"Will you be able to start this week? I can give you a set schedule from Thursdays to Sundays if that's okay. If so, you can stop by tomorrow at 7 pm for the start of your shift training, though."
"That's what the old lady said after that strange guy left..." [____] remembered the exact words she used as she walked back to the train stop. "I can't help but think that he had something to do with the quick hiring process...I'm never this lucky to get a job on the spot..."
'Ah, I'm so happy!' She thought to herself. 'This means I can buy ice syrup for Taro after all! Tomorrow, after school— I'm going straight to the ice cream shop to buy some!'
💎💎💎💎
[____] entered her small home a little later than she was expecting thanks to her last trip to the soba place, "I hope he didn't fall asleep...he'll be starving in the morning if he doesn't eat something tonight..Hm?"
"ROAR!" Her little brother was standing right in front of her, using an ice mask he had made out of his own quirk to scare her.
She wasn't fazed at all. After removing her shoes and placing them by the side of their front door, [____] walked into the kitchen. "Sorry I'm late, Taro. I stopped by some stores to apply and got hired in one place, actually...eh? Are you supposed to be a hero, right now?"
She finally noticed her little brother's attempt of impersonating someone. "No, sis!! I'm a villain! You're the hero, this time!"
"...But I don't even have a quirk?"
The boy stomped his left foot a couple of times, slightly annoyed with his older sister's lack of excitement. "It doesn't matter! You can still play pretend!! You can save my prisoners if you give me what I want!!"
He pointed at their small, old couch. Showing [____] who his 'prisoners' were, exactly. One beat-up All Might action figure, and a few other badly drawn heroes on paper.
'I gotta get him more toys...This is a little sad, if I think about it too much..'
The high school girl shook her thoughts away and gave her baby brother a smile. "Okay! I'll be their hero! What do you want, villain?"
"Food!!"
💎💎💎💎
"Ah...I can't keep up with his energy..." She sat down on the couch, exhausted after running around, chasing Kantaro while their dinner was in the process.
Once they finished eating, he went to take a bath all on his own. He stopped wanting his sister to help him get clean after he turned five years old and [____] wasn't quite sure how to feel about it, even after a whole year has passed.
"One day, Taro is going to be old enough to make his own decisions in life...Kind of scary...He's basically only reason I'm working so hard, right now. When he grows up and decides to live on his own...Will my heart, then, feel fully empty?"
[____] asked herself while tidying up the kitchen and making sure their portable stove was disconnected. As she was moving towards the small living room area, [____] picked up all of her brother's drawings.
"He really loves heroes. I would of felt the same way, if a hero could of saved mom on time..."
She shuffled through the thin pieces of paper, trying to read every hero name she could make from his sloppy handwriting. "Edgeshot, Best Jeanist, All Might, Endeavor?"
'I completely forgot about the action figure I bought for him!'
It was late; and [____] didn't feel like letting Taro stay up all night just to play with his brand new toy, like how she knew he was going to request. So she decided to hide the box in one of the kitchen's cabinets, saving the surprise for later.
💎🌸💎💥
"Today is Wednesday..." [____] reminded herself after her last class was over, the very next day.
'I'm off at my part time job; and I don't have anywhere else to be except for the soba shop at seven...So, I can go buy that ice syrup now, I guess...'
She rushed towards a small shopping complex by the nearest train station after school, where she accidentally bumped into a group of friends that were stepping out of a McDonald's building. "Oh! I'm so sorry!"
"Watch where the hell you're going, idiot." One of the guys basically snapped at her, making [____] feel confused for a moment.
'Isn't it normal to say 'don't worry about it' and move on...? Why is this guy acting like such a jerk? Oh, but he's so pretty."
"Pay no attention to my buddy— It was our fault, for not looking before opening the door. So we are sorry." The guy with long spiky red hair apologized for his friend's behavior.
"No, it's okay...I shouldn't be running in such a busy sidewalk, like that..." Although [____] wasn't expecting to have a full blown conversation with the strangers, she still couldn't believe they walked away without listening to her apology one last time. She stood there, a little perplexed for half a second. "Okay, kind of mean of him to ignore me as well, but I guess...?"
"So, hey!! If your house is as big as I'm thinking, then you should totally host a sleepover, whenever we get the chance to hang out all night!" A girl with pink skin tone and banana-colored horns on her head smiled brightly at her short friend as they also walked out of the same building.
There was a taller guy with black hair next to them but he wasn't talking— more willingly, he was looking at his phone. "We can play spin the bottle or even seven minutes in heaven, yeah?!!"
The other girl's tone of voice was much quieter. [____] couldn't comprehend her very well as they followed after the first two guys. "Mina— I don't mind, but...It'll have to be when my parents are out of the country. They can be a little bit too much..."
'That girl, I recognize her.'
[____] watched the clique pass by in separate batches; she raised an eyebrow, pondering about it for a little bit. "I got it!"
'She's the girl who left running the old lady's soba shop, last night...She seems to have so many friends....I wonder why she rushed out of there, completely alone...
I'm sure it doesn't matter.'
💎💎💎💎
"Thank you very much, please come again!" The kind cashier from the gelato shop smiled goodbye at [____] after her purchase.
"I was able to buy two syrup flavors... Mango and watermelon. Taro will love these!" The girl happily thought out loud as she frolicked back to the train stop to get to her home, passing by a set of other shops. "I can't wait to see his face when he sees his brand new toy, as well!"
"Whoa, darling, look! A sale!"
The one word [____] couldn't ignore; a middle-aged woman called it out to her spouse. The high school girl turned back to see the bright red sign that she kept pointing at.
'Beauty products...? But I don't even own any makeup and I don't have the extra money to splurge myself like that...'
💎💎💎💎
But she did have the extra time to do some light window shopping; so she entered the place and was immediately greeted by an overly cheerful associate. "Welcome!! Please let me know if you need assistance!"
"Hi! Hello! Thank you..." [____] smiled at her, then made her way further into the store hoping she wouldn't bump into another loud person who worked there.
The small and colorful row of sheet masks caught her attention; they were priced at 270 yen, each. The cutesy designs and pictures of youthful women touching their clear face fascinated her for a moment.
'Girls my age use stuff like this on occasions, don't they? I hear a lot of my classmates talk about makeup and face creams all the time during lunch...'
"Maaaan, I wish I could afford something like this every now and then....Hm?"
She overheard a couple of girly yelps across the aisle she was in, followed by some whispers. "Hey, look!"
"Hina, it's not nice to stare!"
"I know, but isn't he like, so hot?!"
"Who are you pointing at— Oh, wow, you're right! He looks younger than us, though. Probably a high school student? Senior?"
"Hey...Do you think he'd like to hang out with us? We should totally ask him out! I'm gonna do it!!"
"But what if he's here with his girlfriend?! A guy like him doesn't just hang out in a girly store by himself. Not unless he's taken or he's into drag or somethi— Hey, Hina! Are you seriously leaving me in mid-sentence to go talk with him?!"
[____] took a peek at the person the two women were gawking over thanks to the high school comment, she wondered at first if it could be someone she knew. '...Isn't that the guy I met yesterday, too?! I keep bumping into these people...How strange...'
"Same uniform..." [____] whispered to herself after taking her eyes off the stranger's unique hair color. 'He's wearing the same uniform as the people I just saw, I realized. Wait, why should I care?'
[____] tried focusing back on the sheet masks she was looking at in the first place. She grabbed a couple just to read the ingredients in the back of the label, while evidently listening to the conversation unfolding in the next aisle.
"Hi there! What brings you in here, cutie? My name is Hina, what is yours?"
There was a small pause before the guy answered her question with one of his. "....Do you work here?"
"Eh?! No..."
"...I see."
[____] felt a little bit of second hand embarrassment from the silence that followed. Although the sound of the cashier checking out items and other customers inside gasping about the sale products; she felt as if the entire store was pretty quiet and it was only those two speaking that she could hear.
"W-Well! Are you here with someone?" The young woman cleared her throat. "Did your girlfriend drag you along with her in here— Isn't it kind of lame of her to do that, hahah?"
"No..." Was all that the guy said, until he held up two items almost really close to her face. "Do you know...What's different about these two things?"
"The left one is mascara, for your eyelashes. The clear one on your right is a serum— It's like, treatment for them rather than makeup."
"Thanks. And what about these two? What would you buy?" He asked, showing off two different colored eye shadow palettes. One with cool blues, the other warm browns.
"E-Eh? Um...I'd buy the brown palette, since it matches my eyes. So, anyway, you and me should totally, like—"
"Thank you for your help. Where is your tip jar?" He interrupted her invitation.
"I told you, I don't work here! Hey, can you listen to me, first? I'm trying to ask you out, I mean—!!"
"— If you don't work here, then you should. You know a lot about these things..." He made his way around her to get to the end of the store, to the registers. "Excuse me, I have to go pay now."
"What? B-But..."
"Hina-chan..." her friend whispered in disbelief. [____] hadn't noticed she was hiding beside her, the shelf containing the mask sheets was a perfect barricade between the two aisles. With enough space to see what was happening. "You're losing your cool..."
'I should get out of here while I can...It's not right to listen to others' conversations...Though, it's funny. I would also lose my cool if I keep trying to talk to a guy like him...He's...cold?'
With that thought in mind, [____] placed the items she was holding on to back on the display shelf and accommodated the strap of her bag to get ready to leave.
Before she could walk out of the store, though, the machine in the front doors began to beep loudly. [____] panicked, dropping her bag on the floor accidentally and searching her pockets to find a travel sized eyeliner in it. 'I forgot...I was holding on to this, first. I must of placed it inside my coat by accident...'
"Hey, you! Don't move!" A tall security guard called out to her, making even more customers inside face their way. "What did you steal?"
"Sir...It was an accident. I didn't mean to place this in my pocket, I got distracted—"
"Yeah, right. I've heard that plenty of times. What is it with you, high school girls, stealing makeup? Does mom not give you enough money to buy it?"
The man didn't intend to hit a nerve on the quirkless girl, he was just trying to lecture her; Though the moment her eyebrows knitted together in anger, the man stopped speaking and continued to search her very badly by just patting down her coat. "Nothing else."
"I told you. It was just on accident!"
"Don't do it again."
"I won't!"
'I won't even so much step inside this store ever again!' She announced it to herself, crouching down to begin picking up her school bag.
The security guard offered his help & with the death glare [____] gave him next, he assumed it was fine for him to take the pocket-sized beauty product and walk away.
'This was so freaking embarrassing. I hear people whispering and laughing. I hate myself for coming in here, but I hate that man even more for assuming such a thing about me! But what else can I do but get my things and walk away?'
A cold hand suddenly touched hers by mistake; [____] was taken aback by how icy it felt. She realized it belonged to the guy she had met the day before. "You..."
"—This is all of it, is it not?" The guy with beautiful and different colored eyes asked her.
[____] nodded a little. "Thanks for helping."
"You seem familiar. Do I know you?"
"Eh? I wouldn't....say...Not really..." [____] stood back up after collecting her things and caught herself looking at the floor for some reason. "I...Guess we met before?"
'It feels like he's staring at me. I can't even look at his face, why is he making me feel nervous?! This isn't the first time we ever talked!'
"You're the girl from last night, aren't you? ...The soba lady, did she hire you?"
"Um...She did."
"That's good news."
"Yeah."
There was a mini pause, which was interrupted by his cell phone, playing a small ringtone. He didn't bother to look at it, he instead gave [____] a single nod and took a step closer to the glass doors. "I have to go. I hope to see you more often."
"Right..."
