Sweets #3: Perfect
Dedicated to @EmilyCorn2
Thank you for being so patient with me, lovey. I hope you enjoy!
Humming to herself in the lab, Emily Brennan moved around her desk, carefully placing the glass slide under the microscope. Bending down to look into the lens, she smiled and jotted down a couple of notes for her to remember later on.
Most wouldn't be able to tell that Emily and Temperance were sisters. Mainly because of Emily's red hair, green eyes and tan skin, but also in her ability to express her emotions more willingly. Temperance sometimes stated that it would be Emily's greatest weakness but Emily would often just shrug and move on. She loved her sister very much but sometimes, she had to brush off her words and move on.
"Guess who?" Two arms wrapped around Emily's waist, causing her to get a fright as she looked away from the microscope. With a smile, Emily turned and wrapped her arms around her boyfriends neck and hugged him tightly.
"I missed you."
"Really? I couldn't tell." Doctor Lance Sweets, a psychologist for the FBI, commented, kissing his girlfriend on the cheek. Emily smiled and rolled her eyes.
"I'm going to find the person who decided it would be a good idea to introduce you to sarcasm and have them hung, drawn and quartered."
"You wouldn't do that. You'd get fired. Besides, you have the wrong mentality to be a murderer." Emily raised an 'I-dare-you-to-say-that-again' eyebrow. "Well, maybe you would but I don't think so." Lance kissed her, the kiss sending Emily's brain miles into the sky as she kissed him back. A knock on the door broke them apart, an annoyed look crossing Emily's face when she saw who it was.
Even though they had been dating for five months now, Daisy Wick, Lance's ex-girlfriend and Temperances sometimes intern, continued to be the bane of Emily's existence.
"Yes, Miss Wick?" Emily asked, an edge creeping into her voice. Sweets looked down at Emily, a small frown on his face as he watched her face harden, his brain suddenly trying to work up some conclusion to her change in attitude.
"I'm sorry to interrupt... whatever this is but Doctor Brennan requires your assistance." Emily sighed.
"I'll be right there," turning back to Sweets, she sighed. "Come see me before you leave?"
"Of course." Pressing her lips to his once more, Emily unwrapped herself from the comfort of Sweets arms and marched past Daisy, her red pony tail flying as she speedily walked past her, making it look like she had fire bursting from her head.
Before she got too far away, she heard Daisy giggle and call Sweets 'Lancelot.' Emily froze and turned around, getting a brief glimpse of Daisy flirting with Sweets. He, however, looked uncomfortable at Daisy's approach to flirting with him, which made Emily smirk.
"Hopeless. Absolutely hopeless." She murmured but deep down, she was freaking out. This had happened before. She hated the small glimmer of a thought that had slipped into her thoughts. The fear that she could lose the man who made her feel completely loved and wanted to a woman who... well who had loved him first. Emily thought back to when she asked him out. It had been a month since he and Daisy had broken up and he had been hanging around Emily for the entirety of that time.
"What do you want, Lance? I'm working."
"I know but it's boring at the office. Don't you need any- ohh brain. Can I touch it?" Emily smiled and shook her head at his quick change in thought path.
"One time. Only once." Sweets had smiled wider, making him look like a kid in a candy store. Reaching out with a finger to the brain that sat in the bowel by Emily's computer, he tentatively poked it.
"It's so squishy. It's amazing how something so squishy can contain our emotions, memories, thoughts... it's incredible. Psychology is all based on a lump of grey matter that fires neurotransmitters and makes-"
"Sweets."
"Everything function." Sweets finished what he was saying, a glimmer of excitement in his eye. Goodness, Emily thought. He was just too adorable.
"Don't let Tempe hear you say all that."
"But you aren't Doctor Brennan."
"Technically I am, just not my sister." Both of them laughed. Emily felt her heart flutter in her chest as he looked up at her.
"Hey, Sweets?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you want to get coffee? With me?" Sweets face once again broke out into a smile.
"As in a date?" Emily grinned.
Although it wasn't a competition, Emily couldn't help but feel that Daisy was fighting get Sweets attention. Again.
With a shake of her head, Emily walked off to find her sister.

The next day, Daisy and Emily were forced to work together. Daisy following the instructions given to her by Emily, and Emily working under threat by Temperance.
"Do I have to?"
"Emily, in this work, you're going to have to work with people you don't like." Emily raised an eyebrow, her green eyes taking on a sharp edge. "Fine. If you don't instructions Miss Wick for today, I'll report you to Cam. Who can fire you." Emily's face dropped to that of shock.
"Seriously? Tempe, you wouldn't."
"Then work."
As the baby sister, Emily had always found herself doing things she didn't want to do.
"Stupid sister." She muttered to herself.
"What was that?" Daisy asked, causing Emily to wince at the sharp trill of her voice.
"Nothing. Just... talking to myself."
"Oh, that's fine. I always do that. Lance used to think it was adorable." Scratching her head with her wrist, Emily noticed the jab Daisy had taken at Lance.
"What is your problem, Daisy? Why can't you just leave Sweets alone?" Daisy looked up sharply, a dangerous smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
"What ever do you mean?"
"You know he and I are dating. I see you flirting with him. Why can't you just leave him well alone?" Daisy put down her scalpel and cocked her head slightly.
"What, jealous? Scared he might leave you for... How do I put this nicely... someone who is actually nice to look at?" Emily frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"Oh come on. You're jealous. I mean, rightly so as well. Why wouldn't he want someone skinnier and prettier than you? What's to say he doesn't want me back. I'm exactly his type." Emily blinked, Daisy's words hitting her like a concrete block.
"He doesn't care-"
"You aren't even pretty, Emily. And you definitely aren't skinny. You aren't what he needs. He needs someone with the looks."
"Like you?"
"Exactly like me." Emily stared open mouthed at Daisy who smirked at her from the other side of the table, heart pounding.
"Excuse me, Miss Wick." Emily dashed out of the room, stopping momentarily to get Angela to get Cam to supervise Daisy. Angela tried to stop her from leaving but a she could see what arentrwttitudye blur of red, racing for the door.
All those times Daisy had interrupted any conversation between her and Sweets. All those times Sweets had come come to see her. Was it all a lie? Had those last five months been a lie?
****
Sweets stopped by the Jeffersonian to see Emily on his way home, a smile on his face and a desire to see her. Hodgins and Cam greeted him, stony faced and not in a welcoming mood.
"What have I done?"
"Have you spoken to Emily?"
"No.. that's why I'm here. I wanted to see her." Hodgins looked at Cam.
"She went home after your ditz of an ex insulted her and has been prancing around the place the whole day." Hodgins had his arms crossed and Cam shook her head.
"You need to talk to Emily. I've been trying to call her. Brennan has no idea what's going on because she's out on a survey with Booth but you need to sort this out before she gets back." Sweets opened his mouth to talk but was interrupted by Daisy squealing and running up to him.
"Lancealot! I'm at happy you're here." She wrapped him in a hug, shocking Sweets and annoying him slightly.
"Uhmmm, hi, Daisy. What did you do to my girlfriend?" Daisy shrugged, a smile still in her face.
"I told her the truth."
"What truth?" Cam and Hodgins were watching with mild interest mixed with annoyance and disgust.
"That she isn't your type." Sweets inhaled sharply.
"And what, you know my type? And let me guess, my type is you?" Daisy nodded. "For heavens sake, Daisy! Can't you just leave me alone!" Sweets heart raced.
Where would she go?
Home. She would go home. He needed to rectify what Daisy had screwed up.
"Where are you going?"
"To fix what you screwed up, Daisy. I love her and you went and messed that up. Possibly." Turning around, Sweets left the Jeffersonian.

Emily sniffed as she curled into a ball under the blanket she had brought into the lounge. It was warm, fluffy and smelt like Sweets. He always wrapped himself in it when they were having a movie marathon or were cuddling on the couch.
"Fat and ugly. Ugh this is so childish." Emily muttered, wiping the tears from under her eyes. It was childish. Daisy had attacked her right where it hurt most. Yes, she more curvy but it was what made her her. Sweets had never complained. He had always told her she was beautiful.
So why did it hurt so much?
All her life, Emily had been in and out of homes. She had lost friends and boyfriends and her brother, once her sister.
She hated it when people took those she loved most from her. It had happened all her life. So what was to stop it now?
She's right you know. Fat and ugly. You always have been.
New tears threatened to blot her vision. Daisy was right.
What was Lance thinking?
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Stifling a sob, Emily got up and wiped her eyes, taking a deep breath. Opening it, she came face to face with Sweets, a fine sheen of water covering him.
"Sorry, it's raining and I had to park like a half a block away and now I'm soaked."
"What are you doing here?" Emily asked, a look of resignation on her face. Sweets shook his hair, lightly splattering her with water.
"I came to see you at the lab. I was going to suggest dinner and a star wars marathon. But then I saw Daisy. Can I come in?" Emily hesitated, then nodded, moving to let him in.
"What did she say to you?"
"Only the truth. I was just blind enough to ignore it." A stray strand of hair fell in her face as she closed the door and moved back to the couch, settling down as Sweets sat beside her, looking at the side of her tear stained face.
"She's wrong."
"She's still in love with you. She flirts with you everyday."
"She's wrong for me."
"She's perfect for you. She's pretty and skinny and smart-" He cut Emily off with a hand on her knee, turning her leg so that she was facing him.
"Emily, she's wrong. You are the most gorgeous, talented, perfect, smartest woman I have had the fortune of meeting. I would not change a single thing." The sincerity in his voice forced Emily to look into his eyes. He looked to be on the verge of crying himself. Lifting a hand to wipe a tear from his eyes, she asked,
"Why are you crying?"
"Because I hate it when someone hurts the person I'm in love with." Emily's heart fluttered. "Yes, I did say that. Did I say that right? I-" She cut him off by launching herself into his lap and kissed him, hard. He responded instantly, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"She was wrong, whatever she said. You are perfect. And I love you for it." He grinned.
"I love you, Lance Sweets. You always have known what to say. Thank you."
Needless to say, Daisy never had the chance to break down Emily's walls again. Emily knew that Sweets loved her. That's all she needed.
