Chapter 3 || Test Day

"𝓦𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝓭𝓲𝓭 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓰𝓮𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓮𝔂𝓮𝓼 𝓼𝓸 𝓫𝓵𝓾𝓮? 𝓞𝓾𝓽 𝓸𝓯 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓴𝔂 𝓪𝓼 𝓘 𝓬𝓪𝓶𝓮 𝓽𝓱𝓻𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱."

Thunder rolled in the distance as you shifted back and forth in the roller skates Casey let you borrow. You hoped it wouldn't rain, because that would complicate things a lot more than you would like. You had dark colors on, black and grey for the most part so you wouldn't stand out even against the bright lights of New York. You would be weaving through the streets of New York, big and small, trying to keep tabs on a single car in the sea of them. It was quite the test, and you silently cursed whoever came up with it because you'd never done something like this before. Then again, there was a first time for everything.

It had been a week since Casey and April first asked you for help with cleaning the streets of thugs and other things. Ever since then, you'd been relentlessly practicing your skating every night after work and now that the weekend was here, it was time to test your skills. You were nervous, but then again it would be the first time you'd be doing something technically illegal.

"Alright (Y/N), here we have a clip on camera so we can see what you see and what you've done to catch this car. You'll be racing against Casey as a comparison of your talents, but all you have to do is keep on it's tail or keep it in sight for ten minutes and you pass." April explained as she hooked up a single small camera onto your outside clothing.

"But since we're borrowing my dad's truck, you can always just hop right into the bed of the trunk and you'd pass a lot sooner like that!" Casey pitched in as he pulled down his hockey mask.

Maybe you should have gotten a mask too. "Wait, if you guys aren't driving the truck, who is?" You asked with a raised eyebrow as you checked your materials. You had a long rope with a strong magnet attached on your side, a pocket knife just in case, and a fanny pack filled with first aid materials.

"That would be our friend - one of the ones we told you that you can't see. We thought it would be fine as long as you don't try to look into the windows - which are tinted by the way." April said as she made sure that you understood that you weren't allowed to peak inside out of curiosity.

"Alright, don't worry I get it." You nodded to her. She mentioned something about family situations last time, and it stuck with you pretty well, considering that you valued that enough to not ask about it.

April and Casey gave each other one last glance before April spoke into her phone. "We're good to go here, Donnie can you see through the cameras?" April spoke a one sided conversation that you tried your best not to listen to as you readied yourself.

Soon enough a dark blue pick up truck drove to the curbside, the windows tinted so dark that you could see nothing but your reflection. Casey slapped his hand on your back suddenly, "Ready to eat my dust, (Y/N)?" He asked with a smug grin.

You only rolled your eyes, returning with a smirk, "I think we both know I would be leaving you in the dust, not the other way around." You said as you took your place beside Casey at the starting line.

"Alright you two, the truck gets a head start of 30 seconds and then you two are off." April said as she took her timer and stood between the two of you.

"What, only 30 seconds?" You asked, your ego beginning to show.

Casey gave you a playful shove, "That's all the time he needs to leave you lost!" The two of you continued your playful banter before April blew her whistle to start.

Immediately you skated forward, sparks nearly appearing at your sudden start, and Casey followed quickly behind. Your eyes wandered for the dark blue truck, even checking for the same license plate number. Casey was still beside you as you wove in and out of the cars beside you, earning honks from angry drivers that you did your best to ignore.

"C'mon, where is it?" You muttered to yourself as you jumped and slid over the hood of some of the stoped cars to follow the flash of midnight blue out of the corner of your eyes.

Casey was beginning to pass you, despite you being much faster than him, he was more agile in these scenes, as he traveled them often. A goody-two-shoes like you had very little experience with them. You were hoping for a quick straight away to be on route so you could easily pass him up, even with several speeding cars on it.

3 minutes had passed since the beginning of the test.

The lights of New York when you passed by the busier streets would have been a beautiful sight, had you not been on a mission - there it was! There was a large opening for you to catch the vehicle, and the cars were beginning to clear a way as well. Casey was behind you, a few meters away as you sped up to the recklessly driven car.

They told you that you could bring any tools you needed to succeed, but you knew that anything too high tech would be cheating in your eyes. So you unhooked the magnet and rope from your belt, and with one good throw, it quickly attached to the back of the trunk with a loud 'clang'!

Cheering mentally, you allowed yourself to be pulled forward by the truck itself, leaving Casey in the dust as you waved goodbye to him. Suddenly, the car swerved - taking sharp left and right turns as it tried to shake you off, but you skated out of the way of incoming cars and civilians easily. Pulling yourself closer and closer to the truck as you passed into the narrower, but quieter small streets.

5 minutes had passed.

It swerved left and right, and you were beginning to lose your hold on the rope, but you were determined. Wrapping the rope onto your arm several times, you could feel the burn of it scratching against your skin as it tried to pull away. You pulled yourself closer and closer, little by little. All until your hand hovered over the back of the truck.

"BANG!" The truck drove into one of the alleyways of the small streets, causing the entire vehicle to leap and it hit your chin roughly enough to cause tears to immediately fill your eyes. You could feel the copper tang of blood in your mouth as well, and cursed whoever it was driving that if you lost any teeth and looked like Casey after this, you would see to their death personally.

7 minutes had passed.

Your grip was completely numb from the attack, but the rope was still wrapped around your arm. You lost a few meters, but by some miracle, you hadn't lost all of your balance just yet. Nearly running to keep up with the vehicle, you were angry now and the adrenaline filled your veins to the brim. The pain was nothing more but a side thought and you clawed your way up the rope even more quickly than before to prove your determination.

This time you wasted no time to place your hands onto the back of the truck and hook your entire arm against the side to solidify your position. With one last burst of energy, you let out a shout as you hauled yourself up and tumbled into the back of the car with a loud 'thud'.

9 minutes had passed.

You passed. You groaned and ached and spat out the blood from your mouth with spite - but you passed.

You were laying on your stomach in the bed of the truck as it continued to drive down the small streets, making it's way through the more beautifully lit streets to get to the rendezvous point. With a painful groan, you flipped yourself over to stare at the bright lights coming into view above you. Despite aching all over your body, you were enjoying the sights from the back of the pickup truck, and the driving had become a lot smoother as well, not as crazy and reckless as when you were chasing after it.

It took a few minutes, but the truck finally came to a stop. Struggling, you pulled yourself up from the lying position to a sitting one. You leaned against the back of the truck, even the back window was tinted, and you let a tired sigh escape your lips.

"Good job." You heard from beside your head.

You let out a surprised screech as you heard the sudden voice. "What the fuck!?" You shouted as you jolted away, only to land roughly on your back from your aching limbs.

"Oh - sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." It was a male voice, and surprisingly, the person who drove the car that basically tormented you, seemed quite worried.

With a groan, you hauled yourself back up to a sitting position, narrowing your eyes as you stared at the back window. It was cracked open, literally only enough for you to hear his voice, and see his unforgettably bright, beautifully blue eyes that seemed to glow against the dark background of the truck.

"It's fine..." You muttered back, your eyes almost entranced by his. You rubbed your bruising jaw as you remembered the blood summoning crash with the truck you had.

He hesitated for a moment when he saw your hand wander to your chin. "Umm, sorry about your mouth too - I didn't think you'd be close enough to..."

"Get my mouth smashed in by the back of the car? Yeah, me neither." Despite your bitter words, a smile began to crawl on your face, you were only teasing him.

He gave a nervous laugh, but quickly cleared his throat. "Well, we'll be waiting here for Casey and April to get back. They should be here soon enough, but in the mean time... You said you wanted to meet with us?"

You nodded, and then realized that the dim lighting may not allow him to see you. "Yeah, but is there more of you in the truck or are you just referring to yourself in the plural sense?" You almost sounded sarcastic, but you were completely serious this time.

"It's just me." He replied. "But my brothers and I work with April and Casey."

"You have brothers? How many?"

"There's four of us in total. My name's Leonardo. My brothers are Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo."

"Renascence painters huh..?" You trailed off, but continued. "You probably already know this, but my name's (Y/N) (L/N)."

"Yeah. I already know, but it's nice to officially meet you - er... kind of." He stumbled over the last of his words. "I - I mean not like we're suspicious or anything! We just uh - work with Casey and April to fight crime."

"Fight crime? Now that I think of it, April doesn't exactly seem like the type to spend so much of her time doing something like that." You subconsciously leaned forward to get a better look at him. "And you don't seem like you'd team up with someone like Casey-" Before you could continue he slammed the sliding window closed and then cracked it back open in a hurry.

"Wait! You can't look at me!.. um, sorry."

"No, no I get it. With the whole 'playing hero' thing, sometimes it's not good for others to see you. Whatever your reason is, I don't mind."

There was a long pause.

"...R-really? You don't mind?"

"Not at all, Leonardo."

You couldn't see it, but Leonardo began to smile silently to himself. For once there was someone who didn't mind knowing what he looked like, and from the sounds of it, you probably wouldn't mind that much either. Then again, Leonardo couldn't get his hopes up...

Just as the conversation was becoming awkward, Leonardo spoke up once again. "Well (Y/N), I think it's safe to say you passed."

"Yeah, about that." You began. "I hope there's nothing in the job description about getting my face smashed in again or I might have to file some complaints."

The two of you gave half-hearted laughs and continued to joke back and forth.

"Now I can't make any promises about that, but I'll be sure to listen to your complaints, and we'll help pay for hospital fees too."

That joke actually stopped you in your tracks. "W-wait, hold on, I don't want to be hospitalized or anything though - I have homework."

This caused Leonardo to burst out laughing in his own way. "Don't worry, (Y/N). You won't be doing anything too dangerous. Just placing a few trackers here and there when necessary... But in any case... It's nice to have a new addition to the team."

You sighed and gave him a smile. "It's great to be part of it." You stuck your hand through the crack of the truck window, closing your eyes and covering them with the other hand as you waited for Leonardo to shake it.

There was a long moment of hesitation, but then you felt a large warm palm shake yours.

"Welcome aboard, (Y/N)."
