Prologue

As the cats crouched beside the crystal sacred pool, they murmured, "She has to make up her mind. She can't be like this all day.' A blue she-cat meowed. "I know, but we have to wait." A pale ginger she-cat replied. "I hope my kits are doing well." The dark ginger said nervously, her green eyes glowing and longing and love. "You know that they are doing fine every time." A light brown tabby reassured. "But," the dark ginger continued. "When will we ever meet up again?" Her voice was tight with emotion and pain. The pale ginger she-cat ran her tail along her kit's back. "I know what the feeling is like." She soothed. "But don't worry."

The blue she-cat gave a graceful leap, then headed towards the open clearing. "Firestar has two lives left," she meowed. The brown tabby sighed. The blue she-cat continued, "he gave up all, all of his lives to defend his Clan. He never changed." The cats relaxed for a little while, then the tabby decided, "We need to make a message to tell her." "You know we can't just guide all of their pawsteps." The pale ginger meowed. "Leafpool, Squirrelflight, I know it's a hard time, but believe me, ThunderClan will be fine." The blue she-cat yowled, "ThunderClan StarClan cats gather!" A group of cats sat together. "What is it Bluestar?" An orange broad tom asked. "Sunstar," Bluestar dipped her head respectfully towards her old mentor and leader. "We need to make a message. For ThunderClan." Mosskit squeaked, "To who? And why?" Squirrelflight gazed at the little kit with love in her eyes. "We need to make a message for Bluewhisker." She told the little kit gently. Mosskit widened her eyes.

Bluestar narrowed her eyes. "We must guide them. Well, at least this time. I've had enough." She meowed darkly. "ThunderClan will fall if it goes on like this." Pinestar shook his pelt. "But shouldn't we watch them more first?" He asked. Murmurs of approval and protest broke through the group of cats. A gray she-cat grunted, "So what are we waiting for? Let's make the message." The tip of her tail twitched impatiently.  Bluestar mused, "Seems like your loyalty is always in ThunderClan, Yellowfang." Yellowfang snorted.

Sandstorm meowed, "What about-" "I know!" Thrushpelt interrupted. Bluestar thought for a while and nodded. Thrushpelt meowed, "What about 'The blue flames must not waver.' this message?" Cats yowled their approvals. Bluestar mused, "Yes, that will do..." "Then it's decided." Featherwhisker called. "Meeting dismissed." Bluestar flicked her tail to dismiss the cats.

Bluestar dipped her nose to the water. "Jayfeather," She dipped her head to the medicine cat. "Is there a message?" Jayfeather asked. "Yes," Bluestar's eyes grew round and her face more serious. "The blue flames must not waver..." "Wait!" Jayfeather called as the stars swirled and darkness edged his vision. "Tell me what it means!" Bluestar whispered once more, but Jayfeather had already opened his eyes to darkness.
