Chapter 2: Departure 7-21-16

The next morning everybody was busy leaving Lothlorien. The Fellowship seemed to be in a better mood too. Frodo still remembered what had happened last night and what would happen to Middle Earth if the one ring wasn't destroyed, but he tried thinking about the positive outlook. He would destroy the ring with the help of the Fellowship and none of that bad stuff would have to happen. Middle Earth would be saved.

Haldir, Rumil, Orophin, and some other elves were helping pack three boats for the group's departure. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were helping pack too. Boromir on the other hand refused to help and was off grumbling to himself about the lack of sleep he had had. All the hobbits were already in their boats ready to leave. Frodo and Sam would ride with Aragorn and Merry and Pippin would ride with Boromir. Legolas and Gimli would have their own boat.

At the moment Merry and Pippin were eating a new food to them called Lembas bread. Otherwise known as 'Journey Bread'. Legolas had explained to them that lenn means 'journey' and mbass means 'bread' in Elvish. The bread was made to last a long time and one small bite would be enough to fill a grown man. All this wasn't that interesting to the young Hobbits, but they listened patiently anyway.

Early that morning, Galadriel had presented everybody with a gift, and Frodo and Sam were investigating theirs as everyone made their last preparations. She had also given the troop green, silver- veined leaf- brooches to fasten their cloaks. Frodo had been given the light of Earendil. It would be a light in dark places when all the other lights had gone out. He flipped it around in his hands examining it. Sam had been given elven rope made with hithlain.

"Look at this Mister Frodo! What can I do with this? This will do no good at all. No good at all," Sam mumbled to Frodo.

Frodo looked up to him and said,

"You never know. Maybe it will come in handy. Maybe there will be a high place we can't get to unless we use your gift,"

They both shrugged and tucked their gifts away as Aragorn got into the boat behind them. Boromir got into Merry and Pippin's boat and Legolas and Gimli got into the third boat. Everybody rowed away and either smiled or waved at Galadriel who was left on the shore of Lothlorien. As they got further and further down river, they lost sight of Galadriel and Lothlorien.

The Fellowship kept their eyes ahead of them as they rowed down the river. It went on for many miles until they decided to stop and take a break for the night. Aragorn, Legolas, and Boromir stopped their boats near shore and everybody hopped out to stretch their legs. They had all had a long day in the boats and deserved a short nap. They would continue after a short rest and stretch.

Gimli immediately collapsed near some large rocks and found sleep fast. Legolas did the same and Merry and Pippin leaned against some trees near Gimli and Legolas and fell asleep too.

Aragorn looked out into the water as he pulled the boats more into shore. Boromir helped him and saw what Aragorn had just seen in the water. Small hands clutching onto a log and a tiny tan head barely visible peaking out.

"Gollum. He has tracked us since Moria," Aragorn whispered to Boromir, "I had hoped we would lose him on the river. But he's too clever a waterman,"

Boromir looked back to Aragorn and said,

"And if he alerts the enemy to our whereabouts, it will make the crossing even more dangerous,"

Even though Aragorn and Boromir where speaking quietly, Frodo had been listening to their every word. Sam walked over to sit next to his friend when he saw his worried face.

"Have some food, Mister Frodo," Sam said holding out a package of green and tightly wrapped Lembas bread.

Frodo didn't look toward Sam but responded with,

"No Sam,"

"You haven't eaten all day. You're not sleeping either. Don't think I haven't noticed," Sam paused and put the bread away in his pocket, "Mister Frodo..."

Frodo still didn't meet Sam's face, but said,

"I'm all right,"

"But you're not!" Sam raised his voice a little, "I'm here to help you. I promised Gandalf I would..." he brought his voice back down to a whisper, "I made a promise, Mister Frodo,"

Frodo finally looked at Sam and said,

"You can't help me, Sam... Not this time... Get some sleep,"

Sam reluctantly obeyed and lay down by his side with a sigh. Frodo lay down too with his back to his friend. He didn't want him to see that he was awake and worried. He listened again to Aragorn and Boromir. This time they appeared to be arguing.

"Minas Tirith is the safer road. You know it. From there we can regroup... strike out for Mordor from a place of strength," Boromir said to Aragorn. Their faces where close and they were trying to be quiet, but weren't really succeeding.

"There is no strength in Gondor that can avail us," Aragorn said fighting to stay calm. The last thing he wanted to do was get in a fight with one of his companions. Boromir had already caused some problems in the past about the ring and Aragorn didn't want to continue the argument.

"You were quick enough to trust the elves. Have you so little faith in your people?"

Frodo blinked at Boromir's harsh words towards Aragorn. Frodo had never trusted Boromir like he did Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. Boromir continued; speaking through clenched teeth.

"Yes, there is weakness. There is frailty. But there is courage also, and honor to be found in men. But you will not see that," Aragorn turned away, but Boromir grabbed his arm and turned him around again and went on, "You are afraid! All your life you have hidden in the shadows! Scared of who you are, of what you are,"

Boromir released Aragorn and Aragorn turned away again, but suddenly turned back around to Boromir and said,

"I will not lead the Ring within a hundred leagues of your city,"

Then they both turned opposite ways and walked away puffing off steam.

A/N: Tense...If you are wondering/forgot, Rumil and Orophin are Haldir's brothers. I know this chapter was mainly from the movie, but it will be the last one like that! The rest of the chapters are going to be all new.
