-Chapter 1-

Codebreakers, 14.03.1999, Black Forest:

A dark grey car drove into the yard. It was dark grey, at least that's what the girl sitting on a window sill in the castle thought, but she couldn't know for sure, because there were a lot of things to consider, perhaps if the sun shone on it differently it might turn out to be a black car, or even a light grey one.

In any case, a car drove into the yard. It was a sleek, slim sports car, and the girl was surprised, because there were actually only "all the retro cars" on this side, as Samira used to say. The cars weren't even that old, they just weren't driven that often on this site, which was a real shame because the girl liked driving. Her dad had been a racing driver, so she liked the fast cars the most. But loud engines, fast cars and other things had no place on this site and, as already mentioned, the girl thought that was a real, real shame.
Sometimes, but only sometimes, Samira took her with her. Then they would go into town and Samira would buy the girl an ice cream. Unfortunately, Samira was rarely seen lately, her mum had fallen ill and now Samira spent most of her time in New York. That was strange, because the boarding school was in Germany, the Black Forest to be precise, and to be precise it was deep in the forest, so nobody could find it.

The girl didn't like that at all either, she would rather have ended up with the field agents in Miami. The girl simply liked the "stench" of exhaust fumes, the smell of engine oil and the shiny paintwork in the sunshine better. And she would love to learn how to fight. Here they only taught you how to fence, and let's be honest, who wants to fence? Except for Esther, of course, who liked fencing. But the girl didn't like fencing at all, she would rather learn Akido or Judo or how to shoot. She just thought that was better than all that old horsing around with the foil and all that en garde or whatever it's called.

Now a man got out of the car, whom the girl no doubt recognised as headmaster Axel Monchelli. Axel was a good man, just a little too strict for her taste. She really didn't know how Samira could have married a guy like that, because the girl certainly wouldn't have done it, no way, but to each his own. Maybe he wasn't that strict in private. But then the girl thought it was really unfair that Mr Monchelli treated the students so harshly. It was probably his method. But then the girl didn't like his method.

She really wondered why the headmaster owned such a fancy car when he was always going on about how cars like that weren't good and only made dirt and noise and blah, blah, blah. Presumably you had to drive a car like that as a boss. That was probably the "car dress code" or something like that, the girl thought to herself. Or maybe not. What did she know?

Field Agents,14/03/1999,Miami:

"Richard, are you coming, let's have a game of football?" Gelatos shouted into his best friend's room. The room was tidy and messy in equal measure. Tidy, but due to Richard's love of rock music, which drove him to hang posters and pictures of rock bands and the like all over the room, the dark furnishings and the black and blood-red painted walls, the room had a certain disorder, at least Gelatos thought so.
"Yeah sure man, always!" Richard was sitting at his desk, fiddling with some strange device.

"What's that again?" Gelatos asked.

"It's an old radio from my dad, I want to mend it." Replied Richard. He often did that sort of thing, repairing things.

That's very sweet man, but now leave the old thing and come on, the others are already waiting!" Gelatos replied. Gelatos was from France, Paris to be precise, but he had no accent at all. It was funny to see how one developed when he got terribly upset about something. Of course Richard and the others would never tell him that, Gelatos was so proud that he had finally got rid of him after three years.

Gelatos grabbed Richard by the arm and pulled him after him onto the football pitch. Then the game began. After only half an hour it was already 5-4 in Gelatos' team's favour, and Richards was trailing by one point. However, they caught up and in the end the score was 14:12 in Richard's team's favour. Richard noticed a girl at the edge of the court. Slim, thin and seemingly fragile, as if a gust of wind could blow her away at any moment, she stood there. He had to concentrate on the game for a few minutes, and when he looked again, the girl was gone.
