The centurion

This is for my fellow Shadowhunters!

Disclaimer: I do not own the idea of shaowhunter or really any of this (characters, setting, etc.). That all belongs to Cassandra Claire (we bow to the Queen of fantasy).  This is purely fan fiction .

P.S. I wrote most of this before I knew there was going to be a wicked powers series. I know Jessa's daughter is supposed to be babes Minnie or whatever but I like Sophie and this is a fan fiction.

Kit

On the peaceful April evening, Kit wandered down the streets of Portland. It was nice in Oregon, much different than California. The twisting roads of the shoreside city had became familiar to him over the past three years. He could recall countless times he'd walked this road down to the pier with Tessa and Sophie.

However, today he was not walking that road with the little girl he called sister and her mother. No, he was alone. An errand to run, Jem called it. Kit just hoped that this errand would not involve a run in with demons.

Kit took a left on the dock so he was walking up the stairs of the Pier. It was always crowded here. Kit later found that the Starbucks was the most popular spot for visiting tourists. After all, who wouldn't want to see the first ever Starbucks?

Kit, on the other hand, preferred to venture along the docks or take Sophie on the Ferris wheel. Or, like today, enter the market filled with busy people and unique shops. Perhaps he liked that particular part of the pier because it reminded him of the shadow market, a place that will always be apart of Kit.

He heard the familiar call of salesmen as he neared the market and he put an extra step into his stride. Tessa warned him not to stay out too long. Heavens, she worried like she was his own mother. It's not like he'll be killed. Well, it was exactly like that but she didn't have to be such a worry wart.

Kit smiled innerly at the thought of Tessa and Jem who had welcomed him into their family so willingly. Sometimes he regretted leaving the L.A. institute but then he would look at Sophie and remember just what he'd gained by joining the Gray-Carstiars.

Remembering the task at hand, Kit entered the market and felt as if he were being sucked into another world. Hundreds of shops made up the Pier 1 market. People selling jelwery, others crops from their early harvests and even more people flailing their fish around calling out prices and sizes. The one thing Kit disliked about the market was the smell of fish that sometimes lingered in the air.

With a faint smile on his lips, Kit headed towards the shop he knew would have the thing he was looking for. In the moment, out of the corner of his eye he swore he saw a flash of familiar black hair and his heart leapt. He spun around to see a boy with his back turned and headphones rapped around his neck. Kit felt something knot inside him. Could it be? After all these years? But why would he be—

Kits train of thought cane to a halt as the boy turned around he saw his brown eyes. Kit shook his head and kept moving, ashamed that he let himself hope. Maybe one day the boy he called friend would see him again but, Kit knew, that day would not be today.

Ty was a common thought that occupied Kits mind. He was still confused about things were between them. There was so much anger and disappointment in Ty's eyes the past time he spoke with him. Kit wondered if he missed him as much as he did, then he would remember that night at Magnus and Alec's wedding where he seemed perfectly happy without Kit.

Kit shook his head to erase the growing thoughts of his old friend as he reached his destination. The shop was painted with bright pastel colours that made it stand out amongst the brown shops around it. Inside were rows of canvases and intricate brushes and pencils.

"Hello," the woman at the counter acknowledged him.

"Hi," Kit smiled at the plump woman dressed in paint smeared overalls and yellow shirt.

"Is there anything you need?" The woman asked as she tied her cropped black hair up in a ponytail.

Kit nodded his head. "That carousel, is it still here?"

The woman's eyes lit up and she gestured for him I follow her across the shop to one of the many shelves. Sure enough, on that shelf sat the very bronze mechanical carousel Kit has been looking for. It was small, the size of Kits hand. It had four horses, one of wind, of fire, of earth and of water—or so it looked like that at least.

Kit picked it up and scanned the words written on the base. Saepe parva res magnum habent doctrinam converti. Kit smiled and turned to the woman who was giving him a questionable look. "Were you that boy who cane in with the little girl the other day?"

Kit nodded. That was why he was here. He had seen the way Sophie's eyes lit up when she saw the carousel and knew it would be the perfect gift. For a three year old, she was rather mature and had been able to translate some words of the Latin phrase on the bottom. Kit knew Jem was secretly giving her lessons in language but he didn't think they were going that successful, after all, she is three.

"Yes, that was my sister," Kit said as he followed the woman back to the cashier.

"I wouldn't have pegged the two of you related," the woman said. Technically they were related, Sophie would be his great great aunt but Kit figured the mundane woman didn't need to know that. "Is the carousel for her?"

"Yes," kit confirmed as he handed the bronze price to the woman to scan. "It's her birthday."

"So precious. How old?"

"Three today, Ma'am," Kit states and hands her a few bills as she gave him back the carousel.

"Aw, there so sweet when they're young." The woman smiled at him. "You keep an eye out for her. She'll be very beautiful when she's old though I pity her partner with you around—the big brother," she joked.

"Yes." Kit smiled at the woman and waved goodbye before leaving the shop. "Have a nice day."

Immediately after leaving the little shop and re-emerging into the busy market, Kit felt something was off. His hand unconsciously slipped to the Herondale dagger he had strapped to his back behind the pack he was wearing. Tessa never let him leave the house without it.

Kit swore he saw something flash behind one of the stalls but quickly dismissed it and kept walking towards the exist. It was getting dark and Kit could make out storm clouds ahead. Tessa would be very upset if Kit showed up late on a night like today. Last time she nearly phoned the mundane police after checking with every warlock contact she knew if they had seen him. Kit like to believe it wasn't his fault he had fallen asleep on a bench that night before coming home.

Kit tucked the bronze carousel in his back pack before making his way between the multiple stalls towards the exit.

That's when he heard the scream.

It was a loud cry that rung out through the market. Kit froze but as he looked around him he noticed none of the other people were affected. That meant... oh by the angel. Of course there would be demons today. Great.

Kit unsheathed the Herondale dagger Jace has given him as he ran in the direction of the scream. With his stele in one hand he quickly drew a rune on his arm to keep out of mundanes sight.

The young shadow hunter skidded around a corner as he followed the sound of terrified shrieks. He turned at a young fisherman's stand and found the source of the scream. Sprawled on the ground was a woman with a tigers tale for a warlocks mark. She was pressed against one of the stands, her blonde hair falling out from her ponytail and standing over her was—of course—a demon. It was clearly a shax demon with its long pinchersand insect-like body.

Kit cursed under his breath. Shax demons were usually sent to track down people and Kit really didn't feel like killing a bunch of demons to protect some random person tonight.

The Shax demon had failed to notice his presence so far as Kit pulled out his seraph blade. The familiar hum of angelic energy ran through the hilt of Kits weapon and he lunged forward at the demon. Kit cut at its legs and managed to slice one off. The demon roared in pain and turned on the young Herondale.

The warlock took that moment to run out of the market, sobbing into her hands. Great. Thanks for the help, Kit sarcastically thought.

In his slight distraction, the demon sprung forward at Kit who fell backward on to the concrete ground from the impact. The Shax's pinchers were centimetres away from his face as it's remaining legs held him in place on the ground.

At some point in the fight, the grey clouds above had started to leak the rain down onto them in massive pours. Kit could hear the distant crackle of lightning and wondered if this was his end. After everything he'd die from a stupid demon. Not even a cool greater demon. A freaking Shax demon.

Kits hand went towards his belt where his Herondale dagger should be but came up empty handed. He realized it had dropped a few feet away. In a desperate last attempt, Kit stretched him arm out to the dagger as the demon lowers itself on him. Kits fingers brushed the hilt of his blade. Just a little further...

A demonic shriek filled Kits ears as the Shax demon fell backward, a misericord blade—one of the few weapons able to pierce a Shax demons armer—sticking out of its chest. Kit gasped at the sight as he grabbed his dagger and got to his feet.

By the angel... where the heck did that come from?

He felt someone approach from behind him and out of instinct Kit swung them in front of himself before pressing his dagger to their throat. The persons—who Kit now identified to be a boy—breathing quickened as Kit held them tighter to his chest, dagger just barely drawing blood at their neck.

"Who are you?" Kit asked sharply, letting the dagger just barley nick the persons throat again. Rain drizzled down his face and soaked his cloths as the person went stiff in his arms.

The boy croaked one word. One word in such a familiar voice, one that always found Kit in his dreams and nightmares alike. One word was all it took for him to completely forget about the rest of the world.

"Kit?"
