Five
The purge of the extendable ears hit them hard. After Molly discovered them listening in to the Order Meetings, she turned the house upside down and confiscated the twin's entire stock of extendable ears.
"I spent all last year developing those," George complained as his mother left their bedroom having discovered the last stash of extendables that Fred had stuffed inside one of his school textbooks.
"I guess we'll have to start from scratch," Fred sighed.
"No, you won't," Calliope looked up from her position perched on the end of Fred's bed where she was writing a letter to Natalie.
"What do you mean?" George frowned.
Calliope said nothing, she just put her hand into the pocket of her jeans and withdrew a rubbery flesh coloured extendable ear.
"You're amazing," Fred grinned.
Calliope smiled and passed him the extendable ear, and returned to writing her letter. She wasn't allowed to write to Natalie as much as she wanted as it would look strange for owls to be going in and out of number twelve and would draw unwanted attention to the hidden house. Calliope was also unable to tell Natalie too much about what was happening, as even the small things she did know about the Order were highly secretive and if her letter was intercepted vital information could be given away.
"Your girlfriend writes fast," George observed. Both Fred and Calliope gave George a strange look, "What?"
"My what?" Fred asked.
"Girlfriend..." George eyed them.
"She's not my-" Fred said.
"I'm not his girlfriend," Calliope said.
"Oh..." George trailed off, "we all just assumed that you guys were... I mean..."
"Are you serious George?" Fred raised his eyebrow.
"No, he's downstairs said Calliope quietly, but wasn't heard by either of the twins.
"George I would have told you," Fred continued, "you're my brother."
Calliope suddenly felt like she was intruding on an extremely intimate moment between the two brothers.
"I'm going to have a nap," Calliope said. She picked up her letter and quill and made her way quietly out of the room.
Once she had returned to her own room and finished off her letter to Natalie, she decided that she would indeed have a nap, as that morning they had spent hours cleaning the dining room which had made her feel quite tired.
She fell asleep quite quickly, and napped for around an hour, before waking up and getting out of bed to seek Fred out and ask him how his conversation with George went.
She passed Hermione in the corridor, who must've been very absorbed in her own thoughts as she didn't even notice Calliope walking past her.
The door to the twins' room was open, and she could see Fred sat on his bed setting up a game of wizard chess.
"Why did George think we were dating?" Calliope sat down opposite Fred.
"Apparently they all think that we are," Fred glanced up from the chess board.
"Why in Merlin's name would they think that?"
"I don't know," Fred shrugged, "I guess my family don't believe that I can have platonic relationships."
"Who are you talking to?" Ginny stuck her head around the door.
"Who do you think I'm talking to?" Fred gestured to where Calliope was sat.
"Uh, yourself?"Ginny frowned.
"Gin, Callie is sat right there!" Fred gestured to Calliope again.
"No, Calliope is in bed," Ginny shook her head and walked away muttering about how Fred was losing it.
"What does she mean I'm not here," Calliope's breathing grew heavy, she put her hands out in front of her and saw that she could see the chess board lying on the bed through her hands. As soon as she spotted this the room around her disappeared and she sat bolt upright in her bed.
Fred skidded around the door and quickly grabbed her hands in his.
"You're okay Screamer," Fred's breathing was also heavy, but Calliope was on the edge of a panic attack, Fred pulled her in close and wrapped his arms around her and held her until her breathing slowed.
"What the hell was that?" Calliope asked once she had calmed down.
Fred thought for a moment, "I don't know what to call it, but whatever it was, it's the same thing you did last year."
