🌸DAY 7 — news🌸
On Wednesday afternoon, an anesthesiologist was called into [____]'s room to begin reversing the procedure and get the girl out of her blacked out state.
Dr. Shinso, and other pair of doctors and a handful of nurses, were in the room alongside her parents to update them on her condition. "Skin seems to be healing just fine, and her brain activity is in great shape. I'd give it less than a week at most until she shows that she is fully able to communicate with others. This paperwork is for you."
He handed Manato a stack of medical bills and extra charges in the form of parking tickets since the man kept leaving his car in front of the emergency room, a spot saved only for ambulances. "I'm sorry if I caused you or the staff in this room any trouble."
A few nurses took his apology well; given that a lot of times he had ran out of his daughter's room to ask for help because he swore he heard her voice or saw her move. "She responded to me!!" He kept chanting, "I asked if she still loved me and she said 'yes'!!!"
"Being a caring father comes with its consequences, eh?" The neurologist tried to picture himself in his shoes for a moment. Rich man, didn't have to work if he didn't want to— Married to a celebrity and has a daughter who's name is in the headlines of many articles. They obviously didn't fit; so he frowned. "My life can be a handful, too..."
"Eh? What?" Manato had taken a liking to the doctor; he had been monitoring [____]'s condition for a week now; he heard from other nurses that his quirk wouldn't let him sleep and so he spent almost all day taking care of his patients.
The man wanted to show his appreciation a bit more, so when Dr. Shinso was getting ready to walk out of the room, he stopped him. "Hey, wait. Let me write you a check— A tip, for watching over my precious daughter and for being patient with us. I know my wife and I being here all the time during visiting hours can bring some paparazzi lingering around the entire building.
This is a place for loved ones to come closer together; I found myself praying for her health in this room longer than I have prayed for anything in all of my life, anywhere. Please allow yourself to accept this gift—"
"I'm grateful, but I didn't choose this as my career for the—" 'money' was the word Hajime wanted to end his sentence with.
The amount of it written on the thin paper by the red-haired man was close to 2,200,000 yen. With this amount, he could buy his son a car. He could pay for his wife's credit card charges— not that there was a lot to begin with but they existed. He could remodel his kitchen, or even save it for summer time and take his family on a cruise. He always wanted to do something big for them like that.
The doctor was left speechless, he wondered if the man in front of him was truly made out of gold. Was it just a lucky coincidence that he was assigned to care for [____] Amachi, because of her insurance company? Or was it meant to be? Was he supposed to take this check and be done with it? But acting as if he just won some kind of lottery with the turn of events would make his only son upset; He had to be better than that.
"I'm sorry. I cannot accept your money. Your daughter's life is priceless to all of us. If you excuse me—" He managed to get out of the room as a professional. He walked faster towards his office and hated himself for being too prideful.
"What an American way of showing gratitude. If he offers me money again, I'll make sure I take it next time. It won't look too sleazy if I wait til then, would it? Of course it wouldn't. I don't need to ask myself that—"
There were a few light knocks on his door, the neurologist took a few seconds to get himself together and open it to greet the female dietitian carrying his lunch all the way from the cafeteria, just in time.
🌸DAY 8 — childhood memory🌸
Thursday after school, Izuku had a tough time telling his best friends he'd be too busy to attend a group study that Tenya and Momo invited him to a few days back.
He had bumped into Katsuki early in the morning, that's when the blond told the green-haired guy not to tell anyone about their meet-up. It was clearly supposed to be a secret.
Midoriya just gulped in response.
"Sorry I didn't tell you guys sooner...But its just that...It's my dad's birthday," He lied about that part in particular, he knew that event wasn't going to happen until another three months. "My mom and I usually have dinner together and call him; so it's I can't help but cancel my plans with you guys tonight. I completely misread my calendar and thought it was going to be next week. I hope you're not too mad at me..."
"Honestly, Midoriya..." Iida was about to list a few reasons why he was disappointed in his close friend, however he was cut short by the brown-haired girl with naturally rosy cheeks and a great smile.
"Deku! It's totally O.K! We're not mad at all! Have a nice time with your parents!"
"I suppose family time is more important, in this case. We can study together another time, most definitely..." His other friend changed his mind and with that, Izuku was in the clear.
💚💚💚💚
'I just lied to my two best friends for Kacchan's sake...I don't like this feeling of guilt, but I also can't break Kacchan's trust...It's been so long since he invited me over...I should probably come clean with my friends. Yeah, I will do that tomorrow..'
"I wonder what he wants to talk to me about, anyway...Im certain it might have something to do with Amacchan." Izuku muttered to himself while walking into the nearest convenience store close to Katsuki's home.
He purchased a few light snacks and drinks for them, in case Kacchan was in a bad mood and didn't want to offer him anything to eat from his own kitchen. "Of course it's about her...Kacchan probably read my texts and has been keeping his feelings to himself, like he always does."
"If that's the case, then I should probably buy him something to cheer him up! Let's see—" He marched right back into the drink aisle and found another one of his friends from school, who was inspecting a can of coffee milk while the refrigerator's door was kept open by his foot.
"Midoriya. It's just you." Hitoshi caught him staring for a while; perhaps Izuku was too busy worrying about what sort of lie he could tell yet another person, but in the end he thought there wasn't any reason to hide the truth from Shinso. After all, they were not even in the same class.
It's not like Midoriya to try so hard to keep his plans low-keyed; but he was wondering: "Shinso, what are you doing here, at this exact time?! In this particular store?!"
"I live around here." Hitoshi stated. "What's wrong with that?"
"Oh— so that's it. I, uhh— it's nothing. Sorry I reacted that way. You see, I came over to buy some stuff— but I'm leaving! I'm on my way home, now! Not anyone else's, so see you!!"
"— Wait."
"...Yes?" Deku had already grabbed the drink he wanted to purchase for Kacchan, he was on his way to the register area but Shinso telling him to stop made him turn back very timidly.
"Your classmate, the girl you said you were childhood friends with..."
"A-Amacchan?"
"Yeah, her." Hitoshi had been hearing rumors going around, even in the general studies classes. It wasn't like him to address matters that didn't involve him, but he had to tell someone what has been on his mind recently. Who better than the only guy he's O.K friends with in 1-A? "....I hope she's okay."
Midoriya slumped his shoulders a little bit forward, feeling less tense than before. "Yeah, I heard that she is...Hopefully we'll see her back in school before winter break starts..."
"That's great. Well, I'll see you."
Before he could say other embarrassing things to Izuku, Hitoshi finally closed the door of the drink display and walked past him, lightly moving his left hand to say goodbye.
Midoriya tried to read the guy's expression though it was hard considering that Shinso liked wearing a cotton-black face mask whenever he was out in public. He couldn't make do with just the look in his eyes, even if he tried.
'That's weird...It sort of looked like he was blushing. Was I just imagining it?' Izuku shook his head at that. 'No, wait! Why would I imagine anyone blush in front of me?!'
"I gotta get to Kacchan's...I'm already feeling anxious for no other reason..."
💚💥💚💥
He stood in front of the Bakugo residence at 6:01pm and took a deep breath before knocking four times. All he had to do next was wait a minute or two until the blond answered the door. "Kacchan?"
"It's just you...Right?" Although Katsuki couldn't see anybody else, he still asked.
"Yeah. I brought us a few snacks, in case you were hungry— WAH!"
He pulled him into his home with enough force to let the paper bag he was embracing fall onto the ground. While Midoriya tried to pick everything up on his own, Bakugo locked both of the doors.
'Is he gonna kill me?! Should I just run for it?!'
Katsuki cut his thoughts short with an unexpected, half-assed embrace. "K-Kacchan?!"
'Is this a hug?! Are we hugging?! We haven't hugged since we were six years old, probably!! Is he gonna stab me from the back?! Should I be this scared?! Because I am!!'
Izuku winced when the blond pulled away seconds later. Katsuki managed to laugh at him even after he was the one who went for it. "You were shaking. Gross."
"Was I..? But I wasn't expecting that at all."
"You told me I could come to you about shit if I'm feeling like it, right?!"
"That doesn't mean randomly corner me like that, Kacchan..."
"Whatever. I thought it would do something but it didn't, so forget it happened. Now, get out of here."
"I wont bring it up ever again, but...Is it okay if I stay a little longer? I was kind of hoping we'd talk more than this."
"Why?" When he asked that, Katsuki sounded more disgusted than surprised; and frankly it was the other way around. "I mean...Do whatever you want, nerd. I'll be in my room."
'Is this his way of inviting me in?' Izuku wondered.
💥💚💥💚
There they were, Katsuki sitting on his bed and Izuku on the floor, because he was just too afraid to get too close to the guy.
He was trying not to stare so much at the couple of band posters planted on Bakugo's wall or the video game and hero figures on his shelves. 'Kacchan's room has changed...I don't remember it being this organized, as kids.'
Midoriya scattered the bag he brought with him on the floor once again, this time by choice, and began to separate the items into two groups. One pile for him, one for his childhood best friend.
"I don't know if you still like this flavor of soda, but I got you a can and a juice mix, just in case..." Midoriya didn't know what else to talk about, so he began panicking again— speaking faster than usual. "I also bought two bags of All Might chips, it says it comes with a collectible sticker and one is a hologram, knowing how lucky you are with these types of things I figured you'd get it on the first try. Sorry! You probably already tried these chips, havent you?
Kirishima said once that you liked this sort of candy because it was really spicy. Apparently, nobody in your team could eat it but you somehow went through the whole bag and I find that impressive! Actually, while we're on the subject of impressive, I had been studying some of your new moves lately and I know you don't take criticism that well, but I'm willing to tell you anyway because you seem like you won't kill me today...I think you should—"
"— Izuku." Katsuki muttered his name, and Midoriya zipped his lips faster than Minoru's innocence streak. "....Do you remember your birthday party, when you turned eight?"
"A bit blurry, but yeah. I do."
"Do you remember what she said, that day?"
"Who said what to who? Are you talking about Amacchan?" Izuku only remembered because that was the only party he invited [____] to. He kept trying his best to remember the rest. "I don't know..."
"Think back to it. The three of us were in your living room while aunty was decorating your cake."
'Oh, that's right.' Izuku thought. 'If I can recall correctly...it was the only time Amacchan spent the night with us...'
🌸seven n a half years ago, or so🌸
"Alright, kids. We can watch one more All Might documentary before we cut the cake, and then it's bedtime after presents..okay?"
Inko Midoriya was hosting her only son's birthday party, like she did every year. The difference this time was that Izuku hadn't made a lot of new friends, and even if he did— There was only two people in the world he wanted to invite over; it was Mitsuki's loud son and the quiet, wealthy girl from their class.
Mitsuki knew Inko since middle school and trusted her with her life, so she was more than okay with letting little Katsuki spend the night if he wanted to— Which she prayed that he would because it was free babysitting and there was no way Mrs. Bakugo would pass an opportunity to dine at a fancy new restaurant she had been dying to visit with her husband and leave her little brat in someone else's care.
On the other hand, Mrs. Midoriya had to call numerous people before she could get in touch with the Amachi's. She knew [____]'s parents were hard working people with not much time in their hands but she wasn't expecting them to send Izuku's classmate over with a maid as chaperone. But there the lady in her late twenties was, offering her services to Inko since she had taken a liking to her.
While the two adults kept each other busy with light conversations and decorating the homemade All Might cake; little Bakugo kept teasing the only girl sitting on the couch, in between him and Midoriya.
"Stop!" [____] warned. "Stop poking me! I'll tell your mom!"
"She's not here, dummy." Please note that at this age, Katsuki didn't learn any new curse words and was stuck with the dialect of a cute innocent little angel. (Or so everyone thought at that time.)
"I will tell her when I see her!"
"Nobody likes a rat. What're you gonna tell her anyway? That I was doing this?!" He pinched the side of her exposed arm, making the girl obviously upset. "Are you gonna cry? Is the freak gonna cry?"
"Stop!"
"Kacchan, please don't start fighting with Amacchan on my birthday—" the quirkless boy pleaded. "Amacchan, let's change seats if you'd like."
"Quit bothering me, Katsuki!! I'm here for Izuku, not you!!" [____], at the time, had just manifested her quirk and it was still new to her.
Whenever she was upset, and it was almost always with Katsuki around, she would uncontrollably activate it around her and have anything coming her way leave through another portal.
It creeped Bakugo out; how scary it was that some part of his body could be so far away from him, yet remain intact. "Ew, you're such a freak, I swear!"
"Then leave me alone, if I gross you out this much, thanks!" [____] had enough of the blond by then. She got up from the couch to sit on the floor instead of switching seats with Izuku.
She was close to the boy's legs, though, so she wrapped her arms around them because he made her feel protected, somehow. "Izuku, why did you have to invite him to the sleepover? I would of liked it better if it was just the two of us."
"Wh-What?!" Deku didn't think about girls in any romantic way; not at that age at least. However, [____] had become very clingy towards him and he couldn't help but act shy whenever she touched him. "...I invited Kacchan over because he's my best friend."
"I thought I was your best friend!"
"You are! I can have two best friends. It's okay."
Katsuki narrowed his eyes at the two of them, expecting Deku to shake her off already. If he was truly his best friend, as he claimed, then he wouldn't let a girl get close to him; specifically [____].
"Izuku, you're my only best friend. Katsuki can go to sleep and not wake up for all I care." [____] stuck her tongue at the red-eyed boy, he did the same to her. "I want the two of us to share the bed, and he can sleep on the floor!"
"Yuck, you rather sleep close to someone like Deku? He can't protect you, even if he tried. He still thinks there's monsters living under his bed."
"There are!!" Izuku wasn't expecting his friend to spill one of his embarrassing secrets just like that. "Kacchan, why would you mention that?!"
"He doesn't have to protect me from no one, because now that I have my quirk I can protect myself and him if he wants me to, so suck on that!" [____] retorted.
"That's what you think. Even with your nasty quirk, one day you're gonna be so terrified of something so bad...that you're gonna end up having to rely on someone to make you feel better.
Its not gonna be quirkless Deku, either. You'll figure out by then that no other person can be as fearless as me. I'll look those monsters right in the eye before I kill them, if they do exist. 'Cause that's what heroes do!!"
"Kacchan, how cool!" Izuku clapped his hands, he was more moved than [____] could ever be by his words.
[____] was slightly jealous of the bond the two guys shared. Whatever it was; something about Katsuki made Izuku swoon— For that reason and many more, she disliked him as kids.
"The only monster in our life is you, Katsuki." She claimed on that night, with her middle finger softly pulling down the skin under her right eye to mock him.
"Idiot girl— Is that so?!" He overheard her words; which he took offense to them way more than her gesture. "I'll burn you to ashes!!"
"Kacchan, no!! Don't use your quirk in my home, please!!" — "Let go of me, Deku!! Or I'll kill you first!!" — "Kacchan, don't hurt Amacchan! You can hurt me but it's my birthday, do you really wanna do that?!" — "I said LET GO!!"
Inko has just noticed that the kids' loudness meant they were actually fighting, and not messing around. She dropped the stack of paper plates she was holding on to from the kitchen and rushed to separate the boys. "Do not activate any quirks here! Katsuki, I will call your parents!"
"Aunty, why?!"
As Bakugo tried to put up an argument with Midoriya's mom regarding his innocence in the situation; Izuku held on to [____]'s wrist to remind her that everything was fine.
"Sorry that Kacchan scared you, just now." He said this because he could see in [____]'s face, how hard she was trying to move while they were fighting. She felt useless whenever she froze up around Katsuki and his quirk. Maybe it was some form of ptsd, back then...She wouldn't of known for sure.
"....Why should I care if he's fearless? It doesn't affect me the slightest." She murmured to herself when everything was fixed and Izuku's mom called them over to the dining area to get some cake and dessert.
Every so often...Katsuki would say strange things to her. She didn't know why, and back then, apparently he didn't either.
💥💥end of flashback💥💥
"Maybe she was right." Katsuki whispered. "I know it's stupid to think so, since we were just dumbass kids when she said it. Even so, I keep wondering if that's truly how she sees me as...nothing but a monster."
'So that's what Kacchan has been dwelling on for the last few days..' Izuku tried to listen longer; but after that Katsuki had nothing else to say so he tried to cheer him up with a smile. "I didn't know you remembered our childhood that well. I'm kind of happy that—"
"— Shut up. I didn't mean to bring this up because of you. I only know this much because I remember how she used to be like, when we were younger."
Midoriya forced a little laugh. "I see...Amacchan has always been pretty cute. As kids...I thought so, too."
"You came in here to listen to me or to get murdered?" Katsuki threatened.
"Y-You got it all wrong! It's not like that! I really only see Amacchan as a friend, I promise!" He defended himself, arms raised so close to his chest. "I'm just saying...It's not shameful to be in love with someone. You shouldn't think of it as a problem, really. It's only natural at our age—"
"Fuck you, Deku. Nobody is saying I'm in love with Cheeks!"
"Kacchan, you didn't say it! But I know, because the three of us spent time together. I could see it back then, too." Midoriya offered Bakugo a can of orange soda to make peace and not get killed for saying such a thing. "Personally...I believe Amacchan is a great person to fall in love with—"
Katsuki took the can out of his hand, but only to shake it with all his anger and open it in front of Izuku's face; blinding him for a moment with the carbonated sweet drink. "Are you a fucking moron?! No— She is not!!"
Izuku coughed whatever liquid went up his nose and the blond got up to open his closet and pull out a clean bath towel to throw at his guest's legs. "Here. Clean yourself up, you nerd."
Midoriya gratefully took it and began patting his face and hair dry while Bakugo kept on ranting. "She's so freaking stupid; I'm honestly so surprised she hasn't been groped yet by some weirdo in the train or something! She's dumb enough to hide that kind of shit from others, if it happens, ya'know?!
I absolutely hate that I feel like I have to stay next to her, otherwise she'd disappear completely— like how she did last week!! What the hell was that about?!"
"Kacchan..." Izuku tried to speak up. He wanted to explain to him what he had been writing in his hero notes about [____]'s quirk. It was just a theory, though, so there wasn't any credibility behind his opinions. He kept his mouth zipped closed until Katsuki would cool down.
"— But like, she is so goddamn beautiful. I might have to start burning every person's eye sight off before they realize it too..and how the fuck can they not? Everything about her, physically, it's so perfect.
So if I go by what you're saying, Deku...If, let's say, figuratively...I was in the middle of falling in love with anyone...Then why couldn't it had been some ugly ass motherfucker who can at least fight for themselves, huh?!
Doesn't that shit sound less annoying than dealing with [____] and her fucking cuteness?! I can't take this shit!! I rather die at this point!! Too bad I'm too fucking awesome to do that shit to myself."
'No...Isn't that a bit unhealthy...?' Midoriya remained in shock from how honest the guy in front of him was being. 'Poor Kacchan...He really doesn't know what to do with his emotions.'
"— And I hurt her." Finally, Katsuki licked his lips and finished his tirade with that.
"What?! No, you didn't! What happened last week was really all just a huge accident!!" The green-eyed guy immediately stood up, the crimson colored towel still in his hand. He squeezed it from so much intensity radiating from his chest. "Kacchan, don't say that!! You know it wasn't your fault!"
"You didn't get to see her, Deku. The burn marks on her body...They obviously happened because of me. I wasn't trying to do it on purpose, but it still happened. I can't even look in the mirror lately, I feel like I've been nothing but a fucking monster to her."
"Kacchan, you're not a terrible, evil monster that spews fire when upset—"
"I didn't say I was all of that. What the fuck?!"
"— Right, I heard wrong. I'm sorry." Midoriya cleared his throat and got back down to his knees, messing around with the snacks he placed on the floor earlier. "I'm just saying...Even if you're mean to others...That doesn't make you a bad person at all. You accidentally hurt Amacchan, sure, but so did Todoroki and he has been talking to the school counselor to cope with his guilt."
Katsuki kicked the bag of chips Izuku was just about to grab just to make him mad; It didn't work. "You think I should go see the school's shrink? Fuck no."
"If that's not an option for you, then maybe talking with your friends and family might work just as well..."
"Don't wanna worry my folks...and everybody else I know are real-life idiots. They wouldn't understand."
'Does that mean Kacchan doesn't think I'm an idiot?' It definitely made him happy, but Deku had to vigorously shake his head for a second to focus on the subject again.
"Of course, there is nobody in the world who can fully understand you, Kacchan. That's because your thoughts are your own, nobody else can have them.
But sometimes, sharing them with others can really help you feel better. You probably think it's a form of submitting into your weaknesses, but I find that the more you embrace that insecurity of yours...The more stronger you become..?"
Deku's voice was sounding more frail, the more he kept talking. It was clear he didn't know if there was any lines between them that he shouldn't cross; Katsuki liked it this way. To know that he could still be intimidating, even when he was feeling like a grade S loser.
"It's too bad that none of us can see Amacchan until she's all better. Her grandmother doesn't let anyone visit her besides family..."
Katsuki responded to that. "Grams said she'd sue my parents if I get too close to her; even when she's back in school."
"What?! That's terrible!" It was the first time Izuku had heard about it; he made sure he opened a fresh bag of chips to hear more about [____]'s dramatic life. "Amacchan's grandmother sounds like a cold person!"
"Yeah, she fucking sucks but I don't think I can blame her on this; she just wants cheeks to stay safe...I'm not safe."
He chewed on a few more chips and even licked two of his fingers before replying. "Kacchan, that's not true! You're the most outstanding citizen I know."
"What is that— a compliment?! Fuck, you give some shitty ass compliments, I don't care for them!!" Katsuki wanted to throw another drink at his childhood friend; but couldn't because he also wanted to drink some later.
He took a deep breath or two instead to get over how annoying Izuku was. "You stalked me for years and I didn't kill you for that, so now you owe me."
"Huh?! What?!" Midoriya blushed at his straight forwardness. "I didn't—! I didn't stalk you, I swear!!"
"Quit lying. Now that we're speaking about this you even wrote about me in those dumb journals of yours, right? Earlier, you were talking about studying my moves and shit...Nobody is paying me shit to be watched like this!! So you either pay me 200,000 yen for every year that you followed me around or you do whatever I say for the next month or so! What's it gonna be, eh?!"
'It seems like Kacchan only wants someone to listen to him...He's using this as a tactic to get me to come by often, from here on now to be that person...' Midoriya took mental notes of his friend's new and unlocked emotions.
"Are you listening, nerd?! Oi!!"
'It's no use...This is not it. This isn't healthy at all, Kacchan! But you refuse to talk to a counselor, or your parents. You can't talk to our friends, because you think they'll think less of you.
You can't talk to Amacchan, either...She's the one you want to apologize the most. This is a tricky situation, but it's not like I mind coming over and hanging out with you, just like old times...'
Izuku figured that he really didn't have anything to lose but rather, perhaps regain a friendship. Also, he did not have the kind of money to pay Kacchan a million yen more or less. So, naturally, he caved into all the madness.
"Alright, Kacchan...I'll do the second option, but...Do you mind if we meet up like this, at least once a week? We can also talk on the phone if you'd like...I wanna hear more about what's bothering you."
He had known Katsuki long enough to master his speech around him. He couldn't just say 'sure, I guess I have to do as you say' or 'If you want me to come over and be your therapist, then just ask me' because then he'd really have to pray for his life each time he closed his eyes before bed.
"What a freak...asking me for shit like that." Bakugo answered back, but didn't exactly say 'no'.
