A Real Connection

Nandita reached Sudeep and called out his name. "I don't know what is happening, or why it's happening but I know one thing, you have been honest with me from the start. I trust that."

Sudeep looked at her, still raw from the accusation, but her words slowly cut through the fog of doubt in his mind. "You really believe that?"

She nodded.

Sudeep looked at her, his brow furrowed. He wanted to believe her, but the doubts Aghorath had planted still lingered. "You say you trust me," he said, his voice quieter than usual, "but I can't help feeling like... maybe you don't. Not fully."Nandita looked at him, her heart tightening. She could sense his uncertainty, and it hurt her. Not because of the doubt itself, but because she understood it. Trust wasn't something that came easily to either of them. "I do trust you," she said softly, shifting closer, "but I think I understand why you're skeptical."Sudeep didn't say anything, but the question was clear in his eyes.

Nandita hesitated, her fingers tracing the hem of her jacket. This wasn't a story she shared lightly—or ever, really. She swallowed hard before speaking. "I haven't always been good at trusting people. In fact, for a long time, I didn't trust anyone. And that's because... well, I lost that sense of trust when I was a kid."She paused, and Sudeep's eyes flickered with curiosity, but also concern. Nandita took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her past press against her chest. "My parents died in a car accident when I was little. I was eight. They were driving home from a wedding, and there was a truck coming around a corner too fast." Her voice cracked, and she blinked back the tears that were already threatening to fall. "They didn't make it."Sudeep's breath hitched at the rawness in her voice. He hadn't known. He hadn't known any of this. He wanted to reach out, but he stayed still, sensing she needed to get it out.

"I was raised by my grandparents after that," Nandita continued, her gaze dropping to the ground. "They were good people, loving, but I felt... so alone. I blamed God. I blamed life. I blamed everyone. Why did they have to die? Why was I left behind?" Her voice shook with emotion, and the tears that had been held back began to fall freely.Sudeep felt his heart clench, hearing the pain in her voice. He had never imagined she carried this with her. To the world, Nandita always seemed so composed, so focused. But beneath all that was a wound that had never fully healed."I was angry," she went on, her voice breaking. "Angry at everything. I told myself that love was just a lie people told themselves to feel better, that faith was just an illusion. I shut myself off from anything that made me feel vulnerable." She looked up at Sudeep then, her eyes glistening. "I didn't let anyone in. Not friends. Not family. No one."Sudeep couldn't help but reach out now. He placed a hand gently on her arm, his touch a silent acknowledgment of everything she'd just shared. Nandita closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the warmth of his hand, grounding her.

"I threw myself into my studies, into work," she continued. "I moved abroad, away from everyone. It was easier that way. I thought if I could just focus on science, on things I could control, I wouldn't have to feel the pain of losing them. I wouldn't have to feel the hurt of being abandoned by fate." She let out a shaky breath, her voice softening. "And I never believed in anything again—love, faith, destiny. None of it."Sudeep's heart ached as he listened. He understood the feeling of being lost in one's own pain, but this... this was something deeper, something that had shaped who Nandita had become."And then," she said, wiping a tear from her cheek, "I met you."Sudeep looked at her, confused but touched. "Me?"Nandita nodded. "I don't know what it is, Sudeep, but since we've started this journey together, something's shifted inside me. For the first time in years, I feel... warm around someone. I feel safe." Her voice faltered, and the tears came again, this time freely. "I don't know why, but I feel like I can trust you, even though it scares me to."Sudeep's heart skipped a beat. He hadn't expected this. He hadn't expected to be the one to bring light into her life after all the darkness she had faced. He had only been trying to make sense of his own life, his own place in the chaos of the world.Without thinking, he reached out and gently wiped the tears from her cheeks. The gesture was soft, tender. Nandita's breath hitched at the touch, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into it, letting herself feel the connection she had been so afraid of for so long.

"I'm scared too," Sudeep whispered, his voice low. "But you don't have to be alone in this anymore. I am happy you are letting me in...little by little. And I am here no matter how long it takes."

Nandita looked into his eyes, feeling something she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years—hope. And maybe something more.

"You don't need to be perfect around me Nandita," Sudeep continued, his voice warm.

The space between them felt smaller, like a magnetic pull drawing them closer. Nandita felt the barriers she had built slowly begin to fall.

Slowly, tentatively, Sudeep leaned in, his hand still resting on her cheek. Nandita's breath caught, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the warmth radiating between them, the unspoken bond that had formed over the course of their journey together. For a moment, everything else—the mission, the dark sage, the prophecy—faded away. It was just them, in that quiet, fragile moment, inches from each other. But just as their lips were about to meet, they heard voices—Guruji and Dr. Mehra, followed by Dr. Ravi approaching. The spell was broken. They both pulled back, startled but smiling. The tension was gone, replaced by something softer, something unspoken but understood.Nandita let out a quiet laugh, wiping her eyes. "Guess we'll have to wait."Sudeep smiled too, his heart feeling lighter than it had in days. "Yeah... we should catch up with them."They stood, brushing off the dirt from their clothes. But as they walked toward the others, there was an unspoken understanding between them. Something had shifted. The walls that had once stood between them had crumbled, and though they hadn't fully crossed the line into romance, they both knew it was there—waiting, just out of reach.
