chapter one ━━━ mystic falls new resident
Lyanna drove past the "Welcome to Mystic Falls" sign, a flicker of excitement sparking within her. It had been years since she'd seen the Salvatore brothers, who felt more like siblings than friends. Officially, she went by Mikaelson, but here, her alias was Salvatore—a necessary precaution to keep her true family at bay. No matter how resourceful the Hybrid was, she always managed to stay one step ahead of him. Lyanna prided herself on her cunning, a trait she and Klaus shared, though she considered herself far more calculated, much like Elijah.
Her past wasn't something she shared easily, not even with Damon or Stefan. Only three people knew the full extent of her history: Katherine, and, of course, the Salvatores.
Mystic Falls wasn't part of her original plan. Her carefully constructed life as a lawyer kept her far away from familial entanglements. But when she received Damon's voicemail—a mix of snark and urgency—begging her to bring her "cute little ass" to town to help protect the doppelgänger, she knew she couldn't ignore it.
Damon had also mentioned Elijah. Just hearing his name made her stomach twist. She had avoided her family for centuries, ever since they cast her out for helping Katherine escape. But the voicemail left her with no choice. With a resigned sigh, she packed her bags and booked a flight to Mystic Falls.
The familiar chime of the Mystic Grill's door greeted her as Lyanna stepped inside. Her gaze swept the room until it landed on a dark-haired vampire perched at the bar. Smirking, she casually slid onto the stool next to him, letting her hair fall to shield her face.
"What's a gorgeous lady like you doing here?" Damon's signature smirk and flirtatious tone were unmistakable.
Lyanna couldn't suppress her laugh. "This 'gorgeous lady' happens to be your best friend and sister figure."
Damon froze, his eyes widening in shock. "Holy shit—"
Lyanna cut him off, throwing her arms around him in a hug. "And, as always, your attempts at flirting are tragically awful."
Damon grinned sheepishly. "You're actually here, Ann. I didn't think you'd show up."
"Stefan called," Lyanna explained, leaning back against the bar. "He said his girlfriend is Katherine's doppelgänger. And apparently, you've managed to piss off one of my brothers. Again."
Damon rolled his eyes but couldn't hide his grin. Having Lyanna back felt like a piece of home, something rare and comforting in his chaotic life.
"Enough about my family drama," she said, waving a hand dismissively. "What's been going on with you, Damon?"
Their conversation flowed easily, slipping back into the comfortable banter they'd always shared. Damon talked about arriving in Mystic Falls, his conflicted feelings about Elena, his misadventures in New York, and the constant push-and-pull with Stefan over their dietary choices.
Later, as they headed to her car, Lyanna felt a chill run down her spine. Someone was watching them from the shadows.
The Salvatore Boarding House exuded warmth and charm, a stark contrast to the coldness Lyanna had grown accustomed to.
"Damon, you're back," came a familiar voice with a lilting British accent.
Lyanna's eyes widened as Rose-Marie stepped into view.
"Rosie!" Lyanna squealed, rushing forward to hug her old friend.
Rose's eyes mirrored her shock. "Ann? What are you doing here? You should be halfway across the world by now!"
"Stefan called about Elijah," Lyanna said, her tone firm. "I'm an Original, and it's about time I started acting like it."
Rose studied her carefully, her expression softening. Lyanna wasn't the same person she'd last seen—a hundred years had changed her, bringing both pain and resilience.
Lyanna settled onto the sofa. "Now, spill. Start at the beginning and don't leave anything out."
Rose and Damon recounted everything—the masquerade ball, their failed attempt to kill Katherine, and Elena's kidnapping. Lyanna couldn't hold back her laughter at Damon's poor planning, much to his irritation.
Still, thoughts of Elijah lingered in her mind. Their reunion wouldn't be a warm one; that much she knew.
Later, Lyanna met Stefan at the Grill.
"Guess who finally decided to join us in Mystic Falls," she teased, approaching the table with a grin.
Stefan turned, his face breaking into a smile as he stood to hug her. "Lyanna! I'm so glad you're here."
Across from him, a blonde vampire looked up curiously.
"Hi," Lyanna said, offering a warm smile. "Lyanna Salvatore."
Caroline gasped. "Wait, you have a twin? And you didn't tell me?"
Lyanna chuckled. "Not a twin. More like a best friend and sister figure."
It didn't take long for Lyanna and Caroline to hit it off. Stefan watched in amusement, the dynamic reminding him of the way Lyanna used to banter with Lexi. But the lighthearted moment shifted when the topic turned serious.
"Caroline, what exactly did you tell him?" Stefan asked, his tone sharp.
Caroline squirmed under his gaze, mumbling something about keeping her questions to a minimum. Lyanna, sensing the tension, interjected. "I'm guessing 'him' is the werewolf?"
Stefan nodded but kept his eyes on Caroline.
"Are you mad?" Caroline asked innocently.
Stefan sighed, his tone softening. "No, Caroline. I'm just worried. You're putting yourself at risk."
Lyanna placed a hand on Caroline's arm. "Don't worry. Damon won't find out."
Caroline smiled gratefully.
As the conversation continued, Lyanna's thoughts drifted to Lexi. The memory of her old friend brought both warmth and sadness. Caroline reminded her of Lexi in so many ways—bright, stubborn, and endlessly loyal.
"You remind us of someone," Lyanna finally said, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
Caroline tilted her head, curiosity sparking in her eyes. "Who?"
Lyanna smiled softly. "A best friend. Someone who meant a lot to us."
Before she could elaborate, Stefan shifted the conversation back to Elena, and Lyanna excused herself. As she wandered toward the bathroom, she accidentally bumped into someone, nearly sending them both tumbling.
"I'm so sorry," Lyanna said, steadying the other person.
"No, it's fine," the girl replied, brushing herself off.
Lyanna looked up to meet a pair of sharp, green eyes. Something about the encounter sent a ripple of unease through her.
