Chapter 11: Old Friends 7-31-16
Sam pounded on the gate and yelled,
"That wasn't part of the deal! Please! Frodo!"
Saruman looked back at Sam and said,
"If you so much as step your foot inside of Isengard, you will be dead,"
Sam kept shouting and pounding on the gate. The orcs were dragging Frodo away back towards Orthanc and Frodo was calling Sam's name. Saruman turned to leave too but stopped as Sam said,
"You are nothing but a cowardly wizard who stands behind black dark walls hiding as other people do what you want!" Sam shouted, "All you will be doing is making Middle Earth fall apart if you deliver that Ring to Sauron! Sauron will kill you, and all of us!"
Sarumon turned around suddenly and pointed his staff at Sam. He said a couple quiet words and Sam went flying away from the gate. He went soaring through the air past Merry and Pippin. Sam landed far away, but was cushioned by his backpack and got up immediately. Running back to the gate he yelled,
"I made a promise! Please, I made a promise!"
But as soon as Sam got back to the gate, Saruman, the orcs, and Frodo were all gone. He watched as the main doors of Orthanc closed and everything suddenly went quiet. The only sound in the area was Sam's shouting. He kept saying the same thing over and over again until his voice was hoarse and squeaky. He dropped to his knees at the gate and bowed his head. The tears came and he whispered softly to himself,
"I made a promise. Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to, I don't mean to,"
Sam closed his eyes and rested his head on the gate. He was about to fall asleep by all this uproar, but Pippin brought him back to his senses,
"Who did you promise?" he asked innocently.
Sam looked back to Merry and Pippin and remembered Merry had gotten stabbed as he looked at his bloody leg. Pippin had been trying to stop the bleeding, but it was all over instead. Sam took off his backpack and dug around inside. As he did so he said,
"Gandalf. I promised Gandalf back in the Shire I wouldn't leave him,"
Sam handed Pippin a thin blanket. He didn't want another of his friends to go. Pippin took it and wrapped it around Merry's wounded leg.
"Thank you," Merry choked. It was the first time he had spoken since being stabbed other than the strange moaning sounds he had been making.
"Don't worry Merry; I'll look after you,"
Pippin spoke softly to Merry and smiled. It was silent after that for a while. Sam sat by the gate, Merry closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep, and Pippin watched Merry's breathing and tried tending to his leg the best he could. Eventually Merry cried himself to sleep out of stress and pain. The sun was fully out now, but at the moment it was covered by some clouds allowing the Hobbits to have shade.
"What now?" Pippin asked.
Sam turned around and looked at him, but didn't answer. Pippin accepted the silence and they all continued to sit there. Merry had fallen asleep which was a good thing for now because he probably couldn't feel the pain anymore. Pippin wiped his wet teared face off with his hand. He looked out into the distance and saw something coming their way.
"Sam?" Pippin whispered and shook his shoulder, "Something is coming,"
Sam turned around again and looked out into the distance at the approaching thing.
"I'm not moving," Sam murmured stubbornly.
Pippin knew they couldn't get Merry to his feet in time and escape so he decided they would stay too. Sam didn't even seem to care anymore and just sat his back to Merry and Pippin and at the door of the gate. As the thing in the distance got closer, Pippin realized it was a person. Soon it was obvious who it was as it got closer... It was Boromir.
Pippin held a giant smile upon his face and called his name quiet enough to not wake Merry. At the name, Sam suddenly felt scared. He turned around and saw indeed that it was Boromir. He knew Frodo disliked him and so did he. He never really trusted him fully ever since the outburst at the Rivendell meeting and how he always argued with Aragorn. Boromir was soon upon the Hobbits and he knelt down next to Merry.
"What happened?" he asked.
"He got stabbed by an orc," Pippin explained, "Where are the others?"
"I don't know... I'm sorry," Boromir answered.
Sam was still watching the whole scene take place and something about Boromir sounded off.
"Where's Frodo?" Boromir asked.
Sam payed more attention to his friends name and was about to speak, but Pippin spoke first and said,
"He was taken by Saruman after he saved Merry and I,"
After Boromir heard that, something in him exploded and all the craftiness and trickery in him left his body as he looked down at the innocently sad looking Hobbit. All the want and need for the Ring suddenly vanished and something in his mind told him to help and protect the Hobbits. He was brought back to the actual world as Pippin said,
"Can you help us?" he looked at Boromir like he was a hero. His wide green eyes pleading like a lost puppy wanting to be brought home. How could Boromir say no?
"Of course," he finally said.
Pippin helped Boromir lift Merry and soon he was cradling him in his arms like a baby.
"We have to get out of here now and come back with a plan," Boromir said.
Pippin stood up with Boromir, but Sam still didn't move from the gate.
"Come on, Sam," Pippin said.
"Where are we supposed to go?" he asked.
Both Hobbits looked to Boromir for an answer, but as they did they saw the same thing out in the distance. Two approaching horses with riders were coming their way fast. Boromir turned around and turned red and got suddenly nervous.
"It's Aragorn!" Sam said. He was beginning to feel more suspicious by the moment. How come Boromir wasn't with them? He thought.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were upon them soon and they all jumped off their horses and Aragorn shouted,
"Where's Frodo?"
Legolas pulled his bow out quick and put an arrow to the string and pulled back. He aimed it at Boromir and said,
"Put him down!"
To them, Merry probably looked dead in the hands of Boromir, but that wasn't the case. Pippin stood in front of Boromir and Merry and said,
"No, it doesn't look like it seems. Please don't shoot, he's helping us," he put up his hands trying to act taller than he actually was.
"Trust me lad, it does," Gimli said.
"What?" Pippin asked confused and put down his arms.
"Do you know what Boromir did?" Gimli asked, "He..."
"Gimli," Aragorn interrupted.
He gave him a look telling him to stop. Aragorn didn't want to worry Sam and Pippin about Boromir leaving them all to die and going after the Ring alone to take over the world. It would only make Boromir look bad and that would probably heartbreak the Hobbits. Especially Pippin. He seemed to have all his trust in Boromir at the moment.
Pippin looked up at Boromir's nervous face and then back at Aragorn. Sam narrowed his eyes at Boromir. Aragorn placed a hand on Legolas' shoulder and he slowly and unsurely stopped aiming his bow at Boromir.
"Where's Frodo?" Aragorn asked again more calmly.
"He's in there," Pippin said and pointed to Orthanc in Isengard, "Frodo and Sam saved Merry and I before we were about to die, but they took Frodo without any warning. Saruman had only made a deal on taking the Ring, but he took Frodo too. Merry got stabbed in the leg too and needs help. Can you help us?"
Everybody stared at Pippin not sure of what to say. Before anybody could decide, Boromir spoke up for the first time since the other three got there,
"We must get out of here at once,"
"I'm not going," Sam said stubbornly again.
"I agree with both of them. I think we should leave now and then come back when Merry is better and we have a plan," Pippin said.
"Agreed," Legolas and Gimli said at the same time.
"No," Aragorn said.
"Why not?" asked Pippin.
"Because we must get in there now and find Frodo and the key," Aragorn explained. Everybody looked at him with a confused look except Legolas.
"So you solved the riddle?" Legolas asked.
"Yes," Aragorn said turning to him, "And it's in there," he pointed at Orthanc.
A/N: Do you remember the keys from the first chapter? What where you thinking when you read that Boromir was coming? Oh no, Frodo!
