Chapter 14: Rhodey is on my Shit-List

I do not own Iron Man or Percy Jackson.

Takes place during Iron Man 1

Time: 0:52:53- 0:54:51

Tony's Age: 26 years old

Percy's Age: 40 mentally, wolf body 4 (thought to be 7 and a half years old--aging slowly)

Percy was walking beside Tony as they entered the air strip that Rhodey taught air force students at. As they entered, Rhodey was giving a normal speech to his students, "The future of air combat. Is it manned or unmanned? I'll tell you, in my experience, no unmanned aerial vehicle will ever trump a pilot's instinct, his insight, that ability to look into a situation beyond the obvious and discern its outcome, or a pilot's judgement."

"Colonel? Why not pilot without the plane?" Tony cut in as my tail wagged automatically as Rhodey turned to look at us.

Neither Tony or I have seen Rhodey since he picked Tony up from Afghanistan and the Conference thereafter. It was certainly nice to see the good Colonel again.

"Look who fell out of the sky. Mr. Tony Stark," Rhodey introduced as Tony and I came closer toward his students, where a few shook Tony's hand and gave me a bit of an odd look but seemed to be ignoring me.

"Hello, sir," one brave soul said before paying attention back to Tony as he started talking again, I seeming to hear the mischievous tone his voice took for a second before he started acting serious.

"Speaking of manned or unmanned, you gotta get him to tell you about the time he guessed wrong at spring break," Tony starting joking as I felt my amusement rise as I remembered when he started this rumor.

"Just remember that, spring break, 1987. That lovely lady you woke up with."

"Don't do that!" Rhodey said with a bit of exasperation at Tony's antics that he's had to deal with since their college days.

"What was his name?" Tony asked with a smirk as Rhodey's students laughed slightly at implying that Rhodey mistook a man for a woman and bedded them.

"Don't do that." Rhodey replied trying not to encourage Tony and his habit of telling the story to people that are suppose to look up to him as their superior.

"Was it Ivan?"

"Don't do that. They'll believe it. Don't do that." Rhodey tried once more as his students were laughing quietly at the banter between the best friends.

"Okay," Tony replied while trying to look like he got slightly told off by his mother, but if you looked into his eyes, you could see the smirk in them as Rhodey just had to reply with "Don't do that," once more to get message across.

I felt myself relax slightly, it was nice to know that even with the shit-hand he's being handed to by life, he was still able to joke with Rhodey right now.

"Pleasure meeting you," Tony spoke to the group of trainees as they were about to be dismissed.

"Give us a couple minutes, you guys," Rhodey said as they trainees starting walking another way to give to two friends a private conversation.

"I'm surprised," Rhodey told Tony once they were alone.

"Why?" Tony asked as I felt my head tilt slightly too as I wondered what Rhodey was surprised about. That Tony can act fine when he's not? He's done that before, especially after his parents death, and then Jarvis' and finally when Peggy's daughter finally, reluctantly, sent her to a home.

"I swear, I didn't expect to see you walking around so soon."

"I'm doing a little better than walking," Tony replied making me look at him for a second. Was he going to bring up what I think he was? That showed a lot more trust than I would've thought he had right now. Maybe he was only trusting those close to him? I hope Obadiah wasn't on that list. I have such a bad feeling from the dude.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Rhodey, I'm working on something big. I came to talk to you. I want you to be a part of it," Tony said with such honestly that I really hoped Rhodey wasn't about to put his foot in his mouth like he would sometimes do. Especially while Tony didn't know how to trust right now.

"You're about to make a whole lot of people around here real happy, 'cause that little stunt at the press conference, that was a doozy," Rhodey replied, feeling happy that Tony was making things for the military again.

I felt my mouth curl involuntary at Rhodey. He thought Tony was joking at the conference, that he would make mass destruction for the military still. That the thing at the conference was fake. Where was his loyalty toward his friend? Had the military drilled it out of him? Or did he think his kidnapping for building a missile that he created just never happened.

Sudden anger coursed through me, and barely knowing, my fur started to stand up slightly, my muscles tensed, and I was letting out barely heard growling toward Rhodey.

This was probably the first time that I really wanted to intentionally harm Rhodey, because before this day, he was Tony's friend. The military hadn't stuffed his head full of shit and he was always there for Tony no matter what screw-ups he made like drinking himself near oblivion in college, or how he practically forgot about me during that time in college.

At least, until now, where it seemed he only cared about what Tony built for the military. He was no better than Howard in that moment to me.

Tony seemed to either hear my growling or watched as my whole body tensed and my hackles raised at Rhodey's words, for he silently let his right hand drop onto my head.

"This is not for the military. I'm not...It's different," Tony tried to say, but I could feel how hurt he was by Rhodey's comment. It made me want to attack Rhodey even more, but I refrained, 'cause Tony was asking me to.

"What? You're a humanitarian now or something?" Rhodey practically mocked but you could see the confusion in his eyes and slightly in his tone of voice.

It made me relax slightly, because Rhodey wasn't really making fun of Tony, he was trying to understand the new Tony that the kidnapping bestowed to him. The old Tony use to follow his father's business without thinking, making weapons for the military without thinking of the consequences.

But he didn't understand the Tony that happened after he was held captive, tortured, probably starved and dehydrated as the people who kidnapped him wanted him to make a missile to hurt innocent lives. Days that went by that Tony had no idea if he would survive to the next day, especially as he started making a thing to escape.

In other words, Rhodey didn't know the Grown-Up, responsible Tony that was brought into the world by his kidnapping. And as a way to try and understand this new Tony, he thought the conference wasn't what it seemed, that Tony (as his past suggested) said things without thinking them through.

"I need you to listen to me," Tony tried to say as he didn't understand Rhodey's confusion, and as a result, was insulted and hurt by one of his best friends.

"No," Rhodey said as he stared Tony in the eye, almost like he was trying to bring Old-Tony back, "What you need it time to get your mind right."

I could feel Tony getting defensive. The smirk that was brought onto his face showed that he couldn't believe that Rhodey had just told that to him. One of the greatest minds in the world needed time to apparently get his mind right. Apparently Rhodey didn't realize that all great minds in the world ideas were never taken seriously, until much later when most had died.

"I'm serious," Rhodey portrayed but all I could feel from Tony was hurt and disbelief as I saw his face melt into the one for hiding his pain. The stone-faced person that I rarely saw, where he had to shut out his emotions from his face.

I rarely saw this face, because whenever he felt the need to hide his emotions, he would usually hide them behind sarcasm, never showing just how much they might even hurt him. But this face, this showed that he had too many conflicting emotions to even remotely hide them behind a mask.

Because there was no mask for him to show the betrayed feeling that is given from a close friend that you trust with your life.

"Okay," Tony said slightly dazed, as he couldn't believe his friend was saying these words to him. I couldn't help but feel resentful toward Rhodey, and was prepared to not forgive him for quite some time.

"It's nice seeing you, Tony," Rhodey briefly said before turning his back toward Tony and walking back toward where his trainees were.

"Thanks," Tony said, his voice void of emotion. Our way back home was filled with silence as Tony just gripped the steering wheel tightly.

As soon as we got back home, I watched as Tony instantly made his way toward his workshop, his mind filled with the conversation that recently occurred and ideas that were probably swarming his mind.

Looking toward the stairs, I made a quick decision and instead, made my way toward the kitchen and toward the freezer.

On the freezer handle stood a spare towel that was wrapped around the handle, gripping it with my teeth, I pulled the freezer out and propped myself on the side of the freezer.

Staring inside the cold unit, I looked around for the item I was trying to find and saw the Mint Chocolate Chip ice-cream resting along the side of the freezer.

Gripping the unopened ice-cream, I pulled it out and set it aside before pushing the freezer back into place. Once more carrying the ice-cream in my mouth, I made my way downstairs toward the closed door of the Workshop.

Standing on my hind legs, I rested a paw just below the pass-coded door and watched as JARVIS scanned my paw before the sound of unlocking was briefly heard and the door opened just enough for my nose to pull the door open for my body to squeeze through, before the door closed naturally behind me.

Tony was at his desk working on some sort of hologram suit, and as I walked toward him, his eyes softened from the hardness that had been portrayed once Rhodey betray his trust.

His shoulders seemed to untense and a breath seemed to be loosened from his chest. "Hey, boy," Tony replied softly as he knelt down to my height and took the ice-cream from my mouth.

"Always know when I need you don't you?" he asked softly as he started petting my head, his calloused hands practically giving me a soft message.

"Yeah, you're a good boy aren't you. Always by my side no matter what, huh?" Tony rhetorically asked as he rested his forehead against the top of my head.

While it should've been awkward for me, I just didn't feel it. I don't know if it was part of my brain that when I'm in my wolf form also gets a bit of canine information in it or not, but I couldn't help but feel gratitude and understanding at Tony's need for contact and seeming needing an answer of who to trust.

Because even if he didn't know that I was a human boy, I loved Tony like a son toward a father. Or in my case, watching Tony growing up, being there for his first steps, his first friend, and dealing with the shit hand life gave him. I felt responsible for Tony, he was my family and I will always trust my life in his hands. No matter how many times he may endanger it, I will go to great lengths for Tony, even at the cost of my own.
