Introduction:
As soon as we got to the fairgrounds, Mama told Dick and I that Gotham was a dangerous city to be,and that we should never ever leave the safety of the circus. I listened to her. I didn't really like Gotham in the first place. It was a depressing place to live. The streets were covered with homeless people and drug addicts. It wasn't uncommon to see a dead body. No one ever wore a smile, and the all the buildings were so old that a few of them looked like they were going to fall down in a minite's notice. I sure hated Gotham. Dick on the other hand, was looking forward to the visit. He had heard about the great Batman who protected the streets of Gotham from evil, the Dark Knight, the world's greatest detective, and the greatest hero ever. I wasn't so sure. How could someone be such a great hero if he couldn't even protect his city properly? But I didn't want to ruin it for my big brother. He had been counting down for days till the circus went to the city of his hero. Tati joked that when Dick finally saw Batman, he would never want to leave. I hoped that this was not true. I just wanted to get out of Gotham as soon as possible. It was a scary place. As i lay awake in my bunk under Dick, I could hear the police sirens and the occasional gunshot. Dick was fast asleep, but that was no surprise. He could sleep through anything. The hard part was waking him up. One time he slept and slept and slept till one of the clowns had to pour ice cold water on him. It was funny. Suddenly i heard thunder. Kaboom! I glanced at the clock. 1 in the morning. Gee if Mami knew how late i was staying up she would have my hide. I turned off my flashlight and tried to sleep. I eventually did, but kept tossing and turning. I had a feeling something bad was going to happen the next day but didn't know what.
