Bones & All

&&

Rivers flowed alongside a graveyard of livid hunger. The blonde would blush to the roots of her hair, dreaming of a man's lips brushing against the scars scattered along her shoulder blades. Infatuation at its finest, and maybe it was to make up for the time she spent in the arena, lacking a pure, clumsy affection. And she kissed the beginning of this cannibalism, this rage that is desire.

"As a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest amongst them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors."

District 4 was angry. Upset with the world, upset with the Capitol for making their beloved victors partake in such a brutal, unforgiving game, time and time again. Even Katniss Everdeen, her constant remarks about burning the Capitol to the ground, could never have been prepared for the 75th Reaping Day.

September Monet, the 72st Hunger Games victor, could sense nothing but feminine numbness encapsulating her being. She could remember the feeling of standing in the arena, not even three years prior. She had heard stories of victors going insane after being in the games, mind permanently foggy, falling into a rhythm of self-destruction. Year 71 was Annie Cresta, years before that, Ron Stafford. Her own sister, Lorelei Monet, had been reaped during the Golden Years, winning the 61st Hunger Games merely through her extensive fishing capabilities. And the most memorable, Finnick Odair, victor at only fourteen years old, youngest in the history of the Hunger Games. His game brought much fame to District 4, whether that was a good or bad thing can be left up to self-interpretation.

And maybe for Finnick Odair it was easier. Practically born into submission, lips a bloody, scarlett madness. A gentle, strangled agony of a man, childhood ruined by countless torments. He watched the news, silent and in deep, intertwined thought. Hearing your name on television, a woman revealing that you would be in the arena once again after coming inches from death, should have caused denial, anger. But maybe Finnick Odair had passed all stages of grief, spilling into the phase of accepting his twisted, rotting fate.

God, how September ricochet between certainties and doubts. They're kidding right? Rage was her element, her other shyness. She would hauntingly walk to her execution, livid with disdain, the voices of a thousand protests echoing throughout her hungry mind.

September Monet, bones and all, was infatuated.
