Chapter 52: Fire Fighting Fashion

"First off, the gloves." Engitech continues typing and you hear a ping come from another corner of the room. "Got 'em."

He stands up and walks towards the sound of the noise. He returns holding a pair of bright red gloves.

"Got so much stuff down here it's hard to keep track of it all, so I just put trackers in everything."

"It doubles as security in case anyone wants to try nabbing anything, too." Fire Tamer says. "Thankfully we don't really need to worry about that, especially down here. We're keeping the trackers in your gloves just in case we get separated during patrol."

"That makes sense, but what about my helmet? Can't you track me from that?"

"That, too. The trackers in Engi's work are his own invention, though. They're more reliable than the one in your helmet. More resistant to jammers, too."

"Wow, how does your quirk work anyways?" You ask Engitech.

"My quirk lets me come up with some pretty complex designs. It works best with building and making blueprints for things. Figuring out the best layout, materials, you name it. Doesn't help with the making as you can see." He holds up his hands. "I figure I get myself at least once everytime I make something."

"That sounds so useful!" It kind of reminds me of this one kids movie... What was it called? They had all of the builders... It was a toy of some kind... Everything was made of bricks...

"Enough chit chat, try them on!" Engitech tosses the gloves at you, and you manage to catch them.

They're tougher than they look. They flare out a little after the wrist, but only about an inch or so. You slip them on and flex your hands.

"They fit well?" Engitech asks.

"Perfectly! Like they were made for me!"

"They were."

"Oh, right!"

"Try blasting the wall over there in water."

You look where he's pointing and get ready before pausing.

"I think this material is too thick for the water to go through." You say.

"Just do it."

You do as you're told and blast a shot of water. Instead of the gloves flying off or filling with water like you expected, they stay perfectly in place. The palms of the gloves open to a sparsely woven fibre, and the water has no delay getting through. The parts that had covered your palms hide around the rest of your hands. As soon as the water stops, the gloves return to normal as the padding folds back down.

"Told you." Engitech says. "Now, try the other two."

A similar thing happens, except that when you produce steam, they seem to cool, and the opposite occurs for ice. You notice that the materials left covering your palms looks different for all three.

"Pretty cool, huh?"

"Pretty awesome! So, the gloves can detect water and temperature?"

"Yes. If you touch an object you can also read the temperature. We'll use it to see if doors are safe to open in fires." Fire Tamer explains. "They'll also help protect your hands from your steam and ice.

"These are really cool...!"

"Depending on how you do this week, you can keep 'em. Just have to show Rin you're taking this seriously." Engitech says. "We'll remove the trackers, of course."

"This makes me want to do even better than my best!"

"I like that spirit! Now, let's get your uniform properly picked out." Fire Tamer says.

She walks over to a large closet in the adjacent wall and it's filled with fire fighting uniforms. After a moment of shuffling she takes one out.

"Here it is." She hands you the uniform, and you see your name on the hanger. "Throw it on over your clothes and see how that fits compared to the one you wore earlier."

The uniforms are black with neon yellow reflective stripes on it. The inside matches your new gloves, and there are also red patches over the elbows and knees. On the back, there is a matching 'STUDENT' written across it in red, just like your shirt.

You put it on and it fits perfectly. Unlike the one earlier that was your size, this one had been tailored to your measurements.

"It's perfect!"

"Good. Now let's see you move around in it." Fire Tamer says. "Try to hit me, without your quirk!"

"Got it!" You ready yourself, and raise your fists. The jacket is a bit awkward to move in, not to mention the weight of the whole uniform. Rushing at Fire Tamer, you attempt to hit her on her side.

"Too slow!" She dodges easily, but you follow, swinging at her again. You can't even touch her. Trying to catch her off guard, you raise your leg to kick the side of her hip.

"Crap!" The length of your jacket prevents you from raising your leg far enough, and you stumble. Fire Tamer laughs as she steps back.

"Definitely a smart idea to shorten it."

After a few minutes without much luck you finally manage to land a blow on her arm. When you do, Fire Tamer smiles and stops you.

"Good job, kid. You might have struggled to move, but it was a lot better than most beginners."

"Jeez, I need to work on my physical strength more..." You say.

"Good thing we have a gym here! Now, Engi, did you get enough info on how to update it?"

"Should be good. Leave the uniform here on my desk, and I'll have it fixed for the morning. We'll put it with the rest of the morning crew uniforms."

Wiping the sweat from your brow you remove the jacket. "Yuck, I already made it stink!"

"Don't worry kid, you'll be nose blind to it by the end of the week." Engitech laughs.

You hand him the uniform and thank him for his help.

"No worries. Rin, you better let this kid go to bed now, or she won't be up for breakfast."

"I guess I should. Let's head up." Fire Tamer leads you back to the elevator, and the doors close behind you.
