Chapter 4: Stuck and Gone 7-23-16
Aragorn and Gimli were trapped in a hole in the ground. It was originally a troll trap, but they wouldn't come close when all the orcs were around. Some orcs had pushed them into it and left them there to suffer and die, but Aragorn would not have it. He was too sly and smart to be trapped. The hole was about 7 or 8 feet deep so they couldn't just jump or climb out easily. Currently, Aragorn was digging at the wall with his hands trying to get out, as Gimli sat off to the side and complained.
"There's no hope Aragorn, just stop," Gimli said suddenly. They hadn't talked to one another since the Hobbit situation earlier by the boats.
"There is always hope. I will not just sit here and wait to die as the ring is sent to Mordor," Aragorn replied while still digging at the wall, "There is a way out of this. It will just take time,"
Gimli grunted in response.
"Legolas! Legolas! Boromir! Frodo?" Aragorn yelled as loudly as he could, "Frodo! Boromir! Legolas!" he called again.
There was only silence at the response and Aragorn kicked the wall in frustration. He continued digging at the wall. So far he had made a small hole in the dirt wall. He was trying to make hand and foot gaps in the wall so they could climb out, but it was hard to dig and it took a while because the dirt was hard.
"Frodo! Frodo! Fro..." Aragorn started.
Suddenly a figure appeared at the top of the hole. But it wasn't Frodo... or Legolas... it was Boromir.
Gimli stood up amazing and said,
"Bless you lad, you're alive. Help us out of here, quick,"
Boromir grinned as he looked down at his helpless companions. Aragorn could tell there was something wrong with him. He wasn't himself.
"So the fox has finally been trapped, is it?" Boromir said directing it to Aragorn and ignoring Gimli. Gimli's smiled faded and he got confused, "You won't be seeing Frodo for a long time... any of the Hobbits for that matter,"
Aragorn's eyes grew wide with panic,
"What have you done to them?"
"Are you accusing me?!" Boromir asked over reacting the tone of his voice. It was high pitched and made Aragorn even more upset, "I haven't done anything to them... but the orcs have,"
"Where are they?" Aragorn asked.
Boromir laughed and said,
"Gone by now. The orcs are on their way to Isengard with them,"
Aragorn fought the urge to look helpless and afraid, but he probably looked defended. He should have listened to Legolas earlier about the dangers, but he hadn't and now he was gone. Wait? Where was the elf?
"Legolas. Where is he?" asked Aragorn.
"How should I know?" Boromir shot back fast, "Probably dead by now somewhere out in the forest. Overwhelmed by attackers... dying... alone," Boromir said smiling.
The anger bubbled up inside Aragorn and Boromir's words stung both him and Gimli. Gimli started yelling suddenly saying,
"Never! Not Legolas! I'm going to kill you!" Gimli shouted and raised his axe as if he were going to throw it at Boromir.
Just before Gimli could throw it, Aragorn stopped him and whispered,
"No,"
"Ha! See right there! You're afraid Aragorn. You will never be king," Boromir spat, "Now if you will excuse me, I have some orcs to kill, Hobbits to trick, and the Ring to steal! It's going to Gondor, like it should have done long ago,"
"You will never get away with this!" Gimli called out.
"Oh, but I already have dwarf," Boromir said quietly and then turned on his heels and walked away from the top of the hole.
"Boromir, wait!" Aragorn called out, but there was only silence. Boromir was gone.
Aragon wished he hadn't tripped and fallen into the hole- how foolish he had been to do so. And where was the elf when he needed him. Legolas couldn't be dead. He wouldn't believe it. Not now in the middle of all of this. And then there was Frodo. The poor Ring bearer that would soon reach his doom. Either in the hands of Saromon or Boromir. Or even Sauron, if that were possible. Along with all the other Hobbits. No! Thought Aragorn. I can't let that happen. None of it!
Aragorn started digging at the wall again. Now he had made two small hand and foot gaps for climbing out. When he was done, it would be like a mini rock wall. Gimli sat down again and started mumbling to himself quietly. Aragorn tried to ignore him.
He put his foot in the bottom grip hold and his other foot in the other as he balanced his hands near the top of the hole. His hands still didn't reach the top. There was still a foots reach up and he would have to dig one more hole. All of a sudden from behind Aragorn he heard Gimli's voice say,
"We failed them. All of them,"
Aragorn jumped down from the wall and turned to face Gimli. He was taken aback by his sudden negativity.
"Not if we hold true to each other. We will not abandon the Hobbits in the hands of the enemy. Not while we have some strength left," Aragorn said.
Gimli smiled and responded quietly with,
"I'm sorry. Your right lad. We can't give up. Not now,"
"That's the spirit. Now come and help me, will you?" Aragorn said turned back to the tall dirt wall.
"Definitely," Gimli said and got up off the ground.
Aragorn climbed back up the dirt wall and said,
"Just station yourself to catch me if I fall. This last hole that I have to dig is going to be the hardest to keep balance on,"
Gimli stood behind Aragorn, and Aragorn started digging away at the hard dirt to make the last dent. They were both into position now and working as a team as they should be. Together.
A/N: What do you think of Boromir? yikes!!!
