Chapter 11: New Companion 10-26-16
Back in Gondor everybody was awake and Gandalf and Denathor were having a tense conversation.
"We are leaving now," Gandalf said.
"To go after the Ranger? Pointless!" Denathor shouted.
"We are going after Frodo, I have already explained this," Gandalf said getting annoyed now.
"What about my son?" Denathor growled angrily, "That Ranger has turned him against me. And even worse, he is out there somewhere with that man!"
"Nobody turned Boromir against you! Boromir's choice was to join the Fellowship and he can't back down now," Gandalf said.
"You aren't leaving," Denathor spat, "I won't let you!"
"Goodbye, Steward," Gandalf said gruffly and turned away from Denathor.
Denathor grabbed Gandalf's cloak. Gandalf turned towards Denathor again quick and held his staff up as a threat. Denathor backed off and growled ferociously. Gandalf left the Steward behind and walked briskly to go and find the others. He finally made it to Legolas and Gimli's room and found them getting ready to leave.
"Let's go," Gandalf mumbled still very rattled from the previous situation.
Legolas and Gimli followed Gandalf. Gandalf flung open Merry and Pippin's bedroom door and to make matters worse, they were gone. Gandalf made a loud and unsatisfied sigh and grumbled,
"Where are they?"
He sighed again and walked down the hallway. The Elf and Dwarf followed behind him without a word. It was strange to them that Aragorn wasn't there. He would have known exactly what to say in this situation. The three walked and walked until they made it to the very bottom level of Minas Tirith.
"Go find us some horses," Gandalf instructed Legolas and Gimli, "Meet me at the gates,"
Legolas and Gimli turned on their heels to go to the stables. Gandalf kept going straight making his way to the gate. Just as he arrived he heard shouting and approaching footsteps ahead of him. It sounded like a chase of some sort.
Then out from the next corner ally came Merry and Pippin both running. Behind them were two Gondor soldiers yelling after them.
"Hobbits," Gandalf mumbled under his breath.
Merry's cast was off and his leg was very much healed. He could walk and run again, only with a small limp. Pippin spotted Gandalf and started running towards him. Merry followed also seeing the Wizard,
"What on Middle Earth is the meaning of this?" Gandalf asked rather grumpily as Merry and Pippin slowed to a stop in front of him.
Neither of the hobbits said a word and slid behind Gandalf and watched the approaching guards. The guards halted in front of Gandalf as well.
"What is going on?" Gandalf asked the guards who looked as upset as did he.
"They were stealing from the private kitchen, sir," one of the guards said and looked at the Hobbits.
"It was only a couple of carrots!" Merry said.
"And some cabbages and potatoes!" Pippin added in.
Merry gave him a look that said to be quiet. Gandalf now saw the food that was stuffed in their pockets.
"Please can we keep it?" asked Merry.
"We were offaly hungry," Pippin said, "Oh look! An apple, Merry!"
Before the guards could respond, Gandalf spoke up and said,
"We are leaving now, so you won't have to worry about them anymore,"
"The Steward will hear about this," the second guard scowled.
"Oh, I'm sure he will," Gandalf grunted. He had heard enough about that man this week.
Then the guards turned and walked away giving one last glare over their shoulders to the Hobbits. Gandalf turned and saw Legolas and Gimli coming back with some horses.
"Do you think he's mad?" whispered Pippin taking a crunch of one of the carrots they had stolen, "He looks mad,"
"Of course he's mad," Merry whispered back as they both followed Gandalf again.
Legolas and Gimli were on one horse and another man on another. Legolas jumped off his horse and so did the man on the other horse.
"Hello, I'm Faramir," the man introduced to Gandalf.
"I have spoken to him and he wishes to join us," Legolas explained.
Gandalf nodded slightly and said,
"Boromir's brother, son of Denathor,"
"Correct," Faramir said, "Can I please join you?"
"I suppose so. You know it will be dangerous,"
Faramir nodded.
"Take one of them," Gandalf said and gestured towards the Hobbits who were standing there eating their fruit and vegetables, "I will take the other,"
Faramir looked at the Hobbits and Merry stepped forward.
"I will ride with you," he said and took a bite of the apple in his hand.
"Alright. I cannot say that I have ever encountered a Hobbit before,"
Merry spread his arms out wide as he chewed and said,
"Well, you are now looking at one,"
Faramir laughed and lifted him up and onto his horse. Then he got on himself. Legolas climbed aboard the horse with Gimli on it as well. Faramir ordered the guards at the gate to kindly open them and they did as they listened to their captain.
Gandalf called to Shadowfax and she came soon after. He and Pippin got on and everybody left Minas Tirith.
"Onwards to Mordor!" Gandalf shouted and the three horses galloped away.
A/N: Faramir! I had to incorporate him into the story somehow.
