Chapter 13: Tony Bargains with his Life Once More

I do not own Iron Man or Percy Jackson.

Takes place during Iron Man 1

Time: 0:49:00- 0:52:35

Tony's Age: 26 years old

Percy's Age: 40 mentally, wolf body 4 (thought to be 7 and a half years old--aging slowly)

When we got back I knew that I couldn't leave Tony alone, something felt off inside me that even the brief thought of just leaving Tony alone for a brief second, he'll collapse from some medical issue that wasn't checked.

Mostly because he smelt like he was still in pain, that the thing in his chest, while helping him, was also hurting him.

Because of this knowledge, I wasn't surprised to watch him go to the basement of the house (which was his workshop area) and start working on the schematics for a new and improved arc reactor that wasn't charged from a battery.

He had Jarvis put it in personal schematics so that it wasn't shared with Stark Industries, which also didn't surprise me, he never really liked handing stuff to other people.

Throughout the night and almost until just after the sun being up, he worked and created the new and improved arc reactor.

It wasn't until he was done that I demanded he sleep, he was obviously annoyed at me taking his hand (I grabbed it softly so I didn't break skin) and pulling him toward the doors that lead upstairs.

But in the end, as soon as he remotely stepped outside his workshop and the door behind him closed fully, Jarvis locked it and changed the password, quietly agreeing with me that Tony needed sleep before he did anything.

And while the man was still hesitant, both Jarvis and I knew he should be okay with a few hours of sleep that wasn't fueled from coffee.

I pushed him toward his bed where he ended up collapsing onto it with a sigh and a slight blissful expression from feeling the soft mattress underneath.

Ignoring how I wasn't supposed to be on the bed--and therefore ignoring Tony's muttered down--and instead curled beside him and laid my head on his chest just below his current arc reactor.

The man sighed and seemed too tired to argue, instead; he laid his hand on top of my head and, without realizing it, started to pet me head in small circles.

I didn't move until his breathing leveled out and the hand on my head stilled, letting me know that Tony was finally asleep.

Crawling slightly up the bed, I moved my head so it rested just against the space between his left shoulder and the arc reactor and finally let my eyes closed as the steady thumps under my ear let me know that Tony was okay.

Not truly alright, but okay, and will eventually get better. Especially with me by his side, just as the time in college, I wasn't going to let him alone.

I wasn't going to break my promise to Jarvis.

With those thoughts, I allowed myself into a light sleep, ready to wake in a moments notice if the thumping stopped under my ears.

It was after lunch but just before dinner that Tony woke back up, grabbed a coffee, and made his way back to his lab.

I was waiting around the chair of his desk as he laid upon this table, the new arc reactor right next to him on a small movable table.

As he sat the new arc reactor on the table, I felt a horrible feeling in my chest and knew something dangerous was about to happen.

It seemed that Tony had a similar feeling, or thought process, because he pointed toward the cage that was rarely used that was in the corner of the workshop.

The only reason it was there was because sometimes the ground was hard so I would rest on the dog pillow inside the cage, or Tony was experimenting with wielding tools or electricity.

Whining loudly and tucking my ears against my head in protest, Tony just sighed deeply like he really didn't want to do this.

"Go on, Kennel," he spoke softly as he knelt beside me and pat between my ears. Whining again, this time more softly, I followed his instructions and went inside the spacious cage.

Honestly, it was roughly almost the size of a kings size bed with it's own memory foam for padding. Calling it a dog cage was a bit much but it was my own.

My heart beated faster as Tony locked both of the sliding locks on the door of my cage and took his shirt off and laid beside the seat by the table with the arc reactor.

I barked once trying to get Tony's attention and trying to tell him that it was too dangerous, whatever he was thinking about, but I just received a sigh and a small shush in return.

Feeling slightly betrayed as Tony was risking his life without anyone nearby on standby, like paramedics, I laid down and let my head sink into my paws as I ignored the tail that was tucked between my legs and how my ears were still flat against my head.

Once Tony seemed comfortable enough in the situation he tried to get the arc reactor out, but swore under his breath instead/.

"Right, is Pepper home, Jarvis?" Tony asked as he carefully kept his old arc reactor inside his chest.

"That is correct sir," Jarvis replied dutifully, "would you like me to connect you with her tablet?"

"Yes, Jarvis." As soon as the sound showed that he was connected to Pepper's tablet, Tony instantly asked, "Pepper. Uh, how big are you hands?"

"What?" Pepper asked confused, I heard the sound of the TV on in the background and realized she was in the living room watching the news.

"How big are you hands," Tony dutifully repeated.

"I don't understand. Why-" Pepper replied confused still, not that I could blame her. I could barely tell what Tony wanted out of this conversation.

"Get down here, I need you," Was all Tony said before disconnecting the call.

I heard the sign of Pepper's heels coming down the steps before I saw her through the glass windows that lead to Tony's lab.

She entered the password in and I let out a loan whine from the corner. She instantly shot me a confused look, knowing from experience I've never been locked up before, even if I do get into something I'm not suppose to.

"Hey," Tony replied trying to sound casual. "Let me see them, show me your hands."

Tony seemed to be talking to himself as she approached an confusedly showed him her hands. "Oh, wow, they are small. Very petite, indeed. I just need your help for a sec." he said as he looked at the new arc reactor that was now in his hands.

Pepper looked at Tony's chest slightly wide-eyed and in awe. "Oh my god, is that the thing that's keeping you alive?"

"It was, it is now antique, Tony replied, "This is what will be keeping me alive for the foreseeable future. I'm swapping it up for an upgraded unit, and I just ran into a little speed bump."

"Does this have anything to do with why Percy's in a cage? And what speed bump? What does that mean?"

"It's nothing. It's just a little snag," Tony said trying to keep the tone casual as I heard his heart racing just a bit faster than the normal rate, showing how anxious he was." There's an exposed wire under this device. And it's contacting the socket wall and causing a little bit of a short. It's fine. Don't worry about Percy, I just needed to make sure he didn't do anything stupid."

I pouted at that and gave a little whine instead, which was ignored by Tony, as if he was expecting it, but received a worried look from Pepper in return.

As Tony spoke, he pulled out the arc reactor, scaring both Pepper and I. I instantly jumped to my feet and started pawing at the door, my panic at what it means for the arc reactor to be out of him causing me to get tunnel vision.

Most of my attention being on getting out of the stupid cage and getting to Tony the fastest I good, making me forget I could transform into a human and use my hands, or even use my water powers to manipulate the air and cause the cage to open that way.

"Wh-what do you want me to do?" Pepper stuttered as Tony handed her the device over my barking and the clanging of the kennel's door.

"Put that on the table over there," Tony replied surprisingly calm, but my ears heard the rapid beating of his heart, showing how nervous he was of the next bit. "That is irrelevant."

"Oh my God!" Pepper said with a slightly tone of disgust but mostly seemed to be in a small form of shock.

Tony's voice showed a level of calmness I was not expecting as he said, "I want you to reach in, and you're just gonna gently lift the wire out." Tony's breath was starting to stutter slightly as it became slightly harder the breath as the shrapnel was slowly shifting toward Tony's heart.

My mind and powers went into overdrive and almost unknowingly, my water powers seized the shrapnel and caused it to stop moving for now, giving Tony more time and more time for me to get out of the damn cage.

"Is it safe?" Pepper asked concerned.

"Yeah, it should be fine. It's like Operation. You just don't let it touch the socket wall or it goes 'beep.'"

"What's Oper--What do you mean, 'Operation'?"

"It's just a game, never mind," Tony dismissed, trying to ease Pepper's worries so she didn't make a mistake while pulling the wire out. "Just gently lift the wire. Okay? Great."

"Okay," Pepper replied uncertain as her hand went toward the hole but then her worries took over and she pulled back her hand and stuttered, "You-You know- I-I don't think that I'm qualified to do this."

"No, you're fine. You're the most capable, qualified, trustworthy person I've ever met. You're gonna do great," Tony said in a slightly serious, but calming tone to Pepper.

I finally gave up on getting out of the cage and instead focused on the shrapnel and making sure it didn't shift and cause Tony any hurt. His comment about trustworthiness of Pepper made me realize just why he didn't call any paramedics or doctor in to do this.

He didn't trust them with his life.

Not like Pepper.

Lovely, on his close deathbed Tony has to say something that almost causes the fight to leave me.

Almost. As my ADHD brain focused on the shrapnel, the other half was trying to get my muzzle just through the bars enough to grab the sliding locks with either my tongue or teeth.

"Is it too much of a problem to ask? 'Cause I'm..." Tony trailed off as Pepper finally felt enough confidence to follow through with the task she was thrusted on from Tony.

"Okay, okay."

"I really need your help here," Tony finished as he gave her a small fond look that she didn't seem to notice, as her gaze focused in on the hole in his chest once more.

"Okay," she said out-loud like she was trying to gain some sort of confidence as he hand breached the hole in Tony's chest. "Oh, there's pus!" she exclaimed in disgust as he face shifted from the worried to utterly disgusted and a 'I can't believe I'm doing this right now'.

"It's not pus. It's an inorganic plasmic discharge from the device not from my body," Tony's voice sounded slightly shaken as he tried to hid the discomfort and slightly pain he was feeling.

"It smells!" Pepper replied as I felt sorry for her for doing this. This was totally not in her job description.

"Yeah, it does." Tony said trying to hurry things along. "The copper wire. The copper wire, you got it?"

"Okay, I got it! I got it!" Pepper was looking off to the side in an attempt to not look at the hole where her hand was, probably trying to hold back being sick.

"Okay, you got it? Now, don't let it touch the si-" Tony slightly cut out a jolt of electricity ran through him as the copper wire touched the side of him. I whined and finally got a grip on one of the sliding locks and was able to pull it enough to get it unlocked.

One down. One more to go.

"-sides when you're coming out!" Tony finished as he held the pain in from the surprised shock he felt.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Pepper looked like she really wanted to be somewhere else as he eyes were slightly watery and she seemed to just want this to be over with.

"That's what I was trying to tell you before." Tony said trying to get calm once more as his heart was racing. "Okay, now make sure that when you pull it out, you don't..." Tony trailed off as Pepper unknowingly took out the magnet that was helping keep the shrapnel in its place from going toward his heart.

As soon as the magnet was displaced, the sharpnel instantly started to move closer to Tony's heart. The monitors beside Tony of his vitals going crazy making me whine and bark as I once again, clawed at the door. This time it was shifting under the weight as one of the locks was only keeping it in place.

"There's a magnet at the end of it! That was it. You just pulled it out."

"Oh, God!" Pepper replied horrified as the sounds around her seemed to be screaming at her for her mistake.

"Okay, I was not expecting--Don't put it back in! Don't put it back in!" Tony replied hastily seeing Pepper looking uncertain.

"Okay, what do I do? What's wrong?"

"Nothing, I'm just going into cardiac arrest 'cause you yanked it out like a trout..."

"What! you said it was safe!"

"We gotta hurry. Take this. Take this," Tony as he gave her the new arc reactor to hastily put it back in and stop the shrapnel.

I was just happy that my powers were keeping them from pressing into Tony's heart while I quickly worked on getting the other lock undone, knowing me pawing at the cage door was not going to help at this point.

I ignored the sounds of Pepper trying to comfort Tony, or was it herself? And instead, finally got the other lock in my mouth and pushed open the door, heading straight for Tony who seemed to have the new arc reactor in his chest while Pepper was staring at her hands in disgust.

"Oof," Tony said as I jumped onto the chair and landed near his legs, just missing an important piece of male anatomy.

I was sniffing around his chest while whining, trying to spot any more injuries or pain the Tony might be hiding.

I felt his hands going through my fur as he tried to console me but quickly payed attention back to Pepper and allowed me to just sniff him and spot any injuries that weren't there.

"You okay?" Tony asked knowing this might've traumatized her just a bit.

"Don't ever, ever, ever, ever ask me to do anything like that ever again," she replied back to his question looking disgusted and horrified. Her heart beating just as fast as Tony's was.

"I don't have anyone but you," Tony replied in a serious tone as he gazed at her. I could feel her heart spiking and could tell that she didn't know quite what to say to that.

Giving her an out to the conversation as both their heartbeats skyrocketed, I decided to ruin the moment by nipping at Tony's forearm in retaliation that he didn't have anyone else.

"Hey! What was the for?" he asked disgruntled as he rubbed the spot where I lightly nipped him.

I looked away from him and toward the wall as Pepper gave a shocked laugh, her heartbeat settling as she took one of the spare towels Tony had for this and cleaned her hands.

"I don't think he liked the fact that I was the only person you had," she snarked lightly, the mood instantly lighting up.

"Ah yes, because I'll just as a wolf to put in something as valuable as the arc reactor. Think of the hairs that would get in!" Tony mocked as I huffed at him. "Big baby," he mocked at me as I ignored him.

Pouting at him, I rubbed my head under his hand in a demand to be pet. "Ah yes, forgive me in return you get pet. I feel like this might be a slightly one-sided relationship," Tony muttered as Pepper laughed, her voice sounding carefree and relaxed.

As Pepper finished wiping her hands on the towel, one of her hands stroked my jaw and neck while Tony's was working by my ears, I felt my right leg automatically move as it reflexively started to kick out as Pepper scratched a sweet spot.

"What do you want me to do with this?" Pepper asked as she stopped scratching me and instead showed the old arc reactor.

"That? Destroy it. Incinerate it." Tony replied as he also stopped petting me and went for a shirt he had thrown off earlier

"You don't to keep it?" She asked looking almost thoughtfully at the device in her hands.

"Pepper, I've been called many things. 'Nostalgic' is not one of them," Tony replied ignoring the pointed look Pepper sends my way.

Instead, her eyes seem to light up with a plan and she went back into business mode. "Will that be all, Mr.Stark?"

"That will be all, Miss Potts," Tony said slightly dismissively as he moved toward his workstation, seeming to ignore how I seemed to be clinging to his side just a bit more than usual.

So call me paranoid, I was certainly not going to let Tony out of my sights anytime soon after the fiasco he just pulled.

Honestly, locking me in my kennel and then almost going into cardiac arrest. I can't let him out of my sights now can I?

"Hey, Butterfingers, come here. What's all this stuff doing on top of my desk? That's my phone, that's a picture of me and Percy. Right there. In the garbage. All that stuff," Tony says as he pointed toward the junk that rested on his workstation.

I watched as he turned back to the leaving Pepper, and felt like I was somehow in a drama show where the boy was pining over the girl, not knowing that she was also pining over him as well.

Why are adults so oblivious? First Steve and Peggy. Now Tony and Pepper? Why can't the adults just blurt out their feelings, or was that purely a childish attribute?

Author's Note for Future Information:

I will say this now, I WILL include something similar to Civil War, and probably some of Infinity War with a twist ending because so far only seen Part 1 of the Infinity movies. The thing is that I don't know if I'll include the accords or not or even the demigod stuff (maybe war) directly with it. Most of the ideas I have on future books are more snip-bits that are like "oo that might be interesting, will it work?" sort of thing. That being said, all Avengers stuff will BE IN ANOTHER STORY. I repeat, this book is purely Iron Man movies, the Avengers (and prob Iron Man 3 as it happens after Avengers I BELIEVE) and all that stuff will be in another story. As for who will get Percy when Steve gets back...Grins evilly...you'll just have to wait and see.
