Chapter 26: Rain Washes Evil Away 1-20-17
Legolas had climbed for about an hour and he was still nowhere near seeing any light from above. He was climbing really slowly due to Aragorn on his back and shoulders. But he told himself he wouldn't give up. Nobody else sure had. The whole Fellowship had come so far and all had risked their lives. Especially Aragorn.
He climbed and climbed. Sometimes he would turn off the Light of Earendil to see if he could find the natural light from above, but he had no luck. Another half hour went by and Legolas could feel movement on his shoulders. He assumed Aragorn was waking up from his unconsciousness.
Legolas stopped for a moment and found a small hole in the wall he was climbing. It could possibly fit Aragorn inside, so that what he did. Very gently and slowly, Legolas brought Aragorn down and sat him in the little hole in the wall. Then he waited.
Aragorn's eyes opened and closed slowly as his head lay on the rock wall he was leaning on. Once his eyes stopped opening and closing, Aragorn squinted and whispered,
"Legolas?"
Legolas smiled as he still clung to the rocky wall. His feet were in a good resting spot dug into some boulders. One arm was wrapped around a sturdy looking boulder and his other arm lay at his side as if balancing on the rock wall was easy.
"Did Boromir and Sam get out?" Aragorn asked quietly and brought his head up slowly.
"I'm guessing so," Legolas said, "I haven't seen any sign of them after I went looking for you,"
"I fell,"
Legolas nodded and met Aragorn's tired eyes. He was also tired, but was fine to continue effortlessly since Legolas was Elf kind.
"Alright, let's go," Aragorn said.
"I advise you rest a little more. Last time you pushed yourself it didn't have a good turnout," Legolas argued politely.
"Only for a moment though," Aragorn said and rested his weak head on the rock wall again. He closed his eyes and focused on what the next step was.
About a minute past and then Aragorn was climbing out of the hole in the wall Legolas had put him in. Legolas still thought Aragorn should have rested more, but he guessed Aragorn knew what he was doing. He had been put through much worse in the past.
The climbing process went by a lot quicker with both Aragorn and Legolas climbing at the same time. The only thing that was weighing them down was their minds, which they were blocking out pretty well. They told themselves they wouldn't think bad thoughts.
"Did you feel that?" Aragon asked suddenly and looked up.
"Do you hear that?" Legolas asked.
Aragorn listened and then he heard it. It sounded like rain. He had felt a raindrop on his nose. He smiled at the thought of rain. It made him feel free and he was now more eager to climb out of the hole that where stuck in.
The path up started narrowing inwards quite a bit. Aragorn persuaded Legolas into climbing up first with himself right behind him. Legolas reluctantly listened to him and climbed first with Aragorn close behind as he had said.
By the second, the two companions could feel the coldness of the fresh air above them and the rain was coming down more rapidly now. Legolas got most of the rain in his face, but he didn't mind. He liked the rain as Aragorn did and especially at that moment.
Soon water was flowing through the small tunnel Aragorn and Legolas were so close to getting out of. They were ready. Legolas tucked the Light of Earendil safely into his shirt pocket and then reached up his right hand to the sky. He pushed some rocks out of the way and climbed out slowly.
He was instantly flushed by the rain pounding down on him. Legolas looked around Mordor and could not even recognize it anymore. The rain had caused mist to come and lightning to blur out Mount Doom in the far off distance. The ground was cracked and Barad Dur was gone.
Aragorn climbed out of the hole and could never have been happier than to feel the rain on his face. He stumbled to his feet and looked up to the dark cloud filled sky above. He reached both arms into the sky and closed his eyes. The blood that once covered his face was already washed away from the rain pouring down.
The dirt and grime that covered both Man and Elf had also washed away. They both breathed in the fresh rainy air that they hadn't smelt for a long time. Legolas put a hand on Aragorn's shoulder and smiled. Aragorn put down his arms and looked to his friend.
"Don't you see?" he started, "Evil is gone, the rain has come. The rain is washing away all the once bad in this land!"
Aragorn laughed and couldn't have been happier in all his life. He dropped to his knees and looked down with his hands tucked in his lap. He didn't have the words for what he felt inside. Legolas stood next to him with a smile spread across his face.
Aragorn couldn't help but have the tear roll down his cheek at his success. At their success. The Fellowship's success. Although Legolas couldn't tell because of the rain covering his already wet face. Legolas was happy for his friend. He had overcome a lot on this adventure.
After Aragorn was done crying happy tears, he stood and looked up again. By that point, both Man and Elf where completely drenched in water, but they looked a lot cleaner now. Aragorn especially. There wasn't much change in Legolas. There never was.
As he looked up, Aragorn saw something brown and huge in the sky. He couldn't tell what because of the dark shadow spread across the valley.
"Eagles," Legolas said.
Aragorn and Legolas both looked to one another and smiled hopefully. Then they stood apart from each other and waited to be picked up. Legolas was picked up first gently by one of the enormous Eagles. Aragorn was taken soon after him.
They both soared though the sky as the Eagles held them in their talons. Aragorn finally felt free. There was nobody hunting him anymore or anybody that wanted to kill him.
Other than Denathor, but that would surely be put straight now.
He was actually free and in the sky hundreds of free off the ground.
Out in the distance not too far away, Legolas could see a mountain and on the mountain he saw people. Not just any people, but a wizard, a dwarf, two men, and four quite remarkable Hobbits. It was the Fellowship and he and Aragorn were going straight for them.
A/N: As you can see, it is coming to an end! I loved writing this chapter, it is so happy! :D
