Chapter 20: Interesting Information in the Infirmary

Most of the time, the halls of UA were so crowded and loud, your footsteps might as well have been silent. However, today they seemed to be the only noise you could hear. The empty halls were silent, and even the birds outside were quiet. After the villain attack earlier, it's no wonder everyone left in such a hurry. The building seemed like a different place after hours. The golden light filtering through the windows found its way into your eyes, and you held a hand up to block it.

After wandering the halls for a few minutes, you finally found the infirmary. The door was slightly ajar, and you could hear voices drifting out from inside. As you walked closer, the voices became more clear.

". . . surprised to see you're okay with him seeing you like this." Hm?

"Ah, young Midoriya knows quite a bit more than just this." That voice sounded like All Might's, but it sounded a little off.

"Why's that? Wait, you didn't..."

"He's my successor. I'm getting too weak. That's the reason I came to UA in the first place. I just happened to find Midoriya a lot quicker than I thought I would have."

Wait, successor? Midoriya is All Might's successor? What does that even mean? I shouldn't be eavesdropping, but I need to give All Might the video-

"I still can't control his quirk... I wasn't born with one, and my body isn't used to it yet. Every time I try to use it I end up breaking my bones..." You hear Midoriya say.

What?! All Might gave his quirk to Midoriya?! How does that even happen?! That doesn't seem possible! In your surprise, you drop the USB stick. Panicking, you bend down, and catch it before it can make a sound. Unfortunately, you were standing so close to the door that you hit your head off of it, and knock it open with a bang.

"Ouch..." You mumble.

"Y/n!" Midoriya says in shock.

"Young Y/n?! Crap, how long have you been standing there?"

"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to eavesdrop! The detective asked me to deliver this to you to give to him, but oh he's right here... But I came to find you, and I figured you were still in the infirmary and when I got here the door wasn't fully closed and I seriously didn't mean to overhear your conversation! I promise I won't tell anyone!" You could feel your face go bright red, and you stare down at the floor in shame.

"Well this certainly isn't good..." All Might sighs.

"I appreciate you bringing the USB to us, Y/n, but this is a bit of a mess..." Detective Tsukauchi beckons you to come in and you shut the door once inside. "You understand you can tell absolutely no one what you learned today, right?"

"Yes sir! I promise I won't tell a soul!" He nods at your response.

"Well, she's not lying, so that's a good sign." He says to All Might.

"What do you mean?" You ask him.

"My quirk makes me pretty much a walking lie detector."

"Young Y/n, you must keep what you overheard today a secret. Only a small number of trusted people know the true nature of my quirk, and if it got out that it could be transferred, villains everywhere would target Midoriya. You can't tell family, friends, or even write it down in a journal."

"I understand. I'm really sorry that I overheard..."

"It's my fault... I should have been more cautious before blabbering about having his quirk..." Midoriya says.

"We should all have been more careful." All Might shakes his head. "Y/n, you must continue acting as though this conversation never happened."

You nod your head. "Can I ask one thing though?"

"Go ahead."

"How did you even give Midoriya your quirk? How is that even possible?"

"Part of my quirk is the ability to pass down my quirk. It's a stockpile of power that's been growing over generations of holders."

"So was it just like bibbidi-bobbidi-boo here's my quirk? Sorry I'm just having trouble understanding how you could just give someone your quirk..."

Midoriya looks to All Might who nods at him. "I ate his hair."

"...Pardon?"

"I ate his hair."

"Sorry, it sounds like you're saying you ate his hair. Could you repeat that for me again?"

"I did say that. I ate his hair and got his quirk."

"If you don't want to tell me that's-"

"No, seriously, I ate his hair. It was gross."

"What the f-"

"I'm back! I have energy bars to get your strength back up. Oh? Who's this?"

You turn around to see Recovery Girl in the doorway.

She notices everyone's surprised looks and raises an eyebrow. "What? Am I interrupting something?"

"Ah no, thank you for the food Recovery Girl, you're a life saver." All Might smiles.

"I know I am. I just wish I wasn't turning into the daily bone mender, too." You chuckle at her jab at Midoriya. "Seriously, what am I going to do with you two?"

While she gives the two their snacks, you check your phone. You hadn't checked it since you were getting ready to leave for USJ, and had kept it on silent as well. A landslide of texts and missed calls hit you, and another call is incoming right at that moment.

"Sorry, I have to take this. I still haven't called my aunt, and judging from all of these missed calls she's worried sick."

"Good night, Young Y/n."

"Be safe heading home."

"See you on Friday, Y/n!"

"Good night!"

As you close the door you pick up your phone. "Hi Aun-"

"Y/n, oh my god thank god you're alright! We heard about the attack, and we've been so worried! Why didn't you answer any of my calls? Where are you? Are you hurt? Are all of your classmates all right?"

You tell her and the other Pussycats about USJ and make your way home. They're relieved to hear that there weren't many injuries and that everyone would be fine.

"How's Kota doing?" You ask. The other end goes silent.

"Well... He knows you're okay, but he's really mad. He's scared about what could have happened to you, and I think he's mad about you going to UA in the first place still."

"Yeah, I understand... But they were the ones who broke into the school. And it's a hard to break into place. If they were able to break into UA, then any old high school wouldn't have been a problem for them. I get that All Might wouldn't have been at any old school, but still. UA's generally a pretty safe place."

They agree, and you start to feel your body ache even more from the walking. You were almost home now, and the store was just coming into your sight. The sun was still in the sky for now, but the streetlights were starting to flicker on.

"I've gotta stop and get some bandages from the store now, but I'll call you guys later okay?" You say your goodbyes and hang up.

"Man, I should have asked Recovery Girl to help me with some of these bruises... Or is that misusing her quirk? They are just bruises..." You mumble to yourself as you make your way up to the store.

The automatic doors slide open for you, and you have to blink a few times while your eyes adjust to the florescent lights. The radio is playing a gentle song you haven't heard, and there's a quiet chatter filling the air. Not many people were in the store at this time of night, which was good for your head.

Picking up a basket, you make your way over to the first aid section. Tensor bandage, tensor bandage... Aha! Spotting the right kind, you pick up a box, and turn to look for some ibuprofen. The shelves looked organized and freshly restocked, so you found the medicine fairly easily.

At the cash register there were magazines, candy bars, drinks, and the daily newspaper. On the cover was a big picture of a new hero titled, "Debuting hero saves an entire family from a collapsing bridge!"

It'd be nice if my debut makes the front page...

"You're trying to be a hero, huh kid?" The old man standing behind you in line smiles at you. "I recognize that uniform. You go to UA, right? Shame what happened today... You know any of the kids who got attacked?"

You nod at him. "It was my class. Thankfully everyone's going to be alright. We wouldn't have gotten out of there if it weren't for the pros."

"Yeah... Heroes are really something. I wanted to be a hero when I was a kid, but didn't quite want to put all of the hard work into it. You look pretty tough, though."

"I like to think I am." You chuckle. "I've been training for a few years." He smiles and you excuse yourself to pay for your items.

When you get outside, the sun has fully set. There are a few clouds, but the stars are twinkling bright. You smile as you remember looking up at the sky from where you lived with the Pussycats, and head home once more.
