When he found them, the ancient items spirits chose him to wield them, and the contracts that came with them

Each object has a ability, and connected to one of the celestial trio

Amaterasu was connected to the the Yata no Kagami 

Tsukuyomi the Yasakani no Magatama

Susanoo the Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi

The powers each regalia held, was connected to the domain of each spirit

Yata no Kagami, an amulet, gave him the power to summon and control fire, manipulate time and space, and heal others

Yasakani no Magatama, a gem that became implanted to Naruto's forehead, have him powers over illusions, darkness, ice, shadows, and souls

Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, a beautiful katana, gave him control over lightning, wind, storms, poison, and water
