Chapter 49: Diving Right In
"Your internships start in a week. Those of you who were drafted will receive personalized lists to choose from. Everyone else will be getting a list of 40 hero agencies who are accepting interns. This is an important decision, so choose wisely. Submit your choices to me by this weekend."
"We only have two days to pick?!"
"Then you'd better start thinking!" Midnight says.
You look down at the list Aizawa hands you. It was a big stack of paper all stapled together. Agencies covered both sides of the paper, and it was giving you a headache just thinking about going through them all.
Over the next two days, you thought hard about where you want to go. You end up deciding on the Tokyo Fire Fighting Hero Agency led by the pro hero Fire Tamer. She's a hero who specialises in fire rescues, and has the ability to generate various fire suppressants, making her the perfect fire fighter.
Finally, it's time to head off to your internships. Everyone makes their way to the train station together.
"Has everyone got their costumes? Remember, wearing them in public when you're not with your pro is strictly prohibited, and make sure you don't lose them!" Everyone nods, and Aizawa continues. "Now go, be on your best behaviour!"
"Bye Sir! See you in a week!"
"I still can't believe you didn't go to the Pussy Cats!" Kaminari says.
"I've already trained a ton with them, though. Plus I can train with them whenever I want. I can't exactly train with Japan's number one firefighting heroes everyday!"
"Yeah, good point." He says.
"Oh! My train should be here any minute! I'd better hurry!" You quickly say your goodbyes to your classmates and head off.
After riding via bullet train, you find yourself in the heart of Tokyo. The city is bustling with noise, and everyone is in a hurry to be somewhere.
"Let's see..." You look at the directions on your phone. "The agency should be just a few blocks away..."
As you reach the agency, fire trucks fly out of the building past you with their sirens blasting.
"Hey, you! You're Y/n, right?" A woman jogs out. Although her costume was almost exactly the same as a regular firefighter, you recognized her immediately.
"Yes! Did something happen, Fire Tamer?"
She takes off her helmet to reveal a soot covered face. "Something's always happening in Tokyo, kid. Now, bathroom's to the left of the doors as soon as you go in. Throw on your costume and leave your things at the front desk! We've got a job to do!"
"Right!"
You quickly change into your hero costume and run to meet Fire Tamer outside. It's a good thing I ate earlier!
"Good! Here at my agency, timing is everything! If you aren't fast enough, you get left behind! Now hurry up! Let's go take that fire down!"
She runs over to a motorcycle on the side of the road. It had charred lines in it from previous missions, but looked like a sturdy machine.
You hop on behind her and she hands you a small button like object.
"What's this?"
"Put it on the back of your helmet and press the button. It's a portable helmet."
You gasp as a helmet unfolds perfectly against your costume helmet.
"Better get used to the tech. We've got some of the best in Japan thanks to my sidekick, Engitech. Now hold on!"
The motorcycle revs before hurtling forward into traffic. She easily navigates her way through the lanes, siren blaring.
You hear her voice come through your helmet's radio function.
"The helmet I gave you automatically connects to the one it's put on top of. This way, we can talk while we drive. Here's the report: An apartment building a few blocks away is on fire. According to witness reports, there was a villain meet up, and a fight ensued. My team's dealing with them now, so we're going to focus on putting out the fire. Is your costume made to withstand fire?"
"No, I didn't think about adding that..."
"Doesn't matter. Underneath you on your right there's a lifted square. Press on it and it'll open up a compartment. It's got a protective suit in it that'll unfold and fit over your costume perfectly. We'll get more gear when we catch the trucks."
"Is it safe while we're driving?"
"Perfectly."
Fire Tamer takes a sharp turn, and weaves her way amongst the cars, as you fumble for the suit. Or at least, what would be a suit. It was a hexagon about the size of your palm.
"Stick it to your chest." Fire Tamer says.
You do as instructed, and the suit activates. Nothing really seems to happen, except a thin clear layer spreads over your costume.
"What is this?"
"Cool isn't it? It's like a force field. Engitech's quirk allows him to create anything he can map out. It's straight out of a sci-fi movie! Though, it's not fireproof, but it will protect your clothes from lighting up. Now get ready! The fire's up ahead! You can feel the heat, can't you? Look at the smoke! What can you tell me about it?"
"It's... Black?"
"Exactly! Typically, the darker the smoke is, the more volatile the fire! And Y/n, I only have three rules for you! Don't be an idiot! Don't get killed! And don't eat someone else's leftovers!"
"R-right!"
"When we're in the field, you take care of moving citizens and putting out fires outside. My team and I take care of everything involving the building and villains, got it? And make sure you know what kind of fire it is before you spray water on it! The only fires you can put out with water are Class A fires! This is wood, trash, paper, and other such substances! Anything else and you'll only make the fire worse! The helmet will help you recognize the fire type and recommend a suppressant!"
You take another sharp turn and a wave of heat crashes into you. The apartment building was practically a wall of flames. A crowd of civilians stand in the street as the heroes work. A police van was already there, with a hero helping load villains in.
"Hey, Kai! Give me an update!"
"Sure thing, FT! All of the residents got out fine. Only one person has some burns and that's because he went back for his cat. The fire's raging pretty bad."
"Were any other animals left in the building?"
"Sal got all of the animals out except for a little girl's fish. They're in a huge tank, and Aki's still injured so we don't have anyone who can move the water."
"I can get it!"
"I don't know... This is your first day... Well, first ten minutes really."
"Please! They may just be fish, but if we have the option to save them, shouldn't we take it?"
"I like your attitude kid! So long as the structure of the building is sound enough. Kai, what's your opinion? Is it safe? What apartment are the fish in?"
"389. I say there's another seven minutes before the beams give way, thanks to the crew's help."
Fire Tamer quickly attaches a mask to your helmet along with some other things to help you breathe and stay safe. She throws a jacket at you after you do up the pants over your costume.
"Alright! Let's go save some fish!"
You follow Fire Tamer as she races into the building. She blasts the fires back with a fire suppressant, and you follow her carefully.
How does she run so fast with a full uniform on? That equipment must weight a hundred pounds!
The two of you quickly reach the apartment, and she holds a device to the door before kicking it down.
"Why'd you kick it?"
"Temperature read that there wasn't a fire on the other side, but still not a temperature I'd want my glove on."
The two of you make your way across the burning room to where a giant fish tank was. Fire Tamer makes her way to a window and yanks it open.
"I need a ladder up here to get Y/N out!" She says over her radio. She turns to you. "Once they get the ladder up here you're going to grab the fish, and hop on. Got it?"
"Yes, Fire Tamer!"
"And call me FT, everyone on my crew does!"
"Yes, FT!" You race to the window and freeze around it. You were only on the third floor, so it wasn't that far down. After the crew on the ground raises a ladder to the window, you race back to the tank and open the top.
There must have been a dozen or more fish in the tank. Nothing big, thankfully. However, as you began moving the water you realized it was fresh water, not salt. I have to be really careful! If I lose this water I'm in trouble... I can't just generate more or I might kill them...
"Alright fishies, I'm going to need your help here... I'm going to get you out of here safe and sound, so don't try to leave the water or anything!" You quietly say to the fish. It was more an unconscious mumble to yourself. Afterall, it's not like the fish would understand.
FT works on putting out the fire as you carefully take the water and fish out of the tank. One by one the fish all swim in front of you in their giant bubble of water.
"You two have another two minutes and thirty-six seconds before the beams give." Kai's voice says over the radio.
"I've got them all!"
"Great! Let's get out of here now!"
You bring the water containing the fish out of the window before stepping out yourself. The ladder lowers you to the bottom in no time and you head towards the crowd of civilians. FT follows after you.
"My fish!" A little girl ducks under the caution tape and begins speaking to them all. "They were so scared! Thank you so much, miss!"
"Of course! Now I've just got to find somewhere to put them..."
"Here!" Kai comes jogging towards you with a large bucket. It was just big enough to fit the fish in.
"Oh no! They're saying the water is too hot!" The little girl says.
"Can you speak to them?" You ask.
"Yes! My quirk only lets me talk to fish, but they're wonderful to talk to!"
"What temperature is their tank normally at?"
"Chloe! There you are!" Her father comes to a halt in front of you. "Thank you so much for getting her fish. I don't know what would have happened if she lost them."
You smile and Chloe tells you the temperature. It was thankfully a temperature you had practice with.
After you finish, you turn back towards the building. FT was still working on putting out the fire with the help of her sidekicks and crew. The fire trucks were pumping fire suppressant on the building.
Kai smiles at you. "This is what we'll be doing for most of the week, Y/n. I'm the one who's usually in charge of making sure civilians are okay and handling information. My quirk allows me to track events and the exact times they happened. I can remember who, what, when, and where perfectly."
"Woah! You're like a walking timeline!"
Kai laughs at your description. "I guess you could say that. Now, we've got to bring everyone to a safe place. Help me with loading everyone on to the bus. Remember, these people just lost their homes, so don't act out."
"Yes, sir!"
