All of them reached safely to the Dolle's port. According to the booklet Dawn had, it was the common gathering place for many aspiring hunters. For the first time in her life, Dawn was out amongst so many humans. People chattered with each other, talking about how the hunters exam's gonna be. Dawn looked behind at her new friend, Gon, who was conversing with the captain. Now that she watched him closely, she could see that the boy had a rare aura. It was a warm green aura with no darkness. The green was extremely refreshing and had a dash of orange in it. Orange was the sign of cheerfulness and energy which undeniably suited him. There was both loyalty and passion in him and his kindness surpassed the others. Radiating most strongly was the colour white. It represented his pure, protective and innocent personality. It was a little bit like watching mother Nature.

Dawn had always been able to see other people's aura, at a very young age. She had learnt that there were varieties of Auras. For example, the captain had a ash brown coloured aura. That meant he was a man of wisdom and adventure. The shape of his aura was that of an hour glass, which meant he valued time the most. It also tells his personality as, a kind and warm person who can be strict and cold at the same time. This ability had been very useful to Dawn as it helped her determine her friends and enemies or the intention of people. But the strangest part was that, she was never able to see her own aura. She had tried to practice it infront of a mirror, squinting at her reflection for hours before her eyes start to ache and sting from not blinking. It had left millions of question in her mind, unanswered. She often wondered if it was related to her being a half dragon.

Dawn's eyes shifted from the captain to Leorio. Now this man's aura was extremely entertaining. It was a mixture of yellow, blue and pink. Yellow, the colour of the sun and the aura that is actually a part of the sun's aura, reflected his heated passion and determination for his dream. A dream that he would do anything to achieve. Yellow was also the colour of Friendship, wisdom, peace and happiness and this man had all four of them. But they were not properly matured yet. Next was Blue. Blue represented an unwavering sense of loyalty, which surprised Dawn a bit. His blue was stronger than any human she had seen before. Lastly, was the colour pink. Pink represented his kind and caring nature and not to forget his perverted nature as well. Dawn giggled a bit at that. Now she was sure that Leorio was a pervert. His aura was shaped into a hare, which meant he was impatient and hasty.

Dawn's eyes then landed on Kurapika. His aura was a mix of Red, Purple, Yellow and a tiny hint of blue. Red, the colour of fire and blood, represented his aggressiveness and his thirst for power and strength. His red was not like the red that stood for love. It was dangerous, which Dawn noted, and needed to be looked out for. The next was yellow. Like Leorio, his yellow also represented his passion and determination to achieve his goals in life. He had a desire for knowledge, to know the world and learn about it. A mind full of intellectual questions that are not yet answered. But, his yellow was divided into two. Ths other one was the opposite of this yellow. This other one was more on a evil side. The evil yellow indicated danger and betrayal. An image of her father suddenly popped into Dawn's mind. Scowling, she shook her head to get rid of it. She focused on the other two colors. The colour purple is often associated with royalty, nobility and mystery. This colour suited Kurapika a lot, due to his appearance. The last colour Blue, spoke of his calm and cool demeanor. There was a hint of friendship but loyalty was also there. Infact the evil yellow, red and the Blue were in a battle of dominance. Red was overpowering the other two, as a result of his thirst for revenge, but blue was not wavering. His aura was in the shape of a sword. A sword that will either protect or destroy. Nodding to herself Dawn made sure to keep an eye on him. He might be troublesome to deal with. But she would atleast try to make him travel the right path, as there was still hope in him.

Since auras often shift according to the consciousness or mental state of a person, Dawn made sure to keep observing them. Right now, everyone had a steady aura, luckily.

Kurapika who felt being stared at again, raised a brow questioningly at the young girl. Dawn's gaze was directed towards him but it felt like her eyes looked right at his soul. It was like she was in an entirely different world, a world where she sees and studies everything, that normal people can't. Kurapika suddenly felt vulnerable. He felt like a book that was forcefully being pried opened and read. He didn't like that feeling. At all. He walked into the young girl, who was seemed to have had snapped out of her trance and was nodding to herself. Dawn looked up to find the older boy standing infront of her with a slightly panicked and irritated look.

"Please stop whatever you were doing just now. It is not nice to look into other's...life or mind without permission." He kept his voice stern but polite, since he was talking to a child, a girl, who was 3 years younger than him. Dawn blinked quizzically before understanding what he meant. "Ah!!! Nononono I wasn't looking into your life or your mind, Kurapika san!" Dawn said as she flapped her hands shaking her head side to side. Kurapika raised a brow. "What you were doing is contrasting your answer, Dawn." He said as he narrowed his eyes. Dawn shrunk back a bit as she noticed the red aura sparking a bit.

"I was just reading the nature of your Aura." She said opting for an honest reply. Kurapika tilted his head questioningly while his red aura calmed down and went back to normal. "What do you mean by aura?" He asked a bit curiously. He had never heard of Aura reading. "Aura is the life force of a person and it reflects that person's personality a lot. It also takes shape according to a person's life. " Dawn explained. Kurapika's eyes sparkled a bit at this new found knowledge. "What did you find out about me?" He asked in mild curiousity. Dawn bit her lips as she debated on whether she should tell him or not. She decided to answer him with a half lie and half truth.

"You...are like a sword. The choices in your life depends on what you want to do with that sword..would you protect or would you destroy depends entirely on you. There is also desire for power and knowledge. " Dawn explained briefly. Kurapika dwelled a bit on that. "A sword..huh.." he hummed.
"But since Auras change a lot...it is not certain what will become of you." Dawn said as she shrugged. Kurapika nodded slowly, finding this ability useful.

"What are you guys talking about?" A voice interrupted. It belonged to Leorio. Dawn stuck her tongue out at him. "Something you cannot understand Leorio- san!" She grinned cheekily as she hopped away to join Gon who was thanking the captain. Leorio looked at Kurapika for answer, but he just ignored him. Explaining all that to Leorio was too much of a work for Kurapika. Leorio felt a tick mark on his head as his eyes twitched. He crossed his hands and huffed, looking away.

Dawn and Gon bowed at the captain who gave them a shortcut to the exam site.

TIMESKIP:-

The group were staring at a huge map that had the exam site's location. Strangely, it was in the opposite direction of the shortcut which the captain told them to follow.

"Strange...look! Zaban, where the exam is gonna held, is clearly indicated on this map. It is totally weird to go to this mountain, in the total opposite direction. We should take a bus that takes us directly there. It's a shortcut, but if we mess up then we'll walk for nothing." Leorio said as he raised his finger towards the place where the buses were at.

"Maybe he accidentally pointed this way?" Kurapika suggested. Dawn shook her head. "Using the bus is just too obvious. People often like to use the easy way, so a lot of the contestants are gonna take the bus. If I think about it... It would make an excellent trap, to eliminate a lot of contestants. "Dawn said, her hands crossed behind her head. Kurapika nodded, as he agreed. "Which way will you go, Gon? I will tag along." Dawn said as she looked at the cheerful boy. "The risks for going up there doesn't matter to me. I am going towards the mountain. I am sure there is a good reason for this." Gon said as he smiled. Dawn nodded at him. She had learnt to trust this boy's instincts and she also didn't want him to go there alone.

"You know Gon, you should learn to be more suspicious of what people tell you. I still advise you to take the bus.." Leorio said clearly worried about the small boy. Gon didn't reply he just bowed and waved before walking away, followed by Dawn. "You- you too?!! " Leorio stuttered after Dawn. His eyes then landed on Kurapika who was also walking towards the mountain. "Kurapika?! You-?!!!!"

"More than the captains words, I am more interested in what that boy and the girl do. I think I am gonna stay with them for a while." Kurapika said as a smile graced his lips. He soon disappeared into a distance leaving Leorio to grumble. "Tch! You are not as independent as you pretend to be! Well, I am gonna take the bus. That was a short time together.. Goodluck!!!" Leorio yelled at them before walking off towards the bus station.

Time ticked away and the bus was nowhere in sight. Leorio checked his watch and scowled. His ears twitched when two people behind him started talking. "Hey! Didn't you know ? It seems the bus for Zaban city doesn't go where expected!!!!" Randon person 1 spoke to his friend. "A trap??? Ruuki told me it was another trap to eliminate candidates." His friend whispered back. Leorio who was eavesdropping , went red in face. He didn't turn red from anger, but from embarrassment. He was embarrassed because a small child like Dawn was smart enough to have seen through this trap while he completely fell for it.

The crowd behind him soon reduced to 0. Having had enough he quickly got up and ran towards the mountain, hoping to catch up with his new friends.

TIMESKIP:-

The wind rustled and a lone empty bottle rolled towards Dawn, who kicked it. She glanced at Leorio with a noticeable smirk on her face. Leorio who saw that twitched in anger and looked away. "I don't like this place. There's nobody here." Leorio said as he cautiously looked around. "Its not empty." Dawn stated as a matter of fact. She could see the colorful auras of the people who were hiding. Gon nodded at Dawn. "Can't you hear the clothes scraping?" Gon asked tilting his head at Leorio. "And the people breathing. I can hear it loud and clear. " Kurapika said finding it obvious. Leorio's eyes twitched.

"Well sorry! But I don't have special hearing skills or instincts like you all!!!!" Leorio said pouting and crossing his hands. Just like a hare. Dawn giggled at him while Leorio kept glaring. Kurapika halted and raised his hand to hush the duo. Out of nowhere, an old woman appeared followed by atleast 20-30 masked people. "Very interesting....." the lady hummed as she observed the contestants. Her eyes widened a bit at the sight of Dawn, but she masked it well. Dawn who was poking Leorio's ribs didn't notice it. "THE EXCITING QUIZ OF TWO!!!!!!!" The old woman yelled loudly, nearly giving Dawn a heart attack.

Everyone sweatdropped, whereas, the masked people clapped. The old woman raised her staff to silence her people. "You are heading for the tree on the mountain, aren't you? First, you have to succeed in getting out of this town...The other path that would lead you there are labyrinths in which reign terrible bloodthirsty monsters." She explained. The monster part caught Dawn's attention. What kind of monsters were they talking about...Dawn could only think of Leviathan, Kraken, Chimeras, Klarigers, Parasytes etc. They were some of the monsters she had learnt about from a few books.

The old lady then raised her finger in the air. "So I will ask you one question. You only have five seconds to consider your answer. If you fail, your mistake would disqualify you from participation in this hunter's test this year." She explained. Dawn's face paled at that. She wasn't a bright student, sure she got A's and B's, but that was in her dimension. She barely knew anything about this dimension, plus her maths was horrendous. "You will answer with 1 or 2! Any other answer will be not valid." The old lady added. That relieved Dawn a bit. So there are no maths question..phew!

"Wait a second! You mean, only one question for three people?" Leorio asked shocked. "If..if he-" he asked pointing at Kurapika "-answers and is wrong, then I too would be eliminated?!" Dawn scoffed a bit. There was no way Kurapika would answer wrong. He had far too knowledge than Leorio. "Not very likely, the very idea of you disqualifying us is much more realistic. This makes me sick!" Kurapika retorted rolling his eyes. Leorio's eyes twitched again in annoyance and he held Kurapika in a choke hold. Kurapika tried to shove him off but was interrupted by Gon. "Yet, if one of us knows the answers, the other two will pass. I think it's pretty cool! Right, Dawn???" Gon said as he looked at his friend, tilting his head. Dawn nodded, agreeing. "That's true~ But lemme warn ya. I am no good at quizzes." Dawn said shrugging shamelessly.

Leorio gave her a "You are hopeless" look. Dawn simply rolled her eyes.

"Come on! Hurry up!!!!!" Out of the corner, a man with a huge nose stepped out. Dawn had noticed this man following them around when they left the harbor. She had been waiting to see what he was upto. She scowled at the sneering man, who seemed rather confident in himself. "Sorry kid. But I heard everything at the port. " he said as he leaned in front of Gon with the same sneering smug look. Dawn, whose protective instincts took over, let out a low growl, a warning for him to step back , away from her friend. The man who heard the growl stepped back a bit startled. The feral sound was filled with malice and anger. Only Gon and that man heard that growl. "W-well I will answer before you, since you guys are taking so much time." The man said clearing his throat putting up a brave facade. The old woman studied the man for a minute before looking at the youngsters.

"So? What do you decide???" She asked them. Leorio after thinking agreed to it. Dawn crossed her hand, her eyes still narrowed dangerously at the man. "Sorry~" the man said not meaning the 'sorry' at all. Infact, he had planned to place traps after he passed the quiz. "Alright. Here is the question. Your mother and your girlfriend are captives of a demon. You can save only one. 1.Your mother or 2. Your girlfriend?"

Dawn looked at the old woman in disbelief. Did she hear her correctly? What kind of question was that? Choosing between two important people of our life? There is no exact answer to that! Dawn gasped silently. No...exact answer... Her mind whirred as she joined the pieces of puzzle. Her eyes widened as she understood what the aim of the quiz was. The man was thinking carefully before he answered "I choose 1! My mother!" Dawn nearly slipped and face planted the floor at his answer. Seriously?!!! The old woman's expression didn't change. "Why?" She asked.

The man's smirk grew "A mother is unique and one in the whole universe. But girlfriends come and go. They are not unique!" He said. Leorio who heard that answer grew extremely angry. Dawn didn't blame him for that. There was so much arrogance in his tone, that it pissed her too. The old Proctor discussed something with her people, before turning back at the man nodding. "You may pass." The old lady said as she moved out of the way. The man walked off sniggering at the fuming duo. Leorio looked like his rage was nearing its limit. "Are you mocking us?!! What is up with that weird quiz!" This game, it is messed up!!!! Who can say the right or wrong answer with that kind of question?!!!!" Leorio yelled finally losing his cool. Gon looked at Leorio and tried to calm him. "I am leaving!!!! I will take another path!" He said as he turned to leave. "Too late! If you abandon this, you will be disqualified!" The old lady said. Leorio froze on his track. Dawn and Kurapika both called out to Leorio at the same time.

"Leorio!"
"Leorio-san!!!!"

"What?!! Don't tell me you are gonna accept the quiz?!!!" Leorio fumed. Dawn shook her head and was about to speak when the old Proctor stopped them. "I don't want to hear anything else!!! From now on, any useless words will be punished by disqualification! " the woman warned. Dawn bit back her lips hard knowing full well what the old lady was doing. "Well answer! 1. if you accept the quiz or 2. if you refuse it." She said calmly. Kurapika didn't waste any minute. "1!!!!"

He looked at Leorio and silently hoped that the nut head would understand the simple answer to the tricky question. He looked at Gon knowing that the boy too heard the screams of the cocky idiot that passed by them. His eyes then landed on Dawn who was standing silent. Her eyes seemed worried, but he could tell she knew the answer. Now the only person he was worried about was Leorio. That fool looked ready to snap.

"Here is the question! Your son and your daughter have been kidnapped, and you can save only one. Which one will you choose? 1. Your daughter or 2. Your son?" Dawn stared beseechingly at Leorio who walked away from the gang towards some broken pieces of wood. He picked up one of the long and thick wood and swung it, testing it. Gon was lost in his own thoughts and Kurapika was holding his breathe. Only Dawn who was watching Leorio, knew what he was about to do. She felt her face go red in anger. Right when the time was up and the old lady announced that it was over, Leorio pounced on her with the wood held high over his head.

The wooden stick never came down at the old woman. Instead, Leorio felt a crushing blow to his ribs and was sent flying back towards the pile of broken woods and boxes. His eyes buldged at the force of the kick and he found himself unable to breathe for a while. Dawn landed gracefully on her legs as she lifted her head, pinning Leorio with a bone-chilling glare. Leorio hissed in pain as he tried to sit, glaring at Dawn.

"W-what was that for?!!!" He yelped. Dawn tilted her head, her eyes still cold. She had always hated it, when people troubled the elderly(old) folks. True they weren't that nice to her, but it wasn't their fault. Their lives were filled with sadness and sorrow. "1. We have passed the quiz, so there is no use in attacking her. 2. Dumbass, how dare you attack an old lady who is just doing her job? " her eyes were like a knife that pierced through his skull. Leorio's hands trembled. He almost felt like he was staring at an unknown entity who would kill him any minute. "Dawn is right Leorio. We gave passed the quiz." Kurapika said warily eyeing the small girl. One moment she was this small and harmless kid talking to them, the other moment she suddenly turned into a ..well, scary person.

Dawn took in deep breathes as she tried to calm her senses. "Silence is the correct answer Leorio-san." She said now more calmly. "Then what about that man?! She let him pass!" Leorio said pointing an accusing finger at the old Proctor. "Didn't Ba-chan tell you that the other routes had blood thristy beasts? That foolish man forgot about her warning and went the wrong way. Ba-chan didn't tell him which way...she just said 'you may pass'. That arrogant teme is dead now. " Dawn said shaking her head. Leorio finally understood what Dawn was saying, felt terribly guilty. He staggered to his feet wincing a bit. He was sure that his rib area was bruised. Luckily he didn't break any bones, as Dawn held back on her strength.

The old Proctor smiled warmly as she nodded. "The little girl is right. He was a fool, that didn't think twice and now he faced the consequence for his action. You four have passed the test." She said as the people behind her moved away from a huge door. "This is the correct path " she said pointing at it. Leorio went into the lady and apologised sincerely. Dawn smiled softly as she watched. "Sorry for kicking you Leorio-san." She apologised once he returned back to the group. "Its ok. But! What the hell is your leg made up of?!!!" He asked rubbing his side. Dawn sweatdropped at that. "Flesh and blood." She said simply.

As Kurapika and Leorio went towards the door, Dawn looked behind and noticed that Gon was not following them. "Gon??? What are you doing???? C'mon! We gotta hurry!!!" She called. Gon snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her. "I was just thinking about the answer to that question." He said as he followed them. Kurapika chortled at that. "The test is over Gon. You don't have to think for the answer anymore."

Gon looked at him as he scrunched his face, thinking. "But...what will we do if we face that kind of situation in real life? Where...we can only save one of the children. Will we really remain silent and watch them die?" He asked, his eyes wide with curiousity. Leorio and Kurapika were taken aback by his question and were left speechless. "If that ever happens to me..I will find out a way to save both of them. If I can't, then I will die with them. But, I won't ever let such a situation arise..ever." Dawn said firmly, her hands balled in tiny fists. There was no hesitation in her eyes. Kurapika and Leorio looked at each other while Gon nodded. "I thought so!" Dawn smiled and walked off, motioning them to hurry up. All four of them disappeared into the depths of the tunnel like road.
