Chapter Twenty-Four - Kidnapped
The moment their signatures were on the contract, the boys knew there was no turning back. However, none of them felt any regrets whatsoever as the contract was taken away probably to be stored in a safe at the back of the building under lock and key.
"I'm glad you boys could come into agreement with us," the manager says.
"Yes, thank you for letting us back in, sir," Liam says.
"Now, you boys have three shows scheduled at the O2 Arena here in London in a week. I already have trainers set up for you boys to arrive at your houses every afternoon until the concerts."
"T...trainers?" Niall asks.
"Of course," the manager says. "Voice trainers. Vocal coaches. You boys don't think I would let you get up on stage and sing without any singing for six years? No way. You boys would botch it, do you understand? Without us and all of the things we prepare for you, there would be no future for you."
"Yes, we understand," Zayn says quietly.
Niall glares at the table and you notice Louis tense up.
Never once does the manager appoligise for telling them they would never get back into Modest Management and speaking to them so harshly. You know he feels like they should just be grateful they're welcoming them back, instead of the other way around.
The following week is a busy one, with the boys trying to juggle their jobs and the vocal coaches coming over every single day to each of their houses. Liam and Niall are the only ones who fully welcome them into the house to train their voices again.
Sophia has been a great help with Davis lately. You wouldn't think an eight year old would be much trouble, but you are truly thankful for her help. It was much easier now than it was back in your crummy old house...without your mom.
The nightmare of reliving the time when Marcy arrived unexpectedly with a gun and ended up killing your mother came back almost every single night in such vivid detail it frightened you more than it has ever before. If that wasn't bad enough, you have frequent flashbacks during the day of the look on Marcy's face when you opened the front door and the image of Marcy standing in your living room with a gun pointed at you and your mother in the background, wondering what to do. Worst of all, you keep seeing your mother lying dead on the carpet.
Liam notices you jump every now and when you snap out of one of these flashbacks, but you aren't brave enough to tell him just yet. You don't want to bother the boys with the terrifying story because it would no doubt effect their hard work of getting the band back on top.
Niall's vocal coach is very pleased with the fact that he can play guitar well. It seems to help him in his singing, to get the perfect pitch almost instantly. In your opinion Niall's coach is probably having the easiest time with him, knowing what torture Louis' vocal coach must be going through.
Right now you are just trying to relax and block out all of the bad thoughts that are haunting your mind by lying on the couch with a tall glass of ice tea nearby. Liam and Niall are upstairs in separate rooms with their vocal coaches and you can just barely hear their singing and the faint sound of Niall's guitar. Sophia is probably in the huge flower garden in back, as she usually is in the mornings. Recently she has been there longer than usual, and you're almost positive it's because she's the one who's actually getting stressed by Davis since she has never had any experience with children.
Harry came by this morning since he has a day off, planning on talking to Niall and Liam to see how the vocal lessons are going so far. Liam told him to take Davis out for some ice cream or something because he thought you needed a rest, and maybe the stress from watching Davis was getting to you. Dispite saying Harry didn't need to do that and you were fine, Liam made him do it anyway. You have to admit it has been pretty nice without him for a little while, and you're sure Davis doesn't mind either after being cooped up in here for weeks now.
Finally...you're thinking about something else other than the tradgic event that happened so many years ago... Soon you feel yourself drifting off to sleep...
"Help!"
Your eyes shoot open and you are utterly surprised to see yourself sitting straight up already. You see Harry in the front doorway, all sweaty with his hair in random places. He is out of breath and looks exausted.
"Davis is gone!" he shouts.
"What?" you ask.
"Davis is gone!" he repeats.
"Harry, what do you mean?!" you nearly yell, hopping off the couch.
"I turned my back for one second, and..."
"Harry, what happened?!"
"We were at the ice cream stand and I was ordering, and...he asked if he could go look at a fountain in the middle of the street and I had said yes! I gave him a quarter to throw in it, but the next minute I turned around and he wasn't there! He wasn't anywhere! I must have looked for a half an hour, I couldn't find him!"
"WHAT?!" you scream at the top of your lungs. You feel yourself growing weak, as if you are going to fall at any moment.
"What's wrong?" Liam asks, bursting out of the room upstairs.
"Davis is gone!" you say.
"What?" Liam asks, rushing downstairs.
The next moment Niall was out of the room and running downstairs too. Harry quickly repeated the story to the boys.
"Oh no..." Niall says.
"Harry, how could you do this?!" Liam asks.
"I didn't mean to! I only told him he could look at the fountain and I'd be right over!" Harry screams back.
Liam reaches up and begins to pull his hair out. "No, no, no, no, NO!" he yells.
"I'll call the police," Niall offers, walking as fast as he can to the phone.
"Harry, call 911!" Liam orders. "I'll go out to see if anyone has found him!"
It only takes a second for Liam to grab a coat before he is out the door with it shut behind him. Harry pulls out his cell phone and dialls 911 just as quick.
"Hello, my son is missing," Harry says.
"Hey, a kid named Daithi is missing!" Niall yells as soon as the police station picks up. "Um, I'm Niall Horan. He was last seen um...downtown by a...the fountain there and...now he's gone!"
"What? What's my name?" Harry asks into the phone. "I'm Harry Styles. My son's name is Davis and I lost him downtown by an ice cream stand. I think he got kidnapped!"
Suddenly you realize how crazy all of this is sounding. Harry Styles has a son. Niall Horan has a son. One is named Daithi and the other is named Davis...both lost downtown at the same time. Both having celebrity fathers...whom of which is going to be making a huge comeback soon. Oh, how the media would love this once it all got out. The biggest question would probably be...who is the mother?
"Boys, wait!" you say.
They glance at you.
"You can't tell them!"
"What?" Harry asks.
"We need to tell them! We have to find him!" Niall shouts.
"No!" you say. "Hang up now!"
"But..."
"Do it!" you shout.
Before you know it, both boys tell the people on the other end nevermind and to forget about it before quickly hanging up.
"What? What's the matter?" Harry asks.
You explain yourself, and the boys quickly realize they probably don't want this kind of attention. Especially right in the middle of their big comeback. None of One Direction had a son long ago, and they shouldn't now. The best thing to do right now would just to lay low and look for him yourselves, without anyone knowing what's going on. Besides, perhaps Davis wasn't kidnapped at all. He could have just wandered off and Harry didn't look hard enough. Maybe Liam would come through that door in seconds with Davis by his side. Wait a minute...Liam.
"Boys, we've got to stop Liam!" you say.
"I'm on it," Niall says, rushing by you and out the front door.
At this moment, the boys' two vocal coaches come downstairs together, wondering what is going on. Then you realize they don't know the boys have a son, either. They don't know who you really are, either. To them, you are their personal assistant. No wonder they had confused looks on their faces when they arrived earlier when they saw you lying on the couch drinking ice tea instead of serving it.
"What's going on?" one asks, just as Liam and Harry run past them and follows Niall outside.
"Yeah, this isn't part of the contract," the other says sternly.
Obviously, you feel like telling them. "Look, there's just been a little issue. The boys will be back soon to continue their lesson," you assure. "They...just have to deal with something."
The two vocal coaches look at each other and shake their heads with crossed arms.
You are forced to wait in suspense late into the night as the boys look for Davis who knows where out in London. The boys alerted Louis and Zayn of the problem and they left their jobs straight away to help them look. So far they have been looking for hours. With no help from the police you know would be best to do.
Sophia has been very kind on comforting you, trying to assure you that Davis has probably only wandered off as you half expect. But the other half of your expectation holds the thought of Davis being kidnapped.
"Don't worry," Sophia says for the hundredth time. "The boys will find Davis soon."
Morning came faster than you thought it would. You realize that you are still in the living room, and you sit up after being asleep there for the few hours of night where you somehow managed to forget about Davis being kidnapped. You suspect Sophia put sleeping pills into your tea, but you don't blame her. If she hadn't, you probably would have ended up going insane.
The front door opens slowly. In walk five boys, all nearly dragging their hands on the ground. They look absolutely filthy with sweat and what you suppose is dirt. They all have scruff covering their face and neck, and their hair is pretty unruly. Harry is the last one in, and he lazily shuts the door. Suddenly Niall collapses onto the floor, startling you, but the boys don't seem to notice. The rest of them slowly make their way to the couches which they fall back onto except for Louis who makes the carpeting do.
"Boys..." you whisper. "What happened?"
"We...we were out all night," Liam gasps.
"We just...couldn't find him, love," Louis says.
Niall lets out a weak groan from his uncomfortable position on the floor near the door. Zayn looks as if he's going to pass out.
Harry breathes heavily. "He's just...gone..."
