Chapter 16
A dull pain was the first thing that registered, followed by a warm that lightly touched his skin. The glow of the sun was vibrant but not blinding as he opened his eyes. Next was the sight of a figure sitting hunched over his body. Naruto smiled.
"Mornin, Ruto." He hummed in response letting himself relax, the presence of his dear friend comforting in many ways. Lifting the open flap of the large sleeping bag up he yawned. A chuckle escaped from Hiiro who recognized the familiar action. Oh, how he'd missed this. The boy understood Naruto was a busy person, but he also understood how much Naruto cared for him, similar to his own feelings towards the boy. He wasn't naive like Naruto was in that aspect, he knew there was a small flame in his heart, lit solely for the blonde boy and even though they hadn't been spending as much time together as when the two had first met the quality of time spent was still the same. Naruto still teased him just as much, receiving an equal amount of teasing back. They still both loved the close contact even if it wasn't 'normal' for two friends.
"M'hungry," Naruto mumbled as Hiiro slid his shoes and jacket off, slipping under the sleeping bag and the blonde's arm.
"Tsunami, Tazuna's daughter, is makin somethin' now so don't fall asleep." Naruto groaned and fought off the heaviness in his eyelids, opting to keep them open and watch Hiiro's body rise and fall. The steady rhythm was calming. Having Hiiro was calming. Like a n anchor that settled his feelings. "Sakura patched you up, so better be careful and not let those stitched open up again. Also careful with that shoulder, it'll be sore for a while, was dislocated," Hiiro filled the silence. Naruto buried his head into the other's hair.
"Dinn-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Naruto groaned at the shrill noise and tucked himself further into Hiiro's side, the later darting into an upright sitting position. Sakura stood agape at the door, the door slowly closing as no one moved. The pink haired kunoichi slowly peaked her head around the now still door, a hand over her eyes. She parted her fingers, green eyes locking on Hiiro.
"It's not what it looks like." Sakura gave him a doubtful stare.
"Whatever it uh is, Tsunami made dinner," she announced her original reason for coming into the room, "though it would be better if Naruto stayed up here and didn't use up too much energy. He's probably suffering from chakra exhaustion too; the shadow clone must have used up a lot of his reserves." Hiiro nodded, grabbing his jacket and putting it back on. He glanced down at the blonde who was back to sleep and a horribly sly idea crossed his mind. Would it be evil and result in his friend's teammate questioning the blonde? Yes. But would it also be incredibly funny to see the blonde try and piece together what his teammate was thinking? Also, yes.
He leaned back down and left a peck on the blonde's cheek, Sakura's burning stare glaringly obvious.
"I'll be back in a minute, Ruto," he mumbled in Naruto's ear. Not that the blonde could hear him. Hiiro walked behind Sakura, following into the kitchen. The grin threatening to break through as he could almost see the cogs in Sakura's head turning.
Sasuke gave the two a questioning glance as they reached the kitchen. He was loading up a bowl of fish soup and rice to take back up to Kakashi. Hiiro grabbed a similar bowl, mimicking the Uchiha as the young teens silently ate.
Hiiro went back up the stairs, leaving Sasuke and Sakura to discuss the mission, a bowl for Naruto and a bowl for himself in his hands.
Placing it down, he shook the blonde awake. Hiiro hummed a simple melody as he helped the blonde eat.
The sun was long set, candlelight illuminating the pair. It wasn't much different from how it was back home, Hiiro thought. Bedding on the floor, old house and a candle flame light dimly spread across the room while providing a small warmth. He was honestly content, all that was missing was the chatter of the energetic twins driving away the silence. The boy wished they were here in that moment, to complete the family.
Hiiro changed into a clean set of clothes, totally not slipping into a pair of the blondes' clothes on purpose. The two were just such similar size and Naruto's clothes were just so much comfier. Hiiro wouldn't mind if the blonde's teammates were to notice and just maybe if Sakura were to think back at the idea Hiiro planted in her head he supposed he wouldn't mind that either. The boy let the grin escape. It was just so much fun. He knew Naruto wouldn't catch on to what he was doing, not in the slightest and besides, what was a bit of harmless fun going to do.
Helping Naruto into another set of clothes that the Genin had brought, he stacked the bowls to the side and pulled the sleeping bad set out beside Naruto's closer. The thought of being close the other but not being able to enjoy the boy's warmth was something Hiiro was not willing looking forward to. The blonde's night visits had spoiled him rotten and there was no way he was willing to give up using Naruto as a living heater.
Pulling Naruto's sleeping bag open he let the boy lay back down onto it and threw his sleeping bag over him after unzipping it. He smiled at his handywork and grabbed the empty bowls.
The halls and kitchen were empty though he could hear Sasuke's voice two rooms over and supposed he, Sakura and Kakashi were chatting. He was relieved to hear the jounin up, worried after seeing the battle between the man and the missing ninja that had attacked them. Tsunami gave him a nod and a smile as he walked past her tucking Inari into bed. Hiiro hadn't seen the boy around, but he supposed the kid was just shy.
He placed the bowls in the sink and headed back to the room. Naruto was up as he entered the room, smiling as he saw Hiiro push the door open.
"Was wonderin' where you were, un," Hiiro made his way over the blonde. Lying beside him, Naruto threw the makeshift blanket over the other as Hiiro let out a sigh. The wave country wasn't really cold this time of year, but it wasn't hot either and the breeze coming from over the ocean was chilling. All in all, the warmth Naruto provided was more than welcome Hiiro decided.
