Heartbeat
"How do you hurt someone that easily?"
"By saying something that you know is bound to hurt. "
Namjoon and his soulmate stared at each other for a few seconds, wordlessly. Mishil's eyes widened slightly and Namjoon expected a shriek out of her as she obviously was an ARMY.
But instead, they stared at him for a whole second before they returned to what they were before. Tired but still shinning with a certain glow.
The soulmates were staring at each other, waiting for the next person to start speaking.
"Umm....hi!" She squeaked out, realizing that the 'spokesperson' of the biggest boy band on earth was at a loss of what to say in front of his soulmate. "Hey. You feel...Uhm...okay?" Namjoon said, completely blank on what to say or do. "I'm a bit tired but it's alright. What about...you?" His soulmate asked, equally confused and nervous. "I feel much better, thank you," Namjoon answered, awkwardness oozing out of his aura.
'Seriously! Who are you talking to? Your headmistress?' Namjoon's inner voice snapped. 'Shut up!' Namjoon snapped back, internally.
"That's...um...good to hear," Mishil answered, playing with her fingers. 'You talked to your math teacher better than that.' This time, it was Mishil's inner voice, that was nagging. 'Mind your own business!' She internally rolled her eyes.
Then it was an awkward silence. "These two are awkward." The loneliest ghost at the corner of the room sighed. Before the soulmates ended up suffocating from the awkwardness of the situation, Jin and Soo-Ah walked in, literally saving the day.
"You're finally up," Soo-Ah exclaimed, meeting her best friend's worn-out eyes. "Seems like it." Mishil smiled, softly, looking at her best friend's relieved face.
"Mishil, just for future events, I will murder you if you scare the shit out of me like that ever again!". Soo-Ah glared making Mishil let out a quiet giggle.
"I didn't mean to. You know that, don't you? I called you as fast as I could. And honestly! I was dealing with the feeling of having my insides being tossed around like a chef's salad, so I wasn't thinking straight. Yeah! Sorry about that." She smirked.
"I can't with you," Soo-Ah scoffed as she sat beside Mishil. "I scared you, didn't I? All of you?" Mishil gave Jin a soft smile which didn't go unnoticed by Namjoon.
"Well yeah! Even the doctor low-key freaked out at your state." Soo-Ah sighed, shaking her head. "They said if we were even 30 more minutes late, you could've slipped into the danger zone," Jin explained, the sight of a chalky pale girl from last night, danced across his vision; almost making him shudder.
"Thanks for saving me." Mishil thanked, looking at Soo-Ah. "Don't thank me. Thank Jin-ssi. He was the one who figured that you're Namjoon-ssi's soulmate." Soo-Ah nodded at Jin, making his turn red!
"That's the second time you've saved my life. I can't thank you enough." Mishil gave him a bright smile. "You don't have to. It was my duty towards you as an ARMY and then as my brother's soulmate. I hope you get well soon." Jin gave her his signature sight-blinding smile.
Namjoon watched the exchange between Hyung and his soulmate. They seemed to talk without any barriers or awkwardness, as though Jin and she had known each other for a long time. The way she smiled at Jin and how Jin returned that smile, he couldn't help but feel but a flash of an uncomfortable feeling swirl around his insides. He suddenly wished that Jin would leave them alone.
Wait! Was he...jealous? But why would he be? He never wanted this. A soulmate to Namjoon was nothing but an extra responsibility. In all honesty, Namjoon never really believed in soulmates completely until Jin, Jimin, Hoseok, and Jungkook found theirs.
He used to silently shake his head at the members and their descriptions of how they and their soulmates went from complete and awkward strangers to 'real soulmates'. Namjoon never really expected to ever find his soulmate. The main reason is his ignorance and disbelief towards the idea of having one. Now that he had one, he didn't know what to do or even how to react. He was in short, at a loss.
"Thanks anyway Jin-ssi." Mishil smiled before turning to Soo-Ah. "Do my parents know about this?"Soo-Ah's face visibly paled at this question. "Mishil, you've just woken up. Don't worry about stuff like these. Get some rest first!" Soo-Ah stammered, not wanting to talk about it.
"Soo-Ah, what?" Mishil asked, looking straight into her best friend's eyes. "They don't want their daughter to be indulging with a pop star. They said it's either him or...." Soo-Ah's voice trailed off.
"My life or their rules, ain't it?" Mishil asked, her voice grave and Namjoon could feel an awful pain in his ribs. Some type of pain that didn't hurt physically but it was breaking him, somehow. "Hmm. Either you leave right now and they'll do something to keep you alive or they'll forget you ever existed." Soo-Ah explained, making Jin and Namjoon's eyes go wide.
"My phone," Mishil said, trying to sit up straight. Namjoon grabbed her shoulders and helped her sit. She looked at Namjoon with a soft smile dancing on her lips and that made Namjoon's heart somersault.
"What?! Mishil, not now! You can talk to them later." Soo-Ah pleaded. "Soo-Ah, my phone," Mishil repeated her tone 10 degrees minus the ice. She held out her hand and Soo-Ah had no choice but to hand the girl her phone.
What Mishil did, was unimaginable to all 3 others. She took out the memory card and then; chucked the phone out of the window beside her.
Just. Like. That.
"You...you...Why would you do that?!" Soo-Ah asked, in a devastated tone. "This way, I won't be tempted to call them. It'll be easier for them to forget my existence." She said, with zero emotions in her voice.
"Mishil..." Soo-Ah trailed off, at a loss for what to say. "You of all people, Soo-Ah should know what made me take this decision this easily. You know why I'm here." Mishil said, her gaze fixated on her lap.
Neither Namjoon nor Jin were brave enough to say anything about this. She seemed extremely upset and sad.
"They'll regret it. They'll regret it one day. Don't strain yourself. Get some rest." Soo-Ah said, patting her head. Even as Namjoon saw Mishil's tightly shut eyes, leaking hot salty tears, he couldn't help but feel angry at her.
For letting go of her everything, just like that. One's most prized possession was their family. How could she just throw her family away just like that?
||That evening||
Namjoon woke up from his nap, to find the space beside him empty. He began panicking! The doctor visited them just two hours before and he was glad to see Mishil awake. However, he made it very clear that she was gonna have to stay on bed rest for at least two more days to fully regain her strength.
Namjoon's limbs were aching from the need for healing. He stumbled off the bed only to find his soulmate sitting on the balcony, staring at who knows what. He limped his way to the balcony, almost falling off but catching himself by the wall, making Mishil turn towards him.
"Oh! Namjoon-ssi! Are you okay?" Mishil walked to him, stumbling on her feet. The second her fingers came in contact with Namjoon's arm, he couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. "Oh my God! I'm sorry! I didn't know...." Mishil began apologizing but was cut down by Namjoon.
"Yeah! No need to sweat. You threw away your family just like that. Why would you care for me?"
In all honesty, Mishil felt like all the blood in her body rushed up to her cheeks, out of hurt and anger. Namjoon felt a suddenly uncomfortable pit in his stomach and he, somehow knew that it wasn't something happening to him.
It was the girl next to him, whose eyes were now threatening to spill the salty after-effects of his words. Who wouldn't?
