I'd Run Away

...It was unjustified, but they had unfinished business.
They did everything they could in California, and in the time that they had. They walked down the coastline, holding hands. They surveyed old bookstores, and walked through countless blocks looking in the windows. The two marveled at the little things like the Chinese lamps, and the pitch black of the night, or the comfort of a perfect cup of tea. He bought her a long, lovely strand of pink seashells from a gift shop.
It was picturesque.
The only part that didn't seem quite right was how it was so unjustified.
What right did he have to run off with his childhood sweetheart, and spend days living like a rich man? He kept asking himself, never getting a real answer, but he was just trying to do what he felt was right.
The image he had of what their life together could be like was appalling, and it was strong.
That was part of the justification.
The other part of it was that, although right now it felt as if he was only benefiting himself, in this dream-like sequence, he knew that he did have to help himself in order to be good to everyone else in his life.
Meanwhile, she was perplexed about his intentions, but was too courteous to ask about anything. He was adjusting to her differences, so they were even.
Why on earth would he take off work and leave his other friends and his normal life?
Well, in reality, he didn't really have any other good friends, and he didn't care about his other life at the moment. He had unfinished business, and, indirectly, of course, he didn't want to take that to his grave.
Susan didn't care as much about his exact intentions luckily, when she realized he loved her.
