Chapter 28: Targeted
That kid, he's got guts for sticking his nose into that Hitman's business. What, does he like her or somethin'? It pisses me off- That bald asshole's going to feel my rage the next time we meet. I don't care what people may think of me! Villain or not, I'm not as low as to hurt or kill kids! growled the Crocodile man who sat at the bottom of a river. Thoughts of Tadami swarmed his mind with a spiral of hatred and rage, his crossed legs curled up a little more during so.
Those large biceps tightly flexed from the evident anger as he remained there with folded arms; his piercing, yellow eyes couldn't help but squint from it. First thing's first! Find his daughter and protect her from the likes of the League. She didn't want to join, so why the hell are they forcing her?! Once more, he pondered, until, a large fish swam in his direction and tried to move out of the way.
With a strong grip from his hand, the fish was caught just before it got to get around his large form. An effortless movement was all it took, for it to die, his sharp teeth ripped the head of it off and made blood fill a small portion of the water. The bones in his mouth couldn't be heard when they crunched, his chews looked as natural as a Crocodile snatching prey with its jaws.
At that moment, a collection of his memories ran through his mind as he chewed on the fish's severed head.
~~~Flashback~~~
"Help, a villain!" a man screamed, as his thick boots stomped when he raced down the sidewalk. Clad in formal attire, the man had run from Wani who was carrying groceries with both of his hands.
The long, Crocodile tail flailed slightly at the sight when he saw the stranger pointing at him, as he sprinted. Those yellow hues blinked confusedly before they looked down to see the man's wallet half-open. "Oi, you dropped your wallet!" His natural Crock smirk frowned when his gaze widened. So, quickly, he moved one set of groceries into another hand to pick it up and chased after the stranger.
He hoped he'd catch up to him, losing your wallet was losing a lot of your information to anyone around willing to grab it. He didn't want that, his kind heart only pushed him into chasing down the stranger as he weaved through screaming citizens. "Sir!" he tried to get the man's attention, as he jumped over crates and crowds of people with his inhuman strength.
Everyone gasped at the sight of how high he leaped, however, the sound of police sirens wailed as their flashing lights flashed in their approach. He didn't understand what was going on, so all Wani did was try to corner the man.
It didn't seem to work, though. The stranger turned around and whipped his gun out, he shook like a leaf as he watched the hulking beast that towered over him at 6'8 feet, gradually come closer.
"S- Stay where you are!" Fearful human eyes bore into astonished Crock ones, he never expected to see Wani lift his hand to reveal the wallet. "Y- You stole my wallet! I knew it! I knew you were evil! Just that look on your face and that weird grin! I knew it!" As quick as his fingers could, the trigger was pulled and a bullet shot Wani's shoulder.
Not even a wince, the Crocodile man just stood there irritably. A faint clench of his fist around the wallet was enough to show his anger, however, all he did was simply chuck the wallet at the man's feet and growl. "Moron... I'm just handing you your wallet," his quiet, but grumbling voice, reached the stranger before he turned to head back the way he came.
"Halt, you're under arrest!" Countless police soon surrounded the Crock with guns loaded to fire, they all hid behind their police cars and some used their doors for shields. A quick roll of his eyes was all they received before they saw him casually walk away, with a shake of his head. "WE SAID HALT!" one of the policemen screamed out with fury and pulled his trigger.
It scratched at his neck when it zipped by, which only angered the Crock more to the point of sending off a warning growl. "Buzz off, already! I didn't do shit!" With his spout of anger lacing his words, a lift of his foot was all it took to kick a police car and send it flying over them. As if time slowed down, they all watched as it gradually flipped around in the air; its crushed nose left pieces of metal and debris leave a trail in its path.
As soon as time picked back up, the car landed and rolled countless times before it crashed into a nearby streetlamp. From the force, it tipped over and almost hit a nearby citizen, which only seemed to infuriate the police more.
Wani flinched and his heart panicked from worry when he had almost wounded an innocent person. Therefore, after one of the policemen commanded them to fire, bullets flew when he sprinted for one of those cars.
A harsh stomp of his foot on top of a car crushed it in before he jumped high into the air, however, he never expected a hero to show up. "Stop now, villain! Or face the consequences!" A strong voice boomed from the air, an unknown hero had flown after the Crock with a whirling whip in their hand and tossed it at him.
"What's wrong with you people?!" Through a growling voice, his fury filled everyone's ears. When he was about to land, that very whip wrapped around him, everything was truly wracking up his nerves to the point of violence.
Just when he was about to get reeled in like a fish on a hook, his strong hands gripped the whip and yanked the hero down. Close, they were, enough for him to grab a hold of their face and monstrously chuck them into the street. He held back, of course, but it still made a large crack in the pavement and a cloud of dirt to float.
As soon as he landed back on his feet, he checked his groceries and sighed in relief after he noticed no harm was done. With one look over his shoulder, Wani watched as the dust cleared to reveal a...dead hero. By a fraction, his eyes widened, before he fast-walked away to leave the scene in time so no one could find him. By the time the citizens took notice of the dead hero, the Crocodile man was already gone and they all shrieked in fear.
Those yellow eyes filled with shock by only a fraction, stared straight as he sauntered into a nearby alleyway. All I wanted to do, was give that man the wallet that he dropped. In his mind, he pondered, albeit furious that it turned out the way it did, but he hid away until the heat of the event died down.
~~~End of flashback~~~
The sound of a man's voice talking on his phone snapped the Crocodile out of his thoughts. His eyes peered into their peripherals to check and the urge to eat weighed heavily on his mind, he was hungry. Hardly any fish swam around in the river for as long as he sat there; so, like any hungry Crocodile who's not welcome anywhere, there he goes.
Instincts kicked in, across the bottom of the river he swam and soon crawled his way up the side of the bank. His scaly hand dug into the dirt as he rose from the water's surface, allowing only his predatory eyes to size up his prey.
His vest, skin, and camo cargo pants camouflaged him well enough for him not to be seen. Quiet, like a Crock sneaking up on its prey with silent feet, he watched the man talk on his phone angrily and turn his back to him.
It was so quick, that his green hand covered the man's mouth before he had a chance to scream and pulled him under like a deer, who was captured by a pair of strong jaws. A large splash echoed all around and more splashes made the water rise, until, it calmed down. Crimson eventually showed itself as it masked a lot of the water around him. It never showed him devouring the man, only blood could be seen and the phone nearby.
The phone was broken, the screen on it cracked and the back of it busted upon impact on the hard sidewalk. Wani was lucky that no one was around, lest he'd have to face heroes and more police. All because he had to listen to his instincts to eat, considering the lack of welcome he had from people. So eating at a restaurant or a cafe was out of the question, there was no real way to fill his stomach.
Sometime later, he swam away from the blood-polluted water and crawled over the bank of the river from the other side. Just ahead of him laid the cloak that he usually wore around citizens, it sat beneath a healthy tree full of leaves and shadow.
I'm glad water washes everything out, blood stains everything. I'm surprised my clothes aren't. The Crock pondered, for a moment, before he picked up the cloak and swooped it around his shoulders, using its hood to hide his head.
It flowed gently behind him as he walked with confident steps, those yellow eyes ignored on-looking citizens he passed by as his attention remained on the task at hand; find Haru and save her from her dad. That kid's no match for that bald bastard, I'm the only one who has a chance of staying alive against him. Since my quirk can mirror someone's damage, if that snake fatally wounds me he'll get the same damage. as he thought to himself, he picked something up in his vision that made him halt in his steps. To be frank, I don't know if that applies to ranged attackers too. Never tried. Wait... Who the hell is that? For a moment, he could've sworn he saw silver hair flail behind someone as they walked around a building. It made his brow rise by a fraction before he turned and continued.
"Hah, I never activated my quirk around those policemen, I gotta test it out. I can't believe I lost my chance!" Wani mumbled before raising his voice and curling his natural Crock grin into a frown.
Hold up, now. That redhead, Haru's friend... his monologue filled with recognition, echoed, as his eyes widened with the same realization. That baldy's going to try and kill her, I can't believe I forgot! He's too clever to not know who all Haru hangs around! Damn it! I gotta find that kid before it's too late! With rushed feet, his heavy boots stomped across the pavement of the walkway as fast as they could, and tried his best to make it to U.A.
~~~Haru~~~
Footfalls could be heard in the brunette's ears as they came closer, she could tell by the scent that it was her father. With a movement of her lowered head, it lifted when her father stopped in front of her and dropped a pile of clothes onto her lap.
"I brought you your costume. I can't have any evidence of you being at the school now, I already hired a hacker to delete your files in their computers. I just came by to give you those and to inform you of that- Now, I got other matters to take care of. I can't have any witnesses of our secret," with anger lacing his voice, Tadami was about to leave when he halted upon hearing Haru's question.
"How'd you find my costume? I hid it away somewhere special!" Shocked, her blind eyes lit up with it as she stared straight and allowed her mouth to part.
"You underestimate me, Haru! Don't forget, I'm the one who taught you everything you know! So, I know exactly where you go, who you're with, and where you hide!" fury rose inside when he yelled. With a harsh grip of his hand around her jaw, he yanked her head up to look into his eyes and scowled deeply. "Your scent can't be hidden from me..." a grave tone in his voice made beads of sweat trickle down her tan skin.
After he let go and straightened up, he adjusted his suit to fix his tie. "Hold on-- by witnesses... And when you said who I'm with, you don't mean--" When recognition and fear showed on her face, his voice boomed abruptly.
"Saito and Hitoshi must be killed to protect our secret! At least, if I get rid of them, nothing will hold you back from becoming a villain. You're at war with your blood! Accept who you are, already!" his hand rose when his anger did, his temptation to slap her grew stronger, and when he was about to do so--
A pale hand behind him harshly grasped his wrist and kept him from it. Despite seeing her face scrunch up and prepare for the hit, his desire to do so was hard to fight off. However, the force of the hand made his eyes move to see who it belonged to.
It was none other than the leader of the league himself, with that gloved hand adorned on his face. "I don't care what your personal lives are like, but keep the violence to yourselves when you're in my hideout. You're disturbing our meeting with your anger, so shut up," his red eyes bore into black ones for the longest time, until, Tadami looked at his daughter again.
With a huff of hot air, his anger dwindled just enough to take control of himself, and yanked his wrist from Tomura's hand. "I have important matters to attend to, I don't have time to scold her now," Within a blink of an eye, he disappeared, and the only sign of him ever being there was the door that remained open a crack.
"Hey, can I help her put on that costume?! I want to see what it looks like! By the sounds of it, Yukimura made it herself when she said she hid it. I want to see!" The same girl Haru smelled before, could be heard hopping out of her seat. Her small feet patted across the floor with light taps and the vibrations she felt grew closer to the leader.
"Just make sure she doesn't try to escape, I'll leave her to you since you're the only girl here right now," Tomura's voice rang through the brunette's ears as the sound of his feet scuffed across the floor. It was strange, he didn't know why he stopped Tadami from smacking her. When he saw her face scrunch up like that, something pushed him to stop the Hitman, and couldn't figure out why.
As he left the room and entered a hallway, his hand rose so he could stare at its palm. Confusion, and anger, all mixed at that moment the more he thought about it. "When I touched her face, her skin was so smooth... Soft, and delicate, but she can thicken it with her snake hide? Why did I act that way when he was about to hit her? I normally wouldn't care... What other reason would it be, if not for disturbing our meeting?" Tomura mumbled, to no one in particular and continued to ponder on the matter.
Haru was eventually set free so she could walk. There were several escorts surrounding her as she followed the cheery girl in front of her, the brunette could feel the girl's steps pause every couple of seconds as though she were skipping along the hall. The smell of decay with a mix of cologne filled her nose as she passed the leader; their eyes met when she did and a stiffening movement from the man could be felt.
"Yo, what's up?! You act like you saw a ghost, haha!" A bright, beaming grin replaced her frown when her head faced Shigaraki. The snake girl could hear his heart thumping loudly in her ears from the temporary closeness, it was odd to her. Haru didn't understand why his pulse increased but pushed the thought aside for now.
His intimidating, red gaze, widened just a fraction before returning their usual squint and watched as she wandered down the hall with a few of his league members. The light on her face that lacked any fear, the carefree look she had, and how positive her vibes were, astonished him as with how much she could hide behind a mask.
It almost seemed beautiful in a way, to him. However, what she said before when she first arrived, still lingered in his mind like a hanging cobweb. "Have to keep a positive attitude, huh? She's got guts for facing danger like that, being carefree can only get you so far..." Tomura noted to himself after they were out of sight and pressed his back against the wall.
Time passed and it wasn't long until the brunette came around the corner of the hall. Of course, he wasn't there anymore, Shigaraki sat on one of the bar stools in front of the misty man clad in a bartender's outfit. The dark, misty member of the league poured Tomura a drink into his glass full of ice and soon stashed it away for later. "You look troubled, what's wrong?" When he asked, he began to shine one of the glasses from under the counter and waited.
"That girl. She's different, I've never met anyone that hides behind a happy mask like her, it's strange," When Shigaraki took a sip of his drink after answering, all he received was a light chuckle from the member.
"Who isn't strange, these days? I admire her positive attitude though; it beats the depression and stress floating around in here every day. Her being here seemed to have already lightened up the atmosphere," With a fold of his arms, the bartender replied with a sigh from his hidden lips. Everything was quiet, it was nice, but the stress came back into the room once she left.
Tomura had nothing to say after that, just thoughts of her in his mind were left to linger, until, a cheerful voice brought life into the room. "She looks so cool! She really is snake-like!" the blonde girl from before ran into the center of the room and did a short, dramatic twirl with a point of her finger directed to the hall. Both Tomura and the bartender looked at the entrance, just to have their gazes widen a little at the outfit Haru wore.
(Here's her outfit xD! I did my best to make it look unique, my first unique-looking trench coat lol! XD)
In she walked, clad in a yellow trench coat that had its bottom in, what looked like, a ton of ties shaping it out to look like a rattle from a snake. A baggy hood with small white horns, on either side of her head, hid a white, eyeless mask that shined like plastic. However, the trench coat looked like it was styled to only hold itself around her torso, whether than over her arms. Two, wide, and long strips in the front made an X over her chest while, thin, brown strips underneath held it together.
More brown strips dangled over her arms and across her chest, behind the trench coat; it was connected to the white sleeveless, short, shirt. Another set of similar strips trailed down her shirt and over her stomach, separating at the end into two parts. Baggy yellow pants were held up by brown, tight, elastic around her waist, and no sign of shoes could be seen.
On her forearms, though, was a type of thin material that almost blended in with her skin. A much darker tan than her complexion showed artificial scales that shined under the dim light of their hideout. White, sharp, claws on the odd scaly gloves added to her snake appearance, and unbeknownst to everyone, the same material, if not- thicker covered her bare feet. Her dagger was hidden beneath her trench coat and its sheathe was attached to her lower back so no one could see it.
All Tomura could see of her was that wide grin of hers and her snake fangs protruding from her lips. Those shiny, natural scales on her shoulders and cheeks, never went unnoticed by the members. "She told me that she wanted her hero name to be Horned Viper when I helped put her costume on. I think it sounds fitting with her outfit!" A simple clap of her hands, echoed when she clasped them next to her grinning face.
"It's cool though, isn't it?! Doesn't it match?!" Excitement beamed on, what could be seen of Haru's face after she did a dramatic twirl of her own.
"Toga, you're too noisy," Shigaraki stared in awe, at her outfit, but snapped to their usual strictness when he scolded the blonde. "Now, I want to begin the sessions soon," he added. Confusion settled in when Haru paused to stare, with a slightly gaping mouth.
"Dude, if you're gonna torture me and stuff, I'm not doing shit," A fold of her arms showed how adamant she was, and didn't even notice the creeping grin that replaced her frown. A moment, hardly noticed by the other members except Toga, who blinked with interest. If he does, then I'll pay him back in full.~ that very whisper in her mind, the dark side of her began to show itself briefly.
"You're doing it again. What are you thinking, right now?" With a tilt of her head, the blond questioned after her finger touched her lip.
Tomura's red eyes moved to their peripherals and watched the snake girl snap out of her dark thoughts with a gasp. Her eerie grin fell after she realized what she had done, she couldn't stop herself from taking a step back. Everyone's attention was on her again, it bugged her to no end to know that they noticed her change in expressions, each time.
