the poetry? Of course, nothing is going to break us up. Or 'break our bond' as you would say, apparently."

She chuckled on the other side of the world, or in the next city over. Who knows where her mission took her?

"Alright, no need to be sarcastic, I was just asking."

"And I was just answering."

"Ha. Ha."

He chuckled to himself, and she soon joined in.

Then there was a lapse in their conversation. Neither of them spoke for a moment. Bucky's trained senses picked up an echoing sound though, possibly a warehouse or other large, empty space.

Y/N coughed, "Um, I have to go Buck. I'll see you soon. And I'll tell you all about my mission, ok?"

"Yeah, sure. I can't wait to see you. Bye, doll." He began to hang up, but she stopped him.

"James?"

The use of his first name startled him, and he froze for just a second. Then he managed to reply, "Uh-huh?"

She paused again, struggling to find words. Finally, she took a deep breath and said, "James Buchanan Barnes, I-I love you." He breathed in sharply, not sure that he'd heard her right. But he did. Using his full name and everything, she finally said she loved him.

Noticing the long pause he'd taken just to process her words, the ex-assassin snapped back to reality and quickly replied, "I love you too, Y/N."

He heard her sigh in relief. She'd probably been waiting in agony on the other side. He knew how anxious and nervous she could be, and he hated being the cause of it. "Alright, well. I'll see you soon, okay?"

Another pause. Then, "Goodbye, Bucky. I love you." She answered, probably trying to get used to words.

"Bye, doll." He hung up, relaxing on the couch and thinking of the amazing things to come.

Location Classified:

You ended the call and dropped the phone onto the concrete floor next to your gun, not caring if it broke now. Slumped against a crumbling wall, bodies of thugs littering the ground not far away, you tried to breathe. With your other hand, you placed more pressure on your abdomen. You gasped at the sharp pain that flashed through your body, originating from the bullet wound in your stomach. Although you applied as much pressure as you could, you still felt yourself growing weak. Biting back screams and tears and curses, you shifted your focus to something that would calm you.

Bucky.

Refusing to let any of the pain or sadness be on your mind in your last moments, you began to whisper to yourself, "I love you, Bucky. I will always love you, and only you. Never will anyone else matter to me as much as you." You gasped again at the pain, knowing you would be gone soon. But still, you pushed those thoughts away. You continued, "I love you, Bucky. James Barnes, I love you.

I love you.

I love you.

I love you.

I love you, Bucky..."

With your dying breaths, James Buchanan Barnes was the last thought in your mind, and the last name on your lips.
