Chapter 36: Synchronized!
"It seems someone shut her down again. You said it was from the mention of her cyber doctor and that case possibly being connected, somehow?" Nezu, whose paws were behind his back, kept his beady eyes on the unconscious cybergirl.
"Yeah, she just blacked out," Ochaco confirmed with a nod and clenched a loose fist in front of her chest.
"I see, very well. I've noticed that she seems to shut down every time any mention of her personal issues is brought up. For example- when I had her visit me in my office, with Mr. Aizawa escorting her, and spoke about someone who could possibly hack into her. And now, when she mentioned her cyber doctor and that case, perhaps there's a link here..." mumbled the Principal when his paw touched his chin, in thought.
"Uh..." a soft whimper came from Kirishima's arms, which in turn, caused all heads in the classroom to turn and see her. A pair of blue eyes closed, then groggily opened again, showing that life had returned to them. "What's... Going on?" This time when her head lifted and looked up, her face was incredibly close to red astonished eyes.
Their noses almost touched, his cheeks burned like flames and hers lit up like a Christmas tree. Recognition of their closeness made both of their eyes widen simultaneously and for them to become flustered. Quickly, she sat up and placed her hands into her crossed legs, where the boy simply whipped his head away with a hand behind it.
Uviel didn't even hear her own cute sound she made when she bolted up into a sitting position. Why was he so close?! Was it me?! I didn't even see him leaning over, did I?! AAAH! I felt his nose on mine! her thoughts, full of embarrassment and surprise, echoed.
W- What were the chances of that?! She didn't even look before lifting her head! I felt her nose and she looked so cute like that! Her eyes, I almost got lost in them! It seemed, even Eijiro was panicking from their closeness. The amount of embarrassment he felt was too overwhelming, to the point where he just had to lower his head and hide his face.
"Ah, I see you're awake now. That's good- because tomorrow you have practical exams to finish," Mr. Aizawa reminded Saito and sighed, just to feel his eardrums pound from the cries of Ochaco and Momo.
"You're okay!" Both of the girls spoke in unison and hugged the girl on either side.
"I'm so glad you're okay!" Uraraka couldn't help but feel relieved, as her bright smile never faltered from the joy she felt. I think I get it now! How she just acted- I think she likes Kirishima! her thoughts swarmed like bees in a hive, trying to put pieces together for some answers. Why didn't she answer me before, then? Now she was curious, though when Nezu spoke again her attention moved to him.
"Miss Saito-- It seems, that my guesstimate is correct. However, we cannot speak of your situation freely since you seem to shut down at any mentions relating to specific subjects," His small feet soon turned to face their teacher with a nod given to him and his smile refused to lower by even a fraction. "Mr. Aizawa, Edgeshot will be filling in for her spot since Uviel will have a partner now. A letter came into my office from the Department of Support, from class 1-H . I'll fill you in on more details later, so as to not spoil any surprises! Now, if anything else were to happen to Saito, please inform me and I will excuse her of all events and classes until her issue is resolved. Have a good day!" After his explanation, Nezu waved his furry paw and quietly left the room to the students.
Hm, we'll have to be careful then. Echoed the thoughts of their teacher, before he spoke. "Alright... Let's meet up for the practical exams and be sure to wear your costumes," With that- Uviel stood to her feet and gave Kirishima a glance over her shoulder, who gave her a beaming smile in return to hide his embarrassment.
~~~Next Day~~~
There, before everyone's eyes, stood eight teachers all side by side that stared at them in return. "Now, we will begin the practical exam. Of course, it is possible to fail this exam. If you want to go to training camp, then don't make any stupid mistakes," Aizawa's voice reached everyone's ears, causing a few students to murmur among themselves.
What did Principal Nezu mean by 'Edgeshot will be filling in'? Her curious and confused eyes remained on the teachers but on occasion, they would glance at Eijiro. Each time she did, her cheeks would burn and force her to look away so she could pay attention. Why is he so hot?! Why did I just say that?! AAH! Damn, my curiosity! Her thoughts raged and fought hard to stay focused, while the darker redhead stood near her; his attention was dead-set on the teachers.
"I expect that you all have gathered information ahead of time and have some idea of what you're doing," as if on cue to Shota's assumption, Denki leaned back and spoke.
"We're fighting robot warriors like at the entrance exam, right?!" Not only was it him, but Mina also followed after his outburst with a fist pumped and spouting out fireworks, curry, and a test of courage as her words.
"Too bad. For various reasons, the exam will be different starting this time!" Out from their teacher's scarf, popped out their Principal whose paw rose as a greeting.
"Principal Nezu!" Three boys announced in unison and seemed astonished at his sudden appearance. Momo was the only one, after them, who questioned the main thing that left everyone confused.
"Different?" Worry filled her eyes as beads of sweat rolled down her face.
"From now on, we want to focus on person-to-person combat and hero work, and stress teaching that is closer to actual fighting," When the white creature made his way down Aizawa's arm, he explained, then pointed to everyone soon after. "So... We'll have you form teams of two, to fight against one teacher!" A shadow veiled over his face after he said that last part, before raising his arms and changing the vibe.
"A- Against, the teachers?" Uviel muttered, surprised by the announcement. The grip on her retracted Decennial staff tightened and was unaware of her own lips parting; she wasn't expecting a sudden change like that. The cybergirl didn't appear to be the only one uneasy about the idea of fighting the teachers, for even the students rose their voices from worry.
"In addition, the pairs and who each pair will be up against have already been decided. These were determined at my discretion based on various factors, including style, grades, and interpersonal relationships, so here they are: First, Todoroki and Yaoyorozu are on one team, and they're fighting me," Shota lifted his scarf-thing and grinned at the two who seemed a little taken aback by his words. "Midoriya and Bakugo are a team and their opponent..." After he mentioned the two being a team, both boys whipped their heads at each other in pure shock.
Down from the sky, with the sun blaring its rays, landed All Might in his red and blue glory; kneeled on one knee as dust stirred from his rough impact. "I... Will do it!" Slowly the big man rose, lifting a clenched fist and revealing his unfaltering grin. Astonishment was an understatement at this point, the two boys he stared at repeated his name as if he came out of a nightmare. "Work together to beat me, you two!" There he watched the two give each other another glance, which seemed to have made him let out a faint humph; no one knew what went on in his head when he looked away to ponder.
"And now, we'll announce the rest of the teams and teachers they'll be up against, all at once!" Nezu was next to speak, with his paw lifting to the side and gaining their attention.
It was indeed, really fast. Kirishima and Satou against Cementos. Asui and Fumikage against Ectoplasm. Iida and Ojiro versus Power Loader. Momo and Todoroki fighting Aizawa. Ochaco and Aoyama versus Thirteen. Mina and Denki against Nezu. Kyouka and Kouji fighting Present Mic. Mezou and Tooru versus Snipe. Mineta and Sero against Midnight. Bakugo and Midoriya fighting All Might. Lastly...
"Wait! Hold on!" Everyone stopped, moved their heads behind the 1-A students, and saw Hatsume sprinting in their direction. She was geared up, dressed with gadgets of all kinds, and her teacher followed behind. However, behind her teacher, a few scientists rolled a large, metal platform across the ground that seemed to be carrying the dark red sphere from before. "Saito! Why didn't you text me?! I asked you to!" Finally, the pinky caught up and pumped a fist with a beaming grin that nearly blinded a few pairs of eyes.
"H- Hatsume?! S- Sorry, I forgot! Um..." Her blue hues twinkled with awe at the sight of Kage who was still deactivated. "When-- do I..." UV-Ray trailed off and stepped a bit closer to her partner.
"Right now! Come on, hurry up and sync yourself to him!" Quickly, Hatsume pushed her from behind and made the redhead's feet scoot across the pavement. Frantic but cute sounds of unease fell from her upper black lips all the while. "We don't have a lot of time!" Now, her feet raced around the dumbfounded cybergirl and grabbed her hand. Roughly placed, her pale palm was pressed against its eye with the use of the pinky's, making it light up with a bright red color. "Yes! It worked, hahaha!" She cheered, danced, and laughed at her success.
"What's going on?" Uviel questioned and stared upon the sphere that suddenly came to life. The sounds of an engine roaring to life, smooth and clean, indicated its machinery working.
"You'll see!" Her fists were both pressed against her chest excitedly and glued her yellow eyes to Kage.
An inch or two, away from the large platform, the round robot hovered and glowed its piercing red color. Many lines pulsated slowly all over its spherical body, as its single round eye the size of Uviel's head or bigger remained focused on her. "Hello, mistress. How may I address you, starting now?" A soft hum could be heard from its hovering form, which meant it had a magnetic force. His voice was deep, clear, and joyous.
"Uh... Just..." Saito had to think of something, quickly, and it couldn't be her real name. If her real name is used while she's wearing her costume then what would be the point of her hero name? "Tectonic! Just call me, Tectonic, it's my hero name," answered the redhead, rather rushed and hesitant but certain.
"Very well, Tectonic! I will forever be in your service! I can make for an excellent ride or flight, too!" Cheerful he was, as his large spherical body inched closer to her tiny frame.
"Okay!" A delighted smile graced her lips, she was absolutely happy that she had her own little pet... Or maybe, possibly more than a pet, he may even end up being a great friend. Her tiny hand was placed just above his gleaming eye until Nezu spoke up.
"Ah, yes! What excellent timing indeed! Now-- Saito!" As Nezu approached the two girls with both paws against his back, he continued and smiled. "Edgeshot, your previous internship, volunteered to be your opponent during your practical exams. Although, he will not be in the same location as the others. Seeing as you've obtained such an interesting piece of machinery there, it was explained to me yesterday through a letter of what he's capable of. Her teacher informed me that it'd be best to test the robot out in a more open field, so your fight with Edgeshot will be less crowded. And wishes to see its potential, combined with both of your skills; since it is a part of you now it can be used in this exam," Explained the small, white creature whose beady eyes bore into stunned blue ones.
"W- Wait a minute, I don't even know how to use-" Before the redhead could even finish her sentence, Mei butted in and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"Don't worry, Saito! I have it all right here!" Around her backside, she revealed a gaming controller and a synchronizing USB chip that looked like it could fit in a computer's slot. "Just put this chip into one of your USB slots somewhere and use the controller to make him move when he's in his giant form!" Her grin stretched from cheek to cheek, pushed the objects into her hands, and turned to face her teacher. "We have a separate playing field!" A fist raised from her cheer, unaware of the confused stares from the 1-A students.
Only a few students in her class had huge stars in their eyes and gazed upon the awesome sphere Uviel was given. "So cool! I wished I had one!" Denki dramatically, and comically grew watery streams from his starry eyes.
Again, how is Kage legal?! Astonishment shone in her gaze after pondering on Nezu's words. When she saw the Principal turn to face the students, his grin failed to fall, and couldn't help but hear his next speech.
"The time limit for the exam is thirty minutes! Your objective is either to put these handcuffs on the teacher or, to have one of you escape from the stage!" Handcuffs were eventually lifted into the air for everyone to see while his small feet wandered back over to the rest of the teachers. When he heard Mina's question about the escape, part, he simply gave the girl a thumbs up and replied with a 'Yup!'
"But it'll be different from the combat training!" Present Mic spoke up with DJ Record movements from his hands. "You'll be up against someone waaaaay better than you!" he exclaimed, just to earn a sassy remark from Jirou, and of course, he scolded her for it.
"This time, your exam will be very similar to a real battle. Please, think of us as villains," Demanded Thirteen, as she placed her hand against her puffy outfitted chest.
"Assuming you come across the enemy, if you think you can win a fight against them then, that's fine. However..." Sniper began and trailed off, only for Aizawa to pick up after him.
"In cases where there's too big a difference in your abilities, it would be smarter to run away and get help. Todoroki, Iida, Mioriya, I'm sure you understand this well," He explained, just for an outburst from All Might to occur whose arms spread out wide.
"That's right! Your decision-making skills are being tested! But with these rules, you're probably thinking the only choice is to run, right? That's why we had the support course make these for us!" From his pocket, he pulled out a brace that Present Mic announced with an 'Ultra compressed Weights!' comment. "We'll put on about half our body weight; it's to give you a handicap. It's old-fashioned, but it makes it hard to move and eats up stamina!" After he put them on, his strong arm was nearly yanked down and inaudible mumbles came from his lips soon after. "By the way, there was a competition to decide on the design and we ended up using young Hatsume's!" From there, after he pointed to the said girl, the conversation continued for a bit longer and everyone began to talk.
As time passed, Aizawa's words echoed through the air and demanded everyone to start in a specific order, on a prepared stage. Sato and Kirishima were the first ones to begin, as ordered by their teacher. "Those waiting their turn can watch the exams or think of strategies as a team. Do what you want... That's all," After saying that, while the other teachers headed inside, he turned to catch up to them and left the students alone.
"Um, M- Mr. Aizawa?" Upon hearing Saito call his name, real quick the teacher glanced over his shoulder with a faint, questioning hum. Uviel's small hand patted Kage before she stepped closer, curious about something that lingered in her mind. "Where... Is Edgeshot?" She couldn't find him among the teachers, so it was assumed that he was just a tad late.
"Ah... Well, he's already inside. He's been waiting in there doing...whatever," His thumb jerked toward the building and continued after the other teachers.
"Uviel! He looks so cool!" Kirishima burst with energy, it was irresistible to sprint over to the girl and jump in front of her. His fists tightly clenched closely to his chest, his broad smile exposing those sharp teeth, and his eyes were full of excitement.
"T- Thanks," mumbled UV-Ray, who only avoided his eyes and blushed. A swift flash of earlier when their noses nearly touched, came back to her and instantly made her cheeks burn like hellfire. "I- I have to discuss strategies with Hatsume!" As fast as she could, she dashed towards the pinky and left a very confused boy behind.
His grin fell and worry filled his eyes, it was unlike her to just run away from him like that. That was, until, he too recalled that moment from earlier. Those cheeks lit up and his palms slapped against them to try and shove the thoughts to the back of his mind. He couldn't help it though, they were so close... Her soft lips, those beautiful eyes that stared with awe and were full of wonder. The smell of lavender wafted through his nose from her clothing, which he assumed was from her laundry soap or dryer sheets. Snap out of it, Eijiro! A harsh slap to his face came when he tried to come back to his senses. I have an exam to finish, I can't let that distract me! A newfound determination made his eyes narrow and prayed that the moment from earlier wouldn't cost him his exam; so, quickly, he rushed back to his partner.
While everyone conversed, Saito and Hatsume did as well. They lingered around the pinky's teacher and chilled, planning before their fight with Kamihara. Uviel had sat on top of Kage as he hovered an inch above the ground, her legs crossed and her blue pondering hues viewed the sky.
Voices of her classmates all murmured as they left to go inside, so the two girls chose to do the same. They believed coming up with plans would be better to do in there, than out in the street.
Surprisingly, after they went in they did come up with a plan and it was a good one. Considering how Edgeshot trained her during their internship and taught her ways of being a hero, she knew a bit about the way he fights. His quirk, his speed, especially when she watched him fight Serpentine before.
~~~
There, in a small lobby, sat Uviel across from Hatsume who sipped at her drink and hummed to herself. Her thoughts ran around like chickens and was unaware that her idol hero stood right behind her with his arms crossed. "Hatsume, why are you humming?" Her quiet words only made the girl giggle and grin. It was then, that Saito saw her finger point right over her shoulder, and when she peeked behind her--
"Ah-!" She fell out of her seat and tumbled to the hard floor with a comical thud. All she could hear was a light chuckle from Kamihara, which in turn embarrassed her to no end.
"I see-- Even with these weights on, I'm still stealthy," There Edgeshot stood, in all of his awesome ninja-glory, and watched her grumble adorably between the two seats. "Do you not remember what I taught you, during your training?" Calmly questioned the ninja.
"Yes... Keep my guard risen and my mind sharp," Saito's mumble came out through her groan, and seconds after, so did a sigh. Deep down she was internally squealing over her idol, to have him volunteer to help with her exam was exciting yet terrifying. He's scary-strong and is one of the top 10 heroes, so she couldn't help it.
he knew she idolized him, his gray eyes watched her stand and noticed a small hint of awe in her gaze. When his attention moved over to the hovering sphere next to her seat, he couldn't help his ever-growing curiosity and lifted a finger to poke it.
"T- That's Kage, he'll be joining us. He's literally, a part of me now," Uviel felt awkward about telling him that tiny bit and looked away in hopes of hiding it.
"Alright. It's relieving to know Principal Nezu appointed us a separate location for your part of the exam. I heard from him just yesterday, that the robot can become much larger so I understand why. He didn't want the location for everyone's practical exam to get demolished by his mass," When he viewed the cybergirl, his hand stretched out and patted her head as if she were some silly kid.
This only gave him an embarrassed pout in return, thus causing him to feel his lips curl up behind his mask. "I shall take my leave now. Do what you must to prepare before our fight. We'll be waiting for a long time since each fight is thirty minutes. Ah yes, don't forget to do some stretches before it," When he trekked and gave her a subtle wave of his hand, her upper black lips opened to speak.
"Good luck, too..." her shyly spoken words reached his ears. With that, she watched him give her a peek from over his shoulder and give her a contemplative stare. "Because-- I won't hold back. I'll use everything you taught me in that short amount of time, so... I want you to fight with all you have, too," Her now, determined eyes, bore into slightly astonished ones that soon returned to their narrowed state.
A simple nod was what she received and a chuckle that he thought, wasn't heard. Saito couldn't help but do the same, her attention remained on his backside which became smaller from the growing distance.
You'll need all the luck you can get, Saito. Came Kamihara's thoughts before several streams of red made him disappear, thanks to his quirk.
