Chapter 9: Rescue Missions
"Colonel Phillips." Steve started as he walked to the colonel with determination to find his missing friend.
"Well if it isn't the Star Spangled Man With A Plan, what is your plan today?" The Colonel asked a tad sarcastic.
"I need the casualty list from Azono (Sorry if mispelled)." Steve said slightly demanding
"You don't get to give me orders son." Colonel said as a lower ranking officer tried to order him, my shoulders stiffened feeling the threat but made myself calm down ignoring the feeling to tense and growl at the colonel.
"I just need one name, Sargent James Barnes from the 107th." Steve said worried for his friends safety, I rubbed the back of his leg trying to give comfort the best I could.
"You and I are gonna have a conversation later that you won't enjoy." The Colonel said pointing toward Peggy with a hard stare.
"Please tell me he's alive sir. B-A-R-"
"I know how to spell." Colonel interrupted Steve as he spelled Barnes name.
The colonel went silent for a bit as he stood up with an expression that made my heart and tail drop with sadness.
"I have signed more of these condolences letters today than I care to count, but the name does sound familiar. I'm sorry." Colonel Philip said and I knew he meant it.
Steve was downcast for a second before looking at the map, "What about the others? Are you planning a rescue mission?"
"Yeah it's called winning the war." The colonel said which made my hackles rise, the guy wasn't even going to try to save his fellow soldiers!
"If you know where they are then why not-" Once again the colonel interrupted Steve.
"They are thirty miles behind the lines, through some of the most heavily fortified territory in Europe. We'd lose more men than we'd save. But I don't expect you to understand that because you're a chorus girl."
I could feel the anger radiating off Steve but he kept his face blank as he looked at the jackass of a colonel. Maybe, once I reunite with mom I could have her turn him into a jackalope...mm sounds like a plan.
"I think I understand just fine." Steve told Colonel and I just knew he was about to do something reckless. Count me in!
"Well then understand it somewhere else," The colonel said as he started to move away from Steve and the map that contained the base where the prisoners were, "if I read the posters correctly, you got somewhere to be in thirty minutes."
I analyzed the the map along with Steve and heard him say, "Yes sir, I do." before feeling him moving away. After giving one last look at the map I followed Steve toward his Captain America outfit and shield.
"What do you plan to do? Walk to Azola?" Peggy asked as Steve started to pack a bag, I was sitting right beside him
"If that's what it takes." Steve said determined.
"You heard the colonel, your friend is most likely dead." Peggy said and I resisted the urge to growl at her for her bluntness and harsh words.
"We don't know that." Steve said and I flattened my ears trying to figure out if I wanted to give myself hope (for Steve) or not.
"Even so, he's devising a strategy. If he detects-" This time it was Steve's turn to cut Peggy off.
"By the time he done that, it could be too late." With everything packed I followed Steve toward the car
"Steve-" Peggy tried to argue as she followed us.
"You told me-" blah blah blah, just get in the car Steve so we can go see some action.
I watched as she stopped Steve from driving off before tilting my head a little confused when she said she could do more than that...maybe I should've payed attention to that conversation.
Oh well, I started to follow Steve as Peggy called Howard (Yay!) and suddenly we were on a plane and I was flat against the floor willing myself to belief I wasn't in the air.
This wasn't that fun. Nope, not at all. But I willed myself to follow Steve even if that meant...jumping out of a plan.
Of course, me trying not to panic made me not really hear the conversation but...meh it doesn't matter.
I was doing okay until gunfire started and I was strapped to Steve with determination after giving him a glare when he tried not to take me with him. We're a team buddy whether you like it or not!
Maybe I should've stayed up in the plane because the whole, falling from the air wasn't that fun as I tried my best not to squirm too much.
"Your fault." Steve said over the gunfire that was still aiming for the plane that had turned away.
I huffed and stilled while willing myself to not look down. As we landed in the deep, foggy forest. I crept through my natural habitat right beside Steve.
We arrived near the road that lead into the base and Steve pat his leg to a signal for me and started to run. Instantly knowing the motion as come on, I sped up and followed his lead as we jumped into the back of the truck (It was a bit difficult with my shortness but my legs were stronger with whatever spilled on me).
Of course there were two people there, but hey...Superbite was pretty cool and of course Steve threw them out of the truck too.
Sneaking into the base really wasn't that hard for some reason and before I knew it, we were in the base as I blended into the shadows, my fur color helping along with my size.
We had to take out a few guards but it wasn't hard and before I knew it, we were facing this blue material that seemed to glow and started our way toward the prisoner cells after taking an example, Steve putting it in a the bag that was strapped around my sides.
You would think it was more guarded but hey, not complaining.
"Who you suppose to be?" One of the prisoners asked as Steve started to get the keys off the guards that he knocked out.
"Uh," Steve said after a moment of catching his breath, "Captain America."
"Uh, beg your pardon." One other prisoner asked staring at me as I wagged my tail and watched Steve drop down and open up the cell doors.
"I'm looking for a Sergeant James Barnes." Steve asked as he released some of the soldiers as I started to sniff the air.
It was a bit difficult because all the mixing scents, fading smells were around and I brushed against Steve and started to jog toward the opposite way the others were going to go.
"Are you sure boy?" Steve asked and I huffed as we kept running toward where the scent of Bucky was.
Giving a flick of my tail to him in annoyance I pawed at another door and had Steve open it before sprinting down that hallway and taking a right.
My ears were flicking left and right as the explosions from outside kept stealing some of my attention but soon enough, we saw this guy come out of an area and runoff.
I had him turn into the room as Bucky's scent got stronger and Steve instantly went to Bucky's side.
Bucky was obviously drugged and I kept guard as Steve took in the surrounds and kept a hold on Bucky.
Steve handed Bucky a gun while he and I kept watching for any enemy soldier and I grabbed his pant legs and planted my feet as the sound of explosives went off below us.
"Thanks Percy." Steve said as we came in contact with a guy that seemed to also have some sort of strength.
I stood next to Bucky ignoring the conversation (but the guy peeling off his head skin was weird and just creepy) as I kept my senses open and ears trained on the creaking of the rails.
I pushed on Steve's leg as the creaking grew a bit more, we needed to move.
"Come on, let's go up." Steve said when he spotted an exit above us after the Red Head and his little assistant left.
There was a beam and instantly Steve allowed me to hesitantly take a step. Looking back to him I jogged a bit forward and kept my ears trained on the bars. I could hear Bucky behind me as he carefully walked across and planted my paws when the metal creaked and we ran until we reached the other side just as time.
Steve was still on the other side and I could tell what he was about to do as I pulled Bucky far enough away as Steve landed beside us, his clothes a bit stinged from the fire but he seemed relatively ok as I rubbed my head against his leg knowing he was okay.
"We need to leave." Steve said as we made our way to the exit and met up with the others.
