Chapter 1: The Ship
Merida's POV
Rocking. That's the first thing I noticed. I was being rocked back and forth, back and forth. I must be on a ship I thought. I tried to move but I realized I couldn't. Chains were locked on my ankles as were my wrists. How could've I let this happen. My mother always told me a young lady should never go off alone. My father said a lady should be equipped with self defense. Unfortunately both lessons failed me.
Who knows what could happen to me. I could be a prisnor, a slave, or.....worse.
My eyes finally adjusted to the darkness. Around me was hay. I looked up and saw at least eight other maidens. Oh no it's worse than I thought.
"Who are you?" asked a voice.
I turned to see a girl my age maybe a bit older. She was pretty with golden locks and kind brown eyes. "Merida, Princess Merida of DunBroch." I replied.
"If I were you I wouldn't mention that, even just your first name sounds royal, for now just pretend you don't know the language and stay silent." She said. "I'm Lenna."
"How long have you've been here?" I asked.
"I don't know about you but I was thrown in here the evening of yesterday and you were already here." she said. "You looked like you put up a good fight though, the big guy who took me had a black eye and you seem to be the only girl with a bruised knuckle." she smiled.
I chuckled, good I hoped it hurt.
We ended up being there for a couple more hours until a new girl was put in. We all got water. This continued for the next two days. New girl equaled fresh water. Lenna kept me company and we talked about our lives. I found out she was a farmer's daughter who loved to ride horses. I told her about my horse Angus and she talked about her horse Cabbi. I promised her once we get out of her we could go riding together.
The third day the hatch opened and instead of a new girl, it was one of the captors. He unchained our ankles but not our wrists. He dragged us up one by one. The light hurt our eyes. I felt the cool salt air press against my skin. I looked up at the man I punched he glared back at me. His dark hair tangled and knotted. His beard coarse and gross. He was a large man no bigger than my father though, but he had an evil look in his eye.
"You!" He pointed at me. "State your name!"
I remembered Lenna's advices and stayed silent. He hit my back with great force and I fell to the floor of the ship. "I said state your name!" He yelled. Still I didn't respond "We have other ways of making you talk." He said cynically , My mind went into panic but I wouldn't let it show on my face. Finally I heard Lenna's voice.
"Stop, she's from my village, she's a mute. Her names Keena." She yelled.
"For a dimwit she sure has a strong right hook." One of the other men said.
"Well Keena, you're exactly what My buyers want, a girl who doesn't talk but has a little feist. Who knows I might just keep you for myself." He whispered. I spat in his face.
"Ugh that disobedience is going to get you nowhere demon girl!" He yelled.
I took my chance, I kicked him as hard as I could in the gut. I positioned my chains around his neck.
"Let us free or we'll kill your leader." Lenna said. I nodded.
The men didn't know what to do. They finally just got out the keys and unlocked each girl and gave Lenna my key. She unlatched me but I still took grip of my chains.
"Girls get in the life boats!" She shouted and they did and all started to sail away. Lenna got into the boat behind me. I made my captor walk backwards until I was safely inside the boat my chains still near his neck.
Lenna chopped off the first rope with a hidden pocket knife she had. She was almost done cutting the last rope when my captor pulled forward making me lose grip on the chains. He grabbed them and swept Lenna up in them.
"You get back on this ship or she dies." He said.
I nodded and started getting out of the boat. "Hey." Lenna said. "Take care of Cabbi for me." She kicked the rope causing it took break and drop the life boat in the water with me in it.
I heard him yell then I heard Lenna scream. The next thing I saw was her broken body being thrown off the ship. I paddled to her and dragged her in the boat.
"I'll find you he shouted don't you ever forget the name of Alvin the Treacherous!" He yelled.
I paddled until I came to an island. I dragged my friend's body to the shore and buried her and said a few kind words. "Here lies Lenna the bravest, funniest, selfless girl I'll ever know. I cried and cried until I fell asleep.
