The next morning in the Na house was just like any other, slow and quiet. Usually, his father worked from home. However, his new job required his attendance at the office. His mother also worked out of the house, but was not forced too. Jaemin didn't know exactly what they do for a living, but it was something along line building businesses and getting lots of money for it.
Jaemin currently was wasting his morning reading a large book he forgot he had, imaging the scenarios happening in his head. He enjoyed reading in his free time, just as long as the book was interesting.
He was in the middle of reading a sentence when he heard a thunk in his window. He knew what it was whenever another one hit it not long after the first, and closed his book. He got out of bed to walk over to the window, and opened the curtain to see none other than the boy he met last night leaning over his own window. It looked as though he was about to throw another rock. Jaemin unlocked his window, and opened it to lean out of it as well.
"Good morning!" Jeno chirps with a smile, throwing over in the corner of his room the rock he was about to throw.
"Morning." Jaemin greets back.
"What are you doing?" Jeno asks curiously, setting his chin on both his hands.
"I was reading." Jaemin admits.
"Really? You like reading? You have books of your own?" Jeno inquires, surprised at the hobby.
"Yeah, I do." Jaemin smiles a little, feeling a pride come up in his chest at the boy being so curious.
"Well, since you like reading, there's a library down the street. You wanna go together?" Jeno asks.
"Um, lemme go ask my mom real quick." Jaemin says and quickly turns around as he jolts out of his room into his mother's office space. He finds her writing down on a piece of paper in front of her laptop.
"Hey mom. Can me and a friend hang out at the library?" Jaemin asks.
"Oh, sure honey. Just be safe of your surroundings. We're not from here." His mother warns, and starts writing down something on the piece of paper again.
Jaemin nods and runs back up to his room, entering it he sees Jeno daydreaming with the birds.
"I can go!" Jaemin interrupts.
Jeno pops back from his daze and smiles as he realizes what Jaemin said.
"I'll meet you outside!" Jeno yells, and rushes to be down first.
Jaemin does the same, grabbing his shoes as he putting them on goofy. He rushes downstairs and flies out the door. Getting outside, he sees that the other boy got their first. Jeno was his height, however the boy had a smaller frame than he did. Jeno's face up close, Jaemin could see the long eyelashes and cat like eyes that disappeared when he smiled. He also pointed out a small mole beneath his left eye. Jaemin also spotted a small dark spot on his lower lip, he didn't know what it was. However, to him it looked to be maybe a bruise.
Jaemin wanted to ask Jeno something, but stayed quiet.
"Beat you!" Jeno giggles.
"Yeah, I guess you did." Jaemin smiles.
"Let's go!" Jeno starts walking the other way, and Jaemin is quick to follow behind.
They walk down the street for about 5 minutes until they come to a stop in front of a old brick building smashed between two others.
"Here it is." Jeno states, walking to the door that read 'OPEN.'
Both the boys walked into the building, the strong scent of new paper hitting their noses. Looking around, Jaemin notices all the vines in the room, so many plants it felt like a cottage they were in. He also noticed how many books there were; many shelves of them stacking and stacking, until reaching the end of the building. There were small tables here and there, some with books on them and some without. There was not many people in here, as school hasn't started back up yet. Jaemin also noticed there was only one librarian. She was a very old looking woman with white thin hair, she was pretty short and had on some brown clothing. Her reading glasses made it hard for Jaemin to see her small eyes.
The woman noticed Jaemin and Jeno right when they walked in, and started to walk over with a small smile on her wrinkled face.
"Hello Jeno, whose your little friend?" She asks softly, her voice a little cranked to Jaemins ears.
"This is Jaemin! He just moved in next door!" Jeno exclaims.
"Oh! Welcome young boy, feel free to read whatever you'd like." The woman says with a smile, and waves slowly as she walks away.
"She knows you?" Jaemin asks as they make their way to the back.
"Yeah, I come here all the time when I have nothing to do." Jeno admits.
"Do you like reading as well?" Jaemin inquires, a little excited.
"Sometimes, but really I enjoy sleeping in that spot though." Jeno says bluntly as he points towards a bean bag in the corner.
Jaemins hopes somewhat deflated hearing that, hoping he'd have a reading partner. Guess not this time either.
"So, what books do you like to read?" Jeno asks curiously.
"Anything really, but I enjoy fantasy and fiction." Jaemin answers, looking around at the tall bookshelves standing around him.
The bookshelves ended towards the wall, it was a one way in one way out. There was two bean bags sitting at the end, leaning on the wall.
"Well, this is the isle for fiction. I'm into fantasy as well, but I'll just let you read." Jeno says, taking a sit on a bean bag at the end of the bookshelf.
"What will you do?" Jaemin says with a raised eyebrow, looking over at the boy whose eyes were already closed.
"Sleep." Jeno mutters, his head already leaning down as he gets comfortable.
Jaemin realizes the boys tiredness, and nods as he observed the many books around him. There was more large books than small, which was a good move for Jaemin. He enjoyed big books, knowing it was slow burn. Either that, or it was filled with unnecessary plots and small chapters that didn't matter. He hated those type of books.
Looking up, he noticed a dark covered book, a good size for his taste. Reaching up, he grabbed the book and held it in his hands. He wiped the cover off, as there was dust on it. Opening the book onto the first page, he scans it. There was no author, and no credits. Slightly confused, he turns the book over, only to see another cover page. There was nothing at all to give information about the book, and Jaemin got curious. He's never seen such a raw book.
Walking over to where Jeno is sleeping, he sits next to the boy in the other bean bag. Opening the books he starts reading the old typing on the paper. Slowly, page after page, he loses time and track of reality as his mind gets immersed in the new founded book.
He was gradually putting the puzzle pieces together for the plot, which the theme was adulting and mentality; at least he thinks so far. It started off with a boy around his age who was going through phases of depression, a feeling of severe dejection. Jaemin had actually never felt that feeling, as he never felt low. Then again, he never paid attention to those type of things.
The book also kept mentioning another boy, who he hung out with a lot. Jaemin thought maybe it was a close friend, a childhood friend that was growing up with him. He didn't know though, there was questionable dialogue describing the other boy in the main characters eyes. Using words such as breath taking, immersing, and so on things that Jaemin would never think of another boy. He wondered why the boy was thinking such things to his friend, who seemed to be oblivious in the plot. Maybe he just wasn't understanding something, something big he couldn't piece together like the rest.
Jaemin snaps out of his thoughts as he hears a yawn beside him. Glancing over, he sees Jeno stretching and blinking like bambi.
"What time is it?" Jeno questions.
Jaemin glimpses at the clock on the other side, and the arms read '2:45.'
"It's almost 3." Jaemin answers, surprised himself that he's been reading that long.
"Oh really? How'd your book reading go?" Jeno asks, looking over to Jaemin.
"Good, I found one I like." Jaemins states.
"That's nice. You can take it with you home, Ms. Han won't mind." Jeno smiles, and then his eyes light up for a second. "Let's go to the creek!" He adds.
"The creek? All the sudden?" Jaemin inquires, confused at the sudden request.
"Yeah, why not? You've never been, it'll be fun I promise!" Jeno chimes as he gets up, almost wobbly.
"Are you sure? Isn't it too late?" Jaemin asks concerned.
"I don't think so. Come on!" Jeno says, rushing out of the library.
"Hey, wait for me!" Jaemin calls after him, hugging the book as he chases after Jeno.
They run out of the library across the street to the other side, down an empty road into the forest in front of their houses. Jaemin tries his best to keep Jeno in sight, but he admits he's not the most athletic person. He never was interested in playing sports in school, and now he regrets it.
"We're here!" Jeno yells, and Jaemin stops behind him as he leans down on his knees.
"You run fast." Jaemin pants.
"I know," Jeno laughs lightly. "Look!"
Jaemin looks up, and his eyes go wide at the sight. At first, he thought the creek was just a small rain dune down the forest, but boy was he wrong. The creek was actually a very wide stream that was flowing lightly, and the grass around it was not tall nor short. Around the grass covered large patches of flowers and weeds all different kinds. The trees were large, full of leaves as they danced around when the wind came through. The sun shines through them as well, giving the water a glimmer to its movement. If Jaemin could imagine a place in a fantasy book where somebody was in heaven, this is where he imagined.
"It's beautiful, right?" Jeno whispers beside him, and Jaemin looks over to find him smiling at him.
Jaemin didn't know why, but his heart sped up the slightest as the sunlight hit Jenos face and the wind flowed through his jet black hair. Jaemin gulps dry unknowingly as he felt this. The grip on his book tightened the slightest, and all he could do was nod in reply.
Jeno laughed lightly at the reply, leaning down as he takes off his shoes and socks.
"What are you doing?" Jaemin questions as he watches the other boy.
"What does it look like? I'm getting ready to wade!" Jeno exclaims.
"Wade?" Jaemin asks.
"Yeah! You know, get into the water!" Jeno explains. "Come on!" He adds, making his way into the water.
"I'm gonna get wet, no way!" Jaemin yells, confused at the boys actions.
"That the point Jaemin, it's fun!" Jeno calls, looking over at the awkward standing boy. "Get in with me!" Jeno yells happily.
The boy then walks over, getting close to the edge of the water. He takes out both his hands, offering them for Jaemin to take.
Jaemin bites his lip, watching Jeno stand there in the clear rushing water. He slowly takes off his shoes, setting his book down as well. Jaemin then takes a small step forward, hesitating as he glances at Jeno.
"Come on, it'll be fun!" Jeno assures. "Don't you trust me?" Jeno whispers with a small smile.
Jaemin presses his lips together at this question, and takes another step forward. He lets his hands take Jeno's, and their hands both come palm to palm as they hold together. Jaemin takes a small dip with his toe first in the cool water, and slowly lets his foot sink.
"See? Not so bad, right?" Jeno jokes, and Jaemin gives a small smile.
"I've never done something like this." The boy admits.
"Seriously? This is all I do." Jeno reports, and slowly lets go of Jaemins hands.
The loss of warmth made Jaemin ball his fist at his side, watching Jeno get farther in the middle of the creek.
"Is it deep over there?" Jaemin yells.
"Dunno, come find out!" Jeno teases, and Jaemin scoffs.
Making his way over, Jaemin notices all the little pebbles he steps on on the way. It felt weird under his bare feet, but the water felt surprisingly good. He's never stepped foot into a creek, especially in somewhere he wasn't well aware of.
"Jaemin!" Jeno calls behind him, and the boy turns around only to be met with a splash of water.
Jaemin gasp as he closes his eyes, taking the impact. Opening them, he glares over at Jeno who was giggling behind his hand. He huffs in annoyance.
"How rude." Jaemin remarks, leaning down as he splashes Jeno back.
Jeno laughs as he takes the impact as well, and splashes Jaemin back again. They repeatedly splash each other back, and it's not long before Jaemin is laughing too. They start running along the creek, trying to avoid on another's splashes. Their laughing was loud enough to be heard on the bare road beside the forest, but they didn't notice nor care.
Jaemin felt something while he was splashing water at the other boy, who was smiling days away at him. Was it adrenaline? He thought so, for this was the most fun he's had in a while. Or maybe, he thought, it was the feeling of having a friend who enjoyed his company. Maybe it was both to him.
After awhile, they both wore themselves out to the point of lying down on the bank. Panting and letting out little giggles here and there, they watched the sky turn blue to the dark hues of warm colors. Both boys were immersed in the sky and cloud, they didn't seem to care about anything else. However, Jaemin realizes how late it was getting when he started hearing crickets. He felt a point of sadness having to leave Jeno and this day behind, but he couldn't control time no matter how badly he wanted too.
"It's getting late, we should get back." Jaemin request.
"Yeah, I guess we should." Jeno whispers.
Both boys then looked over at each other at the same time after their short conversation, and made eye contact. They both let out a small giggle fit before sitting up and putting back on their shoes.
"Race you back home!" Jeno suddenly yells, and Jaemin is taken by surprise.
"No fair!" Jaemin yells at the boy who was already taking off.
He quickly grabs his book and runs after the boy who was running faster than the wind. Getting to the bare road in front of their houses, Jaemin is out of breath again.
"Beat you, again." Jeno says in a spoiled tone.
"Yeah yeah, whatever." Jaemin pants, looking at Jeno with a small smile.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" Jeno asks with puppy eyes.
"Maybe." Jaemin jokes, and Jeno huffs.
This made Jaemin satisfied with his response, and laughs light.
"Of course you will." Jaemin quickly says.
Jeno lights up in an instant, and the familiar smile returns to his lips.
"Good." Jeno states.
"Well, Goodnight." Jaemin says, and starts to walk away in the direction of his front door.
"Jaemin!" Jeno calls out from behind the boy, who turns around only to be embraced abruptly.
"I had fun today." Jeno remarks, pulling away from the hug as he waves bye, and quickly walks into his house.
Jaemin is left dumb founded for a few seconds, until he snaps out of it and head inside his own. He couldn't help but feel a burning sensation in his cheeks as well.
'Somethings definitely wrong with me.' Jaemin thinks to himself, heading upstairs to his room.
His clothes were still a bit damp, but the boy was drained as he just took them off and threw them on the floor. He set the book on his bedside table, planning to read it tomorrow as well. Getting into bed, he turns off his lamp and lets his eyes fall shut not long after darkness surrounds his room. He slowly lets his drowsiness take over, feeling his body relax.
A small smile sitting on his face as he recalls the day.
