Chapter 23: Crushed 1-14-17
"Why is the ground shaking!?" Sam shouted even more scared now.
"The ground is breaking loose outside!" Legolas explained although he did not want to, "We have to get out now!"
The conversation was interrupted at the sound of Aragorn screaming out in agony. Everyone swiveled their heads toward him. Sam's thought from earlier had come true. He thought he was going to be sick or faint from what he now saw.
"Oh my Gondor!" Boromir cried and his hands uncontrollably went to his face.
Indeed the bars that Aragorn was under had shifted and dropped down onto his body. The sharp cell bars impaled Aragorn's stomach area right under his rib cage. There were five broken bars already about an inch down into Aragorn's flesh.
Legolas looked from Aragorn and then up in alarm. He saw how dirt and rocks from above had shifted and brought down the broken bars even more. Legolas and Boromir both knelt down next to Aragorn's upper body in a panic.
"What in Middle Earth do..." Boromir was cut off as another voice sounded from behind him.
"We can help," the voice said creepily, "If you let us out,"
Sam whirled around to the familiar voice that he did not want to hear ever again.
"It can't be," Sam whispered as he saw the creature crawl out from the shadows of its cell. He was looking straight at... Gollum.
"That was the thing that was in the cell with me!?" Boromir shouted as he looked at Gollum who was still trapped in the cell he had been in less than an hour ago.
He had touched and almost tripped over Gollum the first day he was in the cell. Boromir felt disgusted by realizing Gollum was what he was trapped with.
"That's nasty!" Boromir continued with a harsh tone as he directed all of his hate and anger towards Gollum.
Legolas shot him a warning glance. He looked to Aragorn who was now sweating and whimpering in pain. Then he looked at Gollum smiling at him from inside of his cell. Than back at Aragorn. Legolas was torn on what the proper thing was to do.
As he looked at Aragorn this time he noticed something different. Legolas observed that since the cell bars were lodged into Aragorn's stomach it was causing him not to breathe properly. With every breath, his stomach would rise and cause the bars to sink down into his flesh even deeper. This is why he was holding his breath.
"No! Breath, we are going to get you out!" Legolas stammered trying to stay calm.
"We can help, if you let us out," Gollum repeated.
Sam was frozen in fear. Boromir looked to Legolas and they both nodded. Boromir got up from Aragorn's side and hustled to Gollum in the cell trapped. There was a large rock blocking Gollum's way out.
"If you do anything foolish you will regret it!" Boromir said as he pointed at Gollum through the bars.
"We wants out!" Gollum said.
"Ya, and we need your help!" Boromir argued getting more and more frustrated by the way the creature was talking.
Gollum stuck his tongue out and spat,
"Let us out, Precious!"
"Boromir!" Legolas called out to him angrily, "Hurry up and stop arguing with that thing!"
Gollum started laughing at Boromir. Boromir formed a fist and was about to swing, but he stopped himself and brought his hand down into normal position.
"I'm going, I'm going!" Boromir said flustered.
He squeezed through his old cell again quickly and then rolled the large rock that was blocking Gollum out of the way for him to be free. Gollum ran out and squeezed easily through the cell bars Boromir had just come through.
Boromir quickly following behind him making sure he could make no move to escape without helping them first. He did something he much rather not have ever dreamed of doing. Boromir extended his arm and grabbed Gollum's arm. Gollum squirmed, but Boromir did not let go.
"I helped you, now you help us," Boromir said through clenched teeth and dragged Gollum over to Aragorn.
"Did we say so, Precious?" Gollum questioned slyly while grinning wickedly.
Sam felt sick only looking and listening to the horrid creature before him.
Out of rage, Boromir flung Gollum onto the cell bars and shouted,
"Go under there and pull up on the bars!" Boromir pointed to the little gap left under the bars Aragorn was stuck under.
"Hurry!" Legolas said once more, "Aragorn is turning blue from holding his breath too long!"
Gollum looked down at Aragorn and saw his eyes roll back into his brain even though his eyes were still open. There was just whiteness now and the Elf was right, his face was turning blue. Gollum remembered Aragorn letting him free from the cell in Orthanc long ago.
Gollum crawled under the bars easily from him being so small. He made it to the inside of the cell and did what Boromir had commanded. He stood on his back legs and pulled upwards on the bars trapping Aragorn.
From the outside of the cell, Boromir and Legolas pulled upwards on the bars as well. With all three doing the same motion at the same time, made the bars impaling Aragorn lift from his body.
Aragorn's eyes flickered open showing his normal blue grey eyes again. He took his chance and immediately started crawling back again using his weak legs. He felt dizzy as he looked down to his blood red stained shirt. He let out a sigh, but it sounded more of a choking coughing sound instead.
Aragorn lay next to Sam coughing and gasping for breath as the blue color faded from his face. Sam was still in shock from the chaos, but put a reassuring hand on his chest.
Legolas and Boromir let go of the bars which also made Gollum loose his grasp on them. As they all dropped the cell bars, the broken ones slid all the way to the ground. Gollum was trapped again and outraged by this. He started shaking widely on the cell bars with both hands.
"You tricksed us!" Gollum screamed.
He continued pulling and pushing on the cell bars violently with all his might.
"We didn't know that was going to happen!" Boromir shouted back at Gollum.
"Let us out!" Gollum screeched.
"Be quiet! Let us think for a moment!" Boromir argued.
"You be quiet! Hurry up!" Gollum said and spat at Boromir's feet.
Boromir was so mad now, but Legolas held him back from doing something he shouldn't.
Legolas heard a crack and looked up. There was a boulder just above Gollum about to fall because of the violent shakes delivered by him.
"Don't! Stop!" Legolas tried warning Gollum, but it was too late.
The boulder fell loose and absolutely crushed Gollum. Then all was silent as the four companions all starred with their mouths hanging open.
"Let's get out of this cursed place," Boromir said.
Nobody could agree more.
A/N: Anyone expecting Gollum to be what was inside Boromir's cell? I kind of gave the clue when Frodo was remembering what happened to him a couple chapters ago. :)
