There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired lonely place

Another ridiculous Gala thrown by your parents. They had more money than they knew what to do with, and loved to spend it. Mostly on "Charity Balls." Of course you always had to be dragged into it. And to make it worse, they wanted you to find a man. Preferably a rich one to share his money with your family. So there you were, with your awkward gown that your mother had picked out for you. It was long, black, and one shouldered. It had a sheer see-through back, and was Chiffon beaded, but that wasn't the problem. The problem was the embarrassing slit that went up your leg. You felt so exposed, and could practically feel all the men in the room staring at you. It made your stomach twist and turn with nervousness.
For a while, you tried to enjoy the party.
That. Did not. Work.
You mingled the best you could. Of course, you had developed an amazing ability to force laughter and fake smiles, but that was all they were. Forced and fake. You hated every part of this party, and just wanted to escape it.
Men would approach you, and ask you to dance. You agreed to a few of the kinder ones, but most were stuck up and you refused to dance with them. Earning disapproving glares from your mother.
Finally, you couldn't take it any more. You had to leave the room. So you did. As soon as the song was over, you left your dancing partner and escaped to the balcony.
You relished the fresh air. The night sky always seemed to calm you. And the stars. The stars were the best part. They always seemed to be shining. As if they knew that they were the only things you could depend on. You spent a few more moments in the crisp night air, hearing the party continue behind you. All too soon, you had to leave. You knew if you didn't show your face soon, your mother would come looking for you. And she would certainly make a spectacle of it. That was the last thing you wanted. With a sigh, you slowly drifted away from the balcony and back into the party.

Walls of insincerity,
Shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face

You stood on the wide, curling stairs over looking the room, sipping punch. You were tired of dancing and just wanted the night to be over so that you could leave. Or at least so your body could leave. Your mind, and perhaps soul, were already somewhere else entirely.
The walls you had put up were still working, and no one noticed your insincerity. Your eyes shifted around the room, not really looking at anything, just scanning the many faces you had seen before. Then something caught your attention from across the ballroom. It was a man. A man you had never seen at one of these endless parties for certain. You could feel your walls come crumbling down as you took in the ridiculously handsome man.

All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you

Your eyes whispered, "Have we met?"
Across the room your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts

The man turned and made eye contact with you. His eyes seemed to convey curiosity and slight amusement as he looked you over. His eyebrows raised as he made his way across the dance floor toward you. You gathered yourself, expecting another man wishing to be your suitor. You were ready to refuse, even if he was quite a looker.
As he got closer, he grabbed a glass of wine from a server's tray with a spin, and took a sip. Apparently he didn't like the taste, because he promptly spit it back into the glass and looked around for another server. Finally he found one and set it on the tray, mumbling a few words to the servant. This whole ordeal made you laugh softly, and you wondered what he must be like up close. Soon it looked as if you would find out, as he sashayed the rest of the way up to you.
You decided to start the conversation, "Don't worry. I'm not one for wine either." He looked at you with a questioning face and you lifted your glass of punch. It seemed to jog his memory, "Oh yes! I don't understand how people can drink it. It is quite awful, and terribly bitter." Another laugh escaped your lips at this odd man. You wanted so desperately to learn more about him.
You peered at the man's face again and asked, "Have we met? You look awfully familiar."
"Nope. Never been here in this time. And I have never met you. Which is a shame. You seem like quite an interesting person to meet," he gave you a charming smile. You returned it without thinking. Something from his comment made you think though, "This time? What ever could you mean?" He only gave you a smug smile as a reply.
You both quieted down and retreated into your own thoughts. You turned and surveyed the room again. When you looked over at the man, he was watching the dance floor. You began to watch as well. The people below glided across the ballroom. The women's dresses swaying, and the men holding them tightly. The man broke the silence and asked, "So. Are you enjoying the party?" You pulled your eyes away from the hypnotic circles the dancers made and looked at him. You replied with a tinge of sadness, "Not really. No."
The man frowned and asked, "Why not? It's a lovely evening!"
You gave a half hearted smile and told him, "It's not as lovely if you've seen it all before."
A smug smile lit his face as he replied, "Oh, you haven't seen it all. Maybe you've seen this," he gestured widely to the party, "but you haven't seen everything."
Your brows furrowed and he gave you a wink before saying, "Perhaps the Lady would like to walk with me?"
He seemed to be changing the subject as he put out his arm for you to take. You raised your eyebrows, but played along, "I believe she would."

And it was enchanting to meet you
All I can say is I was enchanted to meet you

You had been walking with this man for what seemed like hours. He was so strange, yet he made you laugh and feel so full of life. You walked through the gardens and he told you unbelievable stories that you thought he had to have made up. But they made you laugh until your sides ached. He made you laugh. His quicks and funny faces seemed to make your heart swell with happiness.
After telling him a bit more about yourself and your own life, you found yourselves back in your mansion, wandering the halls. Particularly at this moment, the Portrait Hall. Where all of your ancestors and their exploits were recorded.
While the man was in the midst of a hilarious story about giant toad colonies having political issues with bees, you noticed a painting on the wall. You stopped and stared at it, lost in your thoughts.
The man noticed your absence beside him and stopped a few feet away. He turned back and found you staring in awe at a certain portrait. Out of curiosity, he strode over and glanced at it as well. Once he saw what it depicted, he looked over at you to gauge your reaction.
You turned your head slightly to look at him. Without turning your head again, you flicked your eyes back to the painting. After taking it in for a few more moments, and a couple of questioning looks at the man, you took a deep breath and said, "I knew your face was familiar. I must have passed this portrait a million times in my life. But how can this be?! Are you related to Sir John Smith?" He gave you another smug smile, for what seemed like the millionth time that night, and replied, "You could say that." You narrowed your eyes but decided to ignore the comment.

It wasn't long after that the gala came to an end. You felt your heart sink as you bid farewell to the man, from the staircase that you had said hello on. You watched him walk across the ballroom floor, behind the other guests on their way out.
Suddenly your mother was beside you. She was going on about how you hadn't danced with nearly as many 'presentable suitors' as she hoped. You only half listened to what she said, considering most of it was complaints about you. Then she asked you a question that caught your attention, "What was his name? That man that you disappeared with, halfway through the party? I do hope he was someone important. Or at least wealthy." You ignored her rude comments about the man and answered her question truthfully, "I don't know. How odd. It never occurred to me to ask his name."
"You don't know his name?! That's ridiculous! You disappear into the night, doing who-knows-what with a man, and you don't bother to ask his name?!"
You whip your head to face the woman and exclaim, "Mother! How dare you suggest such a thing! I would never! Especially not with a man I'd just met!"
Your mother shrugged with a bored look, and replied, "How should I know what you do? Your head filled with those silly stories. I'm surprised you didn't turn out worse."
You took a deep breath through the nose and let it out through your mouth. You couldn't help but snap at your mother, "Don't you have some other party to plan."
She quickly jabbed back, "Watch your tongue girl. If you come crying to me with a baby in your arms, I will not let you walk through those doors and disgrace this family." Her tone was dark and vicious. You didn't look at her as you took the scolding. You knew she was completely serious and you expected it from her, but you couldn't help a feeling of betrayal and a few hot tears of anger and sadness from building behind your eyes. You mumbled, "I'm going to bed," and dashed off to your bedroom.

And now I'm pacing back and forth
Wishing you were at my door
I'd open up and you would say, "Hey,
It was enchanting to meet you,
All I know is I was enchanted to meet you."

You laid awake on your bed for hours, wondering who that man was, and if you'd ever see him again. You began to wonder if he had someone waiting for him. A lady he fancied, or fancied him. It was very likely. He was a handsome and charming man, who must have many women calling his name. You knew you should stop entertaining the idea that you would ever see him again. Even if you could search for him, where would you start? You didn't have a name to work with. Just the memory of his face. The story of Cinderella came to mind.
By now you could not lie still. You had gotten up and started to pace around your room. Unlike Prince Charming, you didn't have a slipper to try on everyone in town. But Oh! How you wished he would come to your door and whisk you away!
All of the sudden, you heard a strange noise coming from the gardens outside your window. It sounded like a wheezing old man. You opened the doors to your balcony and cautiously stepped out. You peered over the wrought iron railing and saw a blue box in front of the fountain.
You barely had time to take it in, when the door opened. Ducking slightly, so that you wouldn't be seen by the stranger, you continued to spy on them as they stepped out. You squinted to get a better look, but they had turned away from you. Desperate to see their face, you chanted in your head Turn around. Turn around. Finally, the man tuned to look at your house. You barely contained a gasp as you realized that the man was the stranger from the party.
You couldn't help yourself from leaning over your balcony railing and calling to him, "It's you! I can't believe it! It really is you!" The man noticed you and approached your balcony with a large grin on his face. Before he could even get out a greeting, you leaned just a bit too far forward, and toppled off the balcony. You didn't even have time to scream, expecting a sudden death. Thinking how cruel it was that you would die without knowing the man's name.
Right before you hit the ground, the strange man in your garden bolted forward and caught you. Your force brought him to his knees. You opened your eyes to find him staring down at you with worry. When he saw that you were fine, he smiled with relief. You had to return the smile, trying to calm your racing heart by saying, "Well that's one way to get down." He laughed and you soon joined in, letting yourself relax.
Suddenly, you noticed you were still in his arms. You blushed and the man seemed to notice as well. He released you and then helped you off the ground. You brushed yourself off and looked up at the man. He had changed out of his formal wear and looked much more comfortable with himself. You finally asked, "What are you doing back here?" He seemed to be struck with realization and rushed to answer, "Yes! Of course! Good question. Well, you see. I had such a nice time at the party. With you. That I was just wondering? If you would like to travel with me?" You were taken aback. This stranger had practically just asked you to run away with him in the middle of the night. Sure, you had just wished for that earlier... You looked up at the sky. The stars were still shining, twinkling. Almost as if to say, Your welcome. You smiled and returned your gaze to the man.
You thought for a moment, weighing the pros and cons, then finally replied, "I would love to travel with you." His face brightened with hope and excitement. Then you added, "Only!" His face fell and you continued, "Only if you answer this one question." He looked up at you and and rushed out, "Of course! What is it? Anything!" You grinned and asked the most important question of the night, "What is your name, sir?"
The most ridiculous and childish grin lit up the man's face as he joyfully replied, "I'm the Doctor. Just the Doctor. And you are?" He put out his hand. You giddily replied, "Y/N. Y/N L/N." You put your hand on his and was shocked when he brought it to his lips and kissed your knuckles. He released your hand and said, "Well then, Y/N L/N, shall we be going?" You knew you should interrogate him further, before you went who knows where with him, but you trusted the stars. And you wanted this more than anything.
The man walked over to the blue box and beckoned you with his hand before disappearing inside. You strode forward and wondered for a moment what he was doing, but you ignored it and stepped inside.
If someone else was in that garden, all they would hear is the sound of a girl's gasp mixing with a wheezing piano, before wind blew the leaves around and the blue box disappeared.

I'll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
