171: Tummy Aches for Everyone
“That's enough.” Aizawa steps forward, his hair standing on end.
“Ah...! Sorry, sir!! I wasn't thinking!”
Aizawa sighs. “You know better than to use your palms. Anyways, I know you won't give up until Togata completely knocks you out, so I'm stopping it here. The old lady would kill me if I sent you to her unconscious on your first day back.”
“Aw, man!! But she was doing so well!” Kirishima complains. “She could have beaten him!”
“No, she couldn't have.” Aizawa sighs. Your classmates give you a closer look, and they see just how out of breath you are. Now that the fighting is over, you have to struggle not to vomit from the pain in your stomach. Losing your internal battle, you freeze a bucket out of the water you're sitting in and spill the contents of your stomach into it.
“Oh god that hurt...!!” You groan. A few metres away, Mirio has pulled his pants on. It's a miracle you didn't see his junk.
“Whoops, guess I hit you a little harder than I meant to!” He laughs as you vomit again.
“Midoriya, get her some water, would you?” Aizawa instructs.
“Isn't there enough...?” Mineta grumbles at the water covering the ground as Midoriya nods to Aizawa, and Momo quickly makes him a cloth and bucket for you. Midoriya thanks her, and he grabs your water bottle for you.
Mirio walks over to you and offers you his hand. “Great work there!” He grins. You go to accept it, but the pain shoots through you again, and you puke once more.
Midoriya jogs over with the items and kneels beside you. “Here, let me help...” He pats your back as you finish puking, and he offers the cloth to you to wipe your face.
“Thanks, Midoriya...” You groan. Once your face is fine, you pull some water from your bottle to rinse your mouth with. Then, you freeze the ice bucket over so nothing spills and place it in the bucket Momo made. “God, my arms are aching...!”
Mirio and Midoriya help pull you up and wrap an arm around your waist each. They bring you back to the rest of the class, and Aizawa has you sit down. “Y/n, before we discuss everything, want to deal with this pond you made?”
“Yes, sir...” With a grunt, you pull all of the water together and freeze it into a big lump of ice. “Can I put it outside when we leave? My arms are killing me...”
“Why don't you just turn it into steam?” Mina asks.
“If I turn it into steam, it'll get hotter in here. If that happens, I'm puking again.” You groan as you hold your stomach while sitting on the ground.
“So, what's your quirk anyways?” Kirishima asks Mirio as he pats your head.
“It's Permeation! When I activate my quirk across my entire body, I pass through anything and everything. And that includes the ground itself!! Like you guys guessed, warping is another function of it, and Y/n got it spot on! I fall straight through the Earth!! But when I deactivate my quirk, something amazing happens. Multiple objects can't occupy the same space at once, so one of them gets repelled. That means I get launched out of the ground instantaneously! That's the secret behind my warping. I can control the angle via my orientation and pose, so I basically choose where I get shot out!”
Mina puffs her cheeks out in annoyance. “It sounds like a glitch in a video game to me.”
Mirio loses it laughing at her pout and comment. “You could say that!!”
“Attacks pass right through you, and you can change position instantly. Guess it's a strong quirk after all...” Tsuyu holds a finger to her chin, and Midoriya is taking rapid air notes.
“Not quite. More like... I made it into a strong quirk. When it's active, my lungs can't absorb oxygen. Because even when I breathe, the air just passes through me. Similarly, my eardrums can't pick up on vibrations, and my eyes can't absorb any light. It all just passes through me, and I can't feel anything at all. That said, my body still has mass, so all I have is this sensation of falling endlessly.”
Everyone looks at Mirio in surprise. “Jeez... That sounds awful...”
“See what I'm saying? Think about trying to pass through a single wall: I have to activate it over my whole body except one leg. Then I release it on the other leg and touch down. And finally, I have to activate it on the first leg to pass all the way through. So even a simple act like that is quite the involved process.” Mirio continues his explanation.
“I bet I'd screw up a lot if I was in a rush...” Kaminari says.
Mineta nods. “And not being able to feel anything...? I'd freeze up...”
“I used to take my sweet time, just to be safe. I'd hold back until the last second and end up falling anyway. Then my clothes would fall off. But time was the one thing I didn't have if I wanted to make it to the top with my quirk!! I had to predict faster than my surroundings could change! Foresight was essential if I wanted to trick time itself, and experience was the only way to get good at predicting. Experience fosters that sort of mental ability.”
“You can all see how Y/n’s ability to read her opponents improved over just a few days with our Number Two.” Aizawa says, and your classmates nod.
“I've taken up a lot of your time, but this is why we had to fight! Because experience teaches more than words ever could!! During our work studies, we weren't just guests, but genuine sidekicks! We were treated like pros, and let me tell you: it was terrifying! We dealt with life and death situations. But scary or not, painful or not, it was the sort of top-notch experience you can't get from school alone. I turned my work study experience into power that's allowing me to reach for the stars!! Which is why, even if you're scared, I wholeheartedly recommend it to you first years!!”
Mirio finishes his speech, and everyone claps for him. “He even talks like a pro...!” Ojiro says.
“‘Guests,’ huh? It did feel that way during our internships...” Kaminari says.
“They never let us try anything dangerous, but Y/n...” Jiro looks at you still sitting on the ground. “She did all kinds of dangerous things with Hawks.”
“Yeah, people were talking online about how even his real sidekicks aren't able to keep up with him, but she could...” Uraraka nods.
“Even I was often left behind with his sidekicks...” Tokoyami sighs.
“Y/n, you have anything to say?” Aizawa asks you.
“Yeah...! When I get stronger, I want a rematch!!” You point up at Mirio from the ground, who laughs as you still clutch your stomach in pain.
“You bet!!!”
“I meant about your work study.” Aizawa sighs in annoyance. “What helped you in your fight against Togata?”
“Well... The most obvious advantages were my flying move and my water sensing. We spent a lot of time training at Hawks' agency between patrols. He was also teaching me stuff about weak points and how to defend them. Hawks really likes multitasking, so he was teaching me that stuff and going over my homework whenever we sparred or trained. Combine all that with how fast I had to move to keep up with Hawks, I was able to follow Togata way more than I would have three days ago.” You groan as you stand up. “Though, if it weren't for the rain, I don't think I would have lasted more than a few seconds thanks to my hands and feet...”
Aizawa nods. “Alright, everyone, it's time to head back now.” Everyone shouts a thank you to the Big Three and shuffles out of the gym.
Midoriya and Kirishima offer to help you, and you graciously accept. They wrap their arms around your waist, and you sling an arm over each of their shoulders. As you pull the ice out of the doors with you, Hado taps Amajiki’s shoulder. “Hey, why'd we even come to this? You got any idea??”
“Be grateful to Mirio that we got to just sit back.” He replies.
“Say, can I fight you two sometime??” You ask the pair. Hado gives you a big grin, and Amajiki shakes his head.
“Why would you want to do that...?!” He groans.
“Because you two are crazy strong, too!! Right??” You smile. “I know you're shy, but I wanna see what makes you one of the Big Three!!”
“You bet!!!” Hado cheers. “I wanna know everything about your quirk!”
Amajiki grabs onto Hado’s sleeve and frowns. “Is she making fun of me...?”
You and the two boys can't help but be surprised by his comment. “No way!! The opposite! It's a compliment!” You wave. “I mean it!”
Amajiki avoids your gaze as he cowers behind Hado. It's funny to watch considering he's taller than her. “If you say so...”
