The Overtaking
Philip had humorously struggled to build a tent for about ten minutes, until Arthur had relented and just built the tent for them. It was made from a combination of their cloaks, and some large tree branches. The final structure looked much like a normal triangle tent.
"I do not understand why you were so adamant about setting up quickly." Philip announced dressed now in only a simple cream tunic. The sky was still tinged with pink, but Arthur knew they needed to be sheltered before the sun set faded. The fairies of the dusk still lazily flew around them brightly coloring the mossy landscape just off the path, but Arthur knew what happened once the last traces of the sun disappeared.
"We need to be sheltered before the night imps come out." Arthur reminded Philip, and attempted to drag the prince into the small tent.
"I always thought the imps were good."
"Good is an.... interesting term. I wouldn't call any creature in this forest Good. The fairies are friendly. The imps? Not so much." Arthur stated. The bits of the sunset had finally faded from view. For a few moments nothing changed, and then, what the fairies called "The Overtaking" began. Deep red glows began to shoot out at ferocious speeds, diving into the vibrant dusk fairies and slamming them to the ground. A pink dusk fairy's glow to the left was taken first, and Arthur watched as the glow faded on the ground, until it was completely snuffed out and the victorious night imp rose from the bones. Bats with red glows riding their backs began to shoot down from the sky and swallow the dusk fairies whole. Arthur looked at Philip to see his face contorted with disgust in the light of the lantern.
"Go to sleep. It's better if you don't watch." Arthur said lazily, rolling over onto his back.
"They have vanquished them!" Philip stared, his face graven.
"Yes. Every night the dark imps massacre the lingering fairies of the dusk. Haven't you seen it before?" Arthur eyes remained closed. He had never cared for fairies, he saw them as insects that floated around your face until you waved them off.
"I think I have; but I've never known what it was. Tis called "The Overtaking?" Philip confirmed finally flipping onto his back as the last of the pink and purple lights were flashed out.
"mhmm." Arthur nodded in a tired agreement.
"If we had... been out there... what would have happened?" Philip questioned fear evident in his tone.
"Hard to say. We could have been transformed into pigs, or put into a sleeping curse, or even teleported to another realm. Nobody knows exactly what the dark imps do to travelers. We just know they're never heard from again." Arthur knew many a village hunter who had ventured out in the night to kill the nuisance wolf that terrorized the village, and all that could be found in the morning was a pile of their clothes on the ground; usually soiled. It was an embarrassing way to go as children were taught from infancy not to go into the woods at night. Philip's face showed he could imagine the other possible outcomes of going out of their small shelter.
"Shall I keep watch whilst you sleep, fair man?" Philip asked quietly.
"No. Imps and fairies are not very bright, that is unless you come across their queen. I doubt they'll even notice our tent."
"Then I shall see you in the morning. Adieu." Philip said turning onto his side. Sleep was best so they could finish their journey the next day, with as few stops as possible. Philip was first asleep, and light royal snores filled their little tent, but try as he might Arthur could not follow suit. He couldn't stop thinking about his father's escape, and whether seeking out the light fairies was a wild goose chase. Knowing his father... the dark imps were not off the table.
