The Bribe
Young-do and I managed to get through the entire school day successfully. However successful you can be when everyone is staring at you, gossiping about you, and talking bad about you.
Young-do never left my side for the entire day. Not at lunch, not during P.E., and even when I went to the bathroom, he waited outside. I could tell he was very concerned for my well-being and how I would be able to handle this. He chalked it all up to the bodyguard contract, and said that he may even slash the price by 50%. I couldn't help but continue to wonder what this price would be...
We were standing outside of the school's entrance, and I was looking towards the direction of the hotel. "Young-do, maybe today I should walk home by myself." His eyebrows arched, and I could tell he didn't like the sound of this already. "Just until you get the articles off the internet and the stories off the news. We don't need to fuel the flames any further."
"I told you, Seo-yun, I don't care about what they think of me. I choose you in any situation, and I choose to walk you home." He argued. I sighed. "Please, Young-do. Do you want me to rest easy?" He nodded. "Then please, let me go home by myself. Just for today!" I begged. I could tell that he was opposed to the idea, but he wanted me to be okay. "Okay...only for today. Tomorrow, I get to walk you home, okay?" I smiled and nodded. "Okay." He held out his pinky and arched his brows. "Promise me."
I giggled and wrapped my pinky around his. "I promise, Young-do!" He smiled at me, released his pinky and pulled me into an impromptu hug. I gasped. "Young-do, but, people can see!" He shushed me, in a soothing way. "I don't care. You are my world, not them." He was so sweet sometimes that you could cry.
We both let go and said our goodbyes, and Young-do asked once again if I was sure about going back by myself, which I said I was. He made doubly sure my phone was on and even put himself on speed dial if I needed him. I could tell he was very concerned for me, which was much appreciated.
I was walking back home, feeling much more hopeful than I had been when I was sprinting and crying my way to school that morning. I started to daydream when all of a sudden, a limousine pulls up beside me. What is up with this all this limousines pulling up to me?
The driver got out of the limousine and walked towards me. "Miss Seo-yun Kim?" I nodded, a bit nervous. He bowed to me and opened the back door of the car. "Your presence is requested at the Choi residence. Please get in and I will take you there." I eyed him and the car. I thought about the last name and put two and two together.
"Oh, Choi! Like Young-do?" I asked. The driver didn't say anything except, "Please get in." His tone was a bit more threatening. Against my better judgement, I got in the limousine and he shut the door behind me, hopping back into the driver's seat. Perhaps Young-do was able to get all the stories off the internet and news and was ready to tell me the good news, or maybe he needed my help with fixing this mess. Either way, I wanted to be there for him.
It was a quick 10 minute drive until we arrived at the Choi residence. It was a humongous mansion with huge gates blocking the entrance. The car was parked on the side of the road and the driver got out of his seat and then came around to let me out. I stepped outside and looked in awe at the fantastic building. So this is how rich people lived.
The driver punched something into the pin pad on the door and the gates opened. He ushered me to go through and followed closely behind me. I walked in through the gates and looked at the lavish courtyard that was in Young-do's house. There were so many beautiful trees and plants, a fountain like the one at school, and so much land and space!
The driver let me in through a door to the house and stayed outside as I walked in. The floor was a beautiful white marble, the walls seemed to extend on and on, and there was a beautiful white staircase in the right corner of the room. Glass doors separated the other rooms from the main living room.
As I was standing agape at the beauty of the house, a man dressed as a butler and two women dressed as maids came up to me and bowed. The butler gestured towards the back of the house. "Please follow me. Mr. Choi would like to speak with you." I nodded, bowing back towards him, which judging by the shock on his face, nobody had done for him before. I followed him to the back room, which turned out to be a home office.
In the center of the room was a big desk and swivel chair, which was turned to the back so that I could only see the back of the head of the man occupying the chair. I smiled, feeling relief as I perceived the head to be Young-do. The butler bowed to me again and then left the room, shutting the door behind him.
I started moving towards the chair that was on the other side of the desk and smiled. "Wow, Young-do, you have a really nice place." I complimented.
The chair swiveled around to reveal an older man with glasses and a stern expression. He was wearing a nice suit and had his hands folded together. It was definitely not Young-do.
I blinked, a bit shocked. I remembered my manners and bowed to him, whoever he was. "Hello, my name is-" "I know who you are." The man said, coldly. He was giving me the deadliest glare I had ever seen since Rachel.
I froze and held my hands together nervously. "Y-You do?" I asked. He nodded. "You're Seoyun Kim. The girl who's been interesting my son, Young-do." I gulped. He gestured to the chair. "Have a seat." I reluctantly sat in the chair. It was as uncomfortable as the vibe in the room.
Young-do's dad sighed and cracked his knuckles. He leaned forward and locked eyes with me. "I intend to be very brief, so don't interrupt me with your immature thoughts." My eyes widened. Who did this guy think he was to talk to me like that? Well, Young-do's dad for starters, and the owner of Zeus Hotel.
"I know your type. The common girls who latch onto rich boys and get them to marry you so that you never have to work at another part-time job in your life. It's the perfect plan, and you get to mooch off the hard-earned money of the rich." I'm surprised my jaw didn't drop to the floor.
"And don't think you are so innocent that you can't possibly think that is what you're doing, because I know for a fact that it is. Young-do is just stupid enough to fall for it." My fists curled. I was getting angry at all these false accusations, especially when he called Young-do stupid. For some inane reason, I kept my mouth shut.
"What's bad enough, is you were so conniving that you happened to seduce Young-do and have his photo kissing you plastered around the world. You probably alerted the authorities yourself so that you could cash in on the scandal." My eyebrows furrowed. I felt like I was going to burst from the anger I was feeling.
"And that's why I'm going to offer you a deal."
My expression changed from furious to confused. A deal? What could he mean by that?
"I know that you and your mother are living out of Zeus Hotel in Seoul, at first at half-price. I have seen to it that that employee has since been fired for giving such bias to her own people." My heart sank. Mom's friend was fired because of us? I felt terrible. "I'm sure you're having a hard time paying for the luxury room that you are so wrongfully staying in. Even so, I would like to offer to let both you and your mother stay in Zeus Hotel for free as long as you would like in the very best suite."
My jaw dropped. The very best suite for free for as long as we wanted? Why was this guy going to reward me when he so obviously hated me?
"But there's a catch."
Ah, that's why.
"I need you to promise me that you will never see Young-do ever again. Don't appear in front of him, don't call him, avoid him at all times, and even if he comes to you, which he probably will given that he is so smitten with you, completely ignore him."
He brought out a white envelope and took out a couple hundred dollar bills from it, only a few from the huge stack that was in there. "Consider this a down payment on the hotel. There is plenty more where this came from." He put the money back in the envelope and slid it over across the desk to me.
"However, if you choose to be a hero and refuse this money because of your so-called love for Young-do, I will promptly kick both you and your mother out of my hotel and spread your name around in such a bad manner that not even the shabbiest apartment complex in South Korea will want to take you on as a tenant. You will be homeless, living out on the streets."
He glared his icy glare at me. "The choice is yours. What do you choose?"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He was basically banning me from ever having anything to do with Young-do, or kicking me out of our only place to live. This man was heartless. I couldn't believe that Young-do had come from this man.
I looked at the envelope, and then back at Young-do's father. I rose up from my chair and glared down at the man. "Your speech toward me was unjustified and appalling. Your threats towards me and my family are disgusting, and the fact that you think you could bribe me with money to stop seeing Young-do is utterly ridiculous." I shoved the envelope back towards him rather hard.
"I will never agree to your money. Kick me out of your hotel all you'd like. I would never give up on Young-do."
I couldn't describe the look on his face with words other than utterly shocked. The vein in his head was popping out of his head, and his eyebrows were furrowed angrily. His fists were curled so tight that his hands were shaking and he shot up from his seat.
"You disrespectful fool! You will be sorry!" Ah, that seemed to be rude rich people's favorite phrase.
I turned my back to him and walked towards the door. I opened it and looked back at him. "I am very sorry that you think so low of your own son. Young-do is an amazing, kind, gentle man, and he doesn't deserve to have you as a father. I'm glad that I can be there for him, now and forever. I will never leave his side, and no amount of money in the world could sway my thinking on that. Good day to you, Mr. Choi."
I slammed the door behind me and hurriedly ran out of Young-do's house, past the cleaning staff and other members of the household. They all tried to bow to me, but I was too quick for them.
I opened the front door and shut it behind me, prepared to run out and back towards the hotel to tell my mom we would have to be leaving soon, and also to call Young-do and tell him what had happened.
I turned back to my front and gasped when I nearly collided with someone. I looked up at him, eyes wide.
"Young-do!"
