Forty-Four
"She always overreacts to everything," George complained as he plopped down on his bed.
"She just cares about you," Calliope said, "she just wants you to be sure that you're making the right choice."
"And we are making the right choice, we've got it all planned out-"
"But she doesn't know that," said Calliope told the twins, "she doesn't know that you've made loads of money already from just the snack boxes alone. She doesn't know that you've got premises already sorted out, and most of all she doesn't know about the thousand galleons that you got from Harry-"
"-and she can never know about that," George reminded her.
"Maybe once she sees that you know what you're doing she'll lighten up, you two have just got to get on with what you're good at, creating things to make people laugh."
"You know it's ironic how good you are at speaking, considering all that time that you didn't do it," this comment earned Fred a whack around the head from Calliope, leaving George doubled over with laughter.
Calliope let out a sigh when attempting to discuss serious matters with either of the twins it often deviated into deflective humour. This joke hit a little too close to home, due to Calliope's reasoning behind not speaking for so many years; Fred was well aware of this reasoning, which was perhaps why his face immediately dropped and his laughter ceased when he saw the expression written across Calliope's face.
"Sorry Screamer," Fred hurriedly placed an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to him, "I was just joking."
"It's fine," Calliope gulped away the memories of the permanent guilt she had felt for years.
They sat in silence for a while, Fred casually stroking Calliope's hair as a thousand thoughts per minute ran through her head. She noticed the faint murmuring of the whispers in the corner of her mind but attempted to shove them back.
George began to hum, with an obnoxious smile on his face staring straight at Fred and Calliope.
"What do you want George?" Fred asked after George moved on to his second nursery rhyme.
"Nothing," said George, "just attention."
"Well, you've got it," Fred raised an eyebrow.
"Oh lighten up you two," George rolled his eyes, "today is a good day! Today we got to show that toad who's boss and we get to start our joke shop!"
"George is right," agreed Calliope, "you should be celebrating!"
"Yeah, we finally actually did it!" said Fred, seeming somewhat in awe as he realized the magnitude of what they had done, "we actually left."
"Yes we did," George grinned.
They sat in an awe-filled silence and Calliope didn't need to be able to sense Fred's emotions to feel the excitement and nerves radiating off of the twins.
Calliope began to realise the magnitude of what she had committed to as well. She loved Fred and she loved his passion and commitment to his dreams, she was somewhat envious that the twins knew without a doubt what they wanted to do with their lives. All that Calliope knew was that she wanted to save people. In the imminent future that meant save Sirius, as the whispers were growing ever louder warning of his approaching death.
Calliope was determined that no more people would die because of her. First, she would save Sirius, then she would save the rest of the wizarding world from Voldemort.
The twins had their joke shop ambition. Calliope had this one.
