Ch 21

Five months had passed since everything happened, Gabriel was put in jail for murder and so was Tomoe for attackingus and attempt on Emilys life. Emily filed for a divorce and raised Adrien as a single mother with the help of Natile who decided to stop working for Gabriel and worked as Emily’s secretary as she went back into acting.

I was in school after taking a week off and Alya was brought back to school as well. She has to leave some days early for therapist appointments. We all always ate in a silent group at lunch and walked to and from school together, after what had happened to us, it was what was most comforting.

“Um, hey guys?” I turned to my group as we left the school. “I’ll meet you all at the library later, there's just somewhere I need to go first.”

“Okay” Nino said and the other agreed with him.

“See you later.” Adrien said kissing my forehead, reluctant to let go of my hand.

“I’ll be fine.” I wave them off, untangling my hand. “Tell my uncle I’ll be there later.” they nodded. After the battle, my mom reached out to my uncle and I found out he was the librarian of my favorite library, we just never recognized each other.

I watched them walk away chatting and took out my phone to call a cab. It arrived after a while.

“The cemetery please.” I told the driver. Once there, I paid and got out.

“Thank you.” I waved. I stepped back and took a deep breath before walking through the gates, I’ve been putting this off for too long but now, I feel ready. I walked through rows and rows of gravestones before I came to the one I was looking for.

It was troubling having to ignore all the ghosts mulling around here, but for the most part, they didn’t pay me any attention.

“Hello? Who are you?” I turned to see a ghost walking towards me. “What are you doing at my grave?”

“Kagami?” I asked.

“Yes, that’s me, and you are?”

“It’s me, your cousin, Marinette.” her eyes widened.

“You’ve changed. You seem powerful now.”

“Yeah, that’s a long story.”

“Well, not that I don’t mind the visit, what are you doing here?”

“I, um, I want to bring you back to life if you’d like.” I offered. “I really want to get to know you and I think you deserve to live out your life longer.

She pondered over my words. “No.”

“Pardon?”

“There's nothing for me in life. My father died when I was young and I can leave the graveyard, I’ve seen the news, my mother is in jail, she murdered people. I don’t want to have to live with that. While I do agree, my time was cut too short, I don’t want to go back, too much has changed and it would be best for me to stay where I am.”

“Oh.” I looked at my feet in disappointment.

“But, you can help me in a way. You’re death, right? If you could escort me to the otherside, I’d love to catch up on the way.” She gave a comforting smile.

“I’d like that.” I had figured out my powers a while ago and I held out my hand to her. A portal formed in front of us and I took a step in leading her.

While we walked, we talked about the many things we did with our life and beyond that.

“There's my dad, your uncle.” She pointed into the distance.

“Well let’s go meet him.” My eyes started misting. I let go of her hand and she approached her dad, throwing her arms around him. I wanted to join in the reunion but it was about time I started heading back.

“I’ll see you on the other side.” I whispered to myself.

I made it back and called a cab to bring me to my friends.

The library smelled like fresh croissants and old books. After we reached out, they thought it would be good to put a mini cafe upfront to draw in more customers. Because of the increase of customers, we decided to renovate the basement by ourselves as a meet up place. That ment we also got to fix the ladder which I was more than grateful for.

“Hey everyone!” I called coming down.

“What took you so long! I had to keep Nino and Adrien from eating all the cookies for you. It was hard work!” I laughed and settled into a pillow covered chair. The room now had the spell books in a far corner with the desk and the rest of the room was covered in fuzzy carpet and furniture. We got rid of the candles because I’ve been having a hard time with fire, it’s alright, it just brings up painful memories and it’s nicer for everyone if their gone. Insead, we decorated the room with way too many lanterns and fairy lights to illuminate the space.

“So, any more souls today or last night?” Chloe asked, I had filled them in with everything, they deserved to know the whole truth. I was afraid that would weird them out but I clearly had overestimated what would weird them out after everything that’s happened, they also were okay and not horrified with the veins which had spread all over my body, the only place they didn’t get to was my face so I suppose I couldn’t be too mad at them.

“A couple, I went to Rome for one of them so that was fun. I did meet another death when we had to collect double souls so that was cool I guess, they were american and we were in Alberta I think. Any what, for the majority of the souls I was around here and in other cities around France per usual”

“I’m proud of you.” Adrien commented coming over to sit by me. It was a big chair so I scooted over and he sat beside me, his arm wrapping around my shoulder like how Nino and Alya were, they were official now and me and Adrien had yet to really say anything ourselves regarding our relationship but I think everyone knew anyways.

“Geez guys, you all really have to rub it in.” Chloe teased. While going over and checking her answer on her math homework.

“Oh!” Chloe looked up remembering something. “My moms coming early, yeah she’s bringing an intern, but still. She lands soon.”

“That’s great! I’m so happy for you!” I congratulated.

“Thanks, I’m kinda nervous to see her again, it’s been so long.”

“We can come with you, but you can talk to her alone.” Alya suggested.

“Would you please?” Chloe pleaded.

“Yeah, of course.” Nino agreed. Me and Adrien nodded.

“Thank you all.” She breathed a sigh of relief.

It was soon sunset and we were all standing with Chloe in the lobby of her hotel. There were reporters gathered at the front door, waiting to see the designer and her apprentice. A sleek black limo pulled up and a tall woman stepped out with a young girl around our age. They stopped for a few questions and pictures before entering.

“Mom!” Chloe cried, rushing up to meet her.

“Who? Oh, Camille, right?”

“Chloe-.”

“Nice to see you, now if you’ll excuse me, I need to  tend to my apprentice.”

“But, it’s been almost 3 years now, don’t you want to see me?” Chloe attempted to put on a smile but I could see she was cracking inside.

“You should catch up with your daughter.” Her apprentice suggested, motioning to Chloe.

“But we have much more important matters to attend to Amelia.” She tried to usher her away.

“Well if you won’t I will.” She dodged Chloe’s mother and came over.

“Hi, Chloe, was it?”

“Mhm.” she nodded, shyly. Shamed by her mother.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Amelia.” she held out her hand and Chloe shook it. “Are those your friends?” she glanced over Chloe’s shoulder at us. Chloe led her over.

“This is Marinette, Adrien, Alya, and Nino.” she introduced us.

“It’s nice to meet you all, I really want to try and make friends here.”

“Well, welcome then, it’s nice to meet you as well.” Alya grinned.
