Diary,
I'm sorry.
Well that rhymed.
I apologize for not writing in a while. Everything messed up. I think that pretty much sums how the ball went but to pacify my anger, I shall write my heart (if it even exists) out.
There you go, the worst ball ever in my life although it did have some good moments.
The setting sun was covered by the gray overcast clouds as the snow continued to float down to the earth's surface. The magnificent castle of Hogwarts stood high and as majestic as ever. Happy and bubbly voices were heard from within the majestic castle. A warm brilliant fire was burning in the fireplace of the Gryffindor common room. Harry sat there alone and deep in thoughts. He had received a news from Sirius that his mother was going to be there and so was Remus. Remus would be there to guard the castle but there was a problem with it. It was the night of the full moon and he could not disclose that piece of private information to the aurors. Dumbledore had, in fact, invited him to attend the ball as a former professor of the school but Remus declined that. He might ruin the event, that was his thought. As a compromise, Dumbledore requested Remus to at least guard the perimeters of the castle. Dumbledore believed that despite the changes that Remus would undergo physically during the full moon, he would still be the very same Professor Lupin that many students loved and admired. Harry had to agree with his headmaster on that.
As for his mum's arrival, Harry was tensed. He had no idea how she would react when she would see him at the ball. What if she tries to separate him and Ginny? What if she goes on an overprotective mood as well? Harry sighed and felt the weight shift beside him. He was suddenly side hugged. Harry sighed again as he recognized the all too well feeling of being embraced by his mother. Harry looked up into bright emerald green concerned eyes, which mirrored his.
"Sweetheart, are you okay?" Lily Potter asked. Harry nodded and hugged his mother. He could not doubt her. Whatever were to happen, let it happen and he would be done with it. His mother hugged him back then he backed away.
"Mum? It was a surprise. Sirius just told me," he said. Lily nodded, her auburn hair glistening in the soft fire light.
"I am here on your dad's request and I had to give you a set of dress robes," she said, her motherly tone elating Harry's worries. As for the new robes, he was surprised. Harry raised his eyebrows. He already had a set of green, formal dress robes. "I know, sweetheart but it is a bit old. I brought you a new one. You need to look your best if you are going with Ginny. Besides, you are a Triwizard champion."
Harry shook his head. He was completely fine with the emerald dress robes that he already owned. Also, it complimented his eyes perfectly. His mother just smiled and steered him in the direction of the boys' dorms by holding his shoulder.
The new set of dress robes that Harry's mother had brought him was black and looked extremely formal and chic. It had a gold and red lining at the end, representing the Gryffindor colours. A thought occurred to Harry's mind as he was reminded of when Ron was complaining about his lacy dress robes, the previous night. Ron was going with Hermione Granger, a girl in his class, and wanted to be dressed in his best. However, his family was a bit poor and he was given second hand robes which contained frills and laces, much to the boy's distaste. Harry took the new set of robes from his mother as he examined it. It was his size but Ron was a tad bit taller than him so he withdrew his wand and used a size modifying charm to increase it's height. As if on cue, Ron walked in, looking grumpy. Dean followed him in as well. Harry walked over to his redheaded dorm mate.
He grabbed Ron's shoulder and led him to the corner of the room, out of Dean's earshot. "Ron, I want you to have this," Harry said, thrusting the new robes into Ron's hands. Ron immediately pushed it back to Harry.
"Sorry, mate but I can't accept charity," Ron said.
"It isn't charity, Ron. I have another set of robes and I just don't want the money spent on this to go waste. Please take them Ron."
Ron looked hesitant for several minutes before accepting it with a grateful smile. "Thank you mate. How do I repay you?" Ron asked.
"Just give Hermione the night she deserves," Harry said with a grin. Ron grinned back and left for the bathroom to change just as Dean walked out of the dorm in his brown robes. Harry walked back to find his mother smiling affectionately.
Harry was about to give her the reason for giving the new set to Ron when the door opened to reveal an anxious looking Neville. He walked in and greeted Harry's mother.
"Nev dear, is something wrong? You look tensed," Lily said, gently. Neville stuttered for a few moments before looking at Harry with an apologetic face.
"I'm sorry mate. Ginny asked Parvati to tell me to tell you that err," Neville stammered. "She won't be able to go with you to the ball. She has some err. . . problem with her dress."
Harry stood on the spot, frozen. He did not know how to react. All he did was blink like an idiot. Harry's mum however was unaffected by this. She grabbed her green purse and hugged both the teens. "I'll take care of it, Harry. Get ready. Forget everything about Ginny not going with you."
As asked by his mother, Harry was pacing in the common room, fully dressed. He was wearing his emerald formal robes which had a tint of gold embroidered at the cuts and ends. His black cloak swished behind him as he paced around. Neville had already left, telling Harry that his date would be waiting for him. Neville was taking Ginny's best friend, Luna Lovegood, a fourth year Ravenclaw with him as friends on Ginny's request. It seemed that Luna was often termed as 'odd' and pushed aside by everyone. Feeling sympathetic, Neville agreed to Ginny's request on the condition that she would not go along with the boys who he would name. Ginny was asked by Michael Corner, a Ravenclaw in Harry's year; Dean Thomas, Harry's dorm mate; and finally, the 'bighead' Viktor Krum. Harry finally asked her after all these guys.
Harry was snapped out of his reverie by the sound of footsteps. He looked up to see his mother smiling at him as she walked down the stone stairs. "Careful," was all she said before leaving the common room. Before Harry could ponder the reason, his vision went black and he felt a pair of hands close his eyes behind the round glasses.
"What?!" Harry exclaimed before he was forcibly turned around. His vision became clear as the hands were removed from his eyes. He blinked, adjusting his glasses and looked at the chuckling girl in front of him. "What the hell, Ginny?!"
"Is that the first thing you would say when a girl turns up beautifully dressed for a ball?" Ginny asked. Harry turned pink and scratched his neck. Thankfully, only a few people were present in the common room.
Harry looked up at her as he observed her. She was wearing an emerald dress that touched her ankles. It was a bit low cut, but not revealing and had long sleeves that ended just above her wrist. A glimmering golden belt was wrapped around her waist and a golden star hung from her ears. Her fiery red hair was flowing down her shoulders in wavy style. Her outfit was complete with dark green low heels. Harry hoped his jaw was not hanging lose from it's fixture. Ginny wiggled her eyebrows, placing a hand on her hip.
"This is actually your mum's dress. She came to my dorm, lent me her dress and modified it's size to fit me. My dress got ripped in the end when my dorm mate, Romilda accidentally," Ginny air quoted the last word. "pushed me to the floor. It was a lovely dress. . . my mum sent it but alas!" Ginny sighed. Part of her red hair fell onto her front as she bent down, as if tired.
"You look stunning, Ginny," Harry said. He was impressed with himself to have got those words out. Ginny stood up straight and smiled.
"Mrs Potter would have looked even better! I feel bad stealing her dress from her. This dress would have brought out her green eyes and auburn hair," Ginny said, looking guilty. Harry placed a hand on her shoulder.
"She wished for you to wear it and you look nothing less," he said. He was, once again, surprising himself when he said that.
"Merlin!" Ginny exclaimed and removed his hand from her shoulder, ceasing his wrist to check the time on his wristwatch. "Harry, we need to get going," she said and pulled the dumbstruck Triwizard champion out of the common room. Nothing much was said while they walked. They came to a halt just outside the entrance to the Great Hall. The other two champions were standing there with their dates. Professor McGonagall was with them as well. As soon as they approached, she walked over to them.
"Mr Potter, I was afraid you would never turn up," she said, looking stern.
"I'm sor-" Ginny started but was interrupted.
"It's my fault, professor. I had misplaced my wristwatch and it took time to find it. I'm sorry," Harry cut her off. Professor McGonagall nodded whilst Ginny looked at him with raised his eyebrows.
"Now, let me explain the rules. The champions will enter in a proper line along with their dates. They shall first dine with the staff at the head table then proceed to start the ball. As the champions for the tournament, you are requested to start it. I request you to be on your best behavior. Have I made myself clear?" the stern deputy headmistress asked. Harry replied with a 'yes ma'am' and Ginny nodded in agreement. McGonagall gave them a rare smile. "I shall go in now. Please enter after a minute."
With that, the Transfiguration professor walked to the gigantic doors of the Great Hall, opened them with a small creak and walked in, her cloak swirling behind her. Harry turned to the other champions and found them talking to each other. Rather, Fleur, her date Roger Davis and Krum's date, a sixth year Hufflepuff girl who went by the name Clarinet Stephenson were talking to each other. Krum was approaching them and Harry tightened his grip on Ginny's hand. Ginny however did not seem to notice the events going on around her because she was looking at the decorations.
Krum approached them and cleared his throat. Harry tried his best not to glare but he did not know if he succeeded. "Good evening Vik," Ginny said. Krum smiled as Harry felt himself heat up. He pushed away the thoughts of dragon fever.
"Good evening Geeny," he said, dragging the G in his accent.
"Ginny," Harry said, emphasizing the name. "I think it is time we get ready."
Ginny raised her eyebrows as Krum nodded. "Let us 'ope we see each other soon," Krum said. Ginny nodded with a smile and he left. Ginny turned to him with a stern expression. She was about to say something when Argus Filch, the caretaker of the castle announced that they had to go in. The champions lined up, according to the descending order of age. Harry was at the end, Fleur was at the first and Krum stood in front of Harry. Ginny looked up hesitantly at Harry when the girls linked their arms with the boys. Harry nodded at her and with a reluctant speed, she linked her left arm with his right. Harry felt himself feel emotional for some reason but his reverie was interrupted when the doors that led to the Great Hall creaked opened. The sound of wood rushing against the friction caused by the floor was heard for a whole minute before the champions made their way into the hall.
The Great Hall was very beautifully decorated. Icicles hung from the ceiling instead of the usual floating candles. The floor seemed to be frozen with clear ice. Tiny white sparkles fell from the ceiling, apparently originating from gray coloured artificial clouds. The population of those attending the ball were off to the right. The tables which usually sat in the hall were not there. Instead, small coffee tables were set up for people to sit at and eat. A long row of tables, covered with white linen stood at the left. It was probably for the feast.
As soon as the three Triwizard champions and their dates entered the hall, the chattering went silent. Every single eye was on the champions walking under the spotlight. Harry felt himself sweat despite the freezing cold weather that was prevalent outside. The young competitors walked to the staff table and took the empty seats on either side of the Headmaster's seat. Dumbledore smiled and stood from his seat and walked over to the podium.
"I have eight words to say to begin the event. Let us fill ourselves to dance the night away."
Delicious food appeared on the tables. The soft clink of the spoons, forks and knives were the only sound heard along with the light chatter of the students and the staff. Most of the staff at the table were silent. Ginny was seated in between Harry and Krum. This fact alone drived Harry angry as Ginny kept talking to the Quidditch star. Half way past the meal, Harry tried eavesdropping but the only words he could make out was 'love' and 'your'. Harry was about to interrupt them when he was interrupted by Dumbledore.
"Nice tart, Harry. You must try it. I have heard that you fancy treacle tart. Correct this old man if he is wrong," the aged Headmaster said as he chewed on something. Harry tried to smile back.
"Yes sir."
"Ha. I heard it from Professor Potter. To be a son to such a father is a beautiful relationship."
Harry felt himself heat up at the mention of his father. He looked over his shoulder and found his father talking to his mother, two spaces away from him. Beside him Sirius looked up with a grin. Thankfully Dumbledore was distracted by Professor McGonagall clearing her throat.
"Enjoying the night with your lady, kid?" Sirius asked. Harry frowned.
"Look at her Sirius."
Sirius looked over Harry's shoulder and saw Ginny. Then he looked back at Harry with a sympathetic smile.
"I don't need that sympathy, Padfoot. Her date is seated beside her and she keeps chatting with someone else!" Harry whisper-shouted.
"She is a tad bit oblivious, pup."
"Not a bit, a lot!"
"Understood, understood."
Harry snorted and was about to retort when a soft chime resonated throughout the hall. Harry looked at Professor Dumbledore who stood up.
"Finally, the time has come to begin the ball!" he said. Suddenly, soft, welcoming music started playing, courtesy of a Wizarding band called 'The Weird Sisters'. They were a set of wizards who were wearing neon coloured punk clothes. Their hair was dyed in neon colours too. Professor McGonagall whispered to the champions to walk down to the dance floor as the crowd paved the way. The three champions and their dates walked down to the dance floor and the music stopped.
Ginny wrapped one of her hand around Harry's red neck and entwined the other with his hand as he gently wrapped his right hand around her midriff. He was sure to have turned red. Another soft, slow music started playing and all the three couples started waltzing. Harry was taught to dance by his mother on his father's insistence back when he was just seven. It was a pureblood tradition for the male heir of the family to learn to dance.
The music changed and Dumbledore led the Headmistress of Beauxbatons School, Madam Maxime to the dance floor. Several other staff as well as students joined them.
Harry spotted Ron dancing with Hermione, a few feet away from them. Hermione was dressed in a periwinkle gown and her hair was pulled back in an elegant bun. They seemed to be having fun. At the food table were Neville and Luna, discussing something. Harry even saw his father lead his mother to the dance floor. His father's robes were similar to the one that Harry's mother gifted him. Harry thought that it was his mother's plan to make both the father as well as the son wear matching set of robes. On the other hand, Harry's mother looked quite beautiful. She was wearing a midnight blue gown which touched the ground as she twirled in an elegant dance step. Her hair flowed past her shoulders and she too, was wearing a set of star shaped earrings. It was probably because she gave Ginny her gown. A pearl necklace hung from her neck, the one which his father had gifted her.
The change of music brought Harry back to the world. He blinked his eyes and found Ginny looking at him with concerned eyes.
"Dragon fever?" she whispered. Harry nodded, getting an excuse. Ginny sighed. "I am going to write the Charlie whether you like it or not."
"I don't want Charlie to know that!" Harry protested.
"Charlie is my brother, Harry! There will be no problem."
"If da-Professor Potter gets to know, he is bound to lock me in my dormitory and by extension my four poster bed it self!" Harry exclaimed, his voice raising with every word. He wanted to yell at her just because she brought the topic of his dad in.
Ginny shook her head and the music turned to a jazz hip hop one. Several people joined in for this as Harry pulled Ginny away from the crowd in order to get some privacy.
"Ginny, you don't understand," he said as they walked to the table where Neville and Luna sat.
"I perfectly understand everything well, thank you, Harry!" she retorted back, looking forward. Harry sighed.
"Understand what?" Neville asked. Harry looked up to find Neville standing beside him. He had apparently approached them when they were arguing. Ginny explained everything to Neville as Luna greeted Harry. Luna was dressed in a yellow sundress which was tinted with blue at the edge. Her hair was waist length and she was wearing an odd set of jewellery accessories one of which was a raddish. Harry explained everything to his best mate.
"I think there is no need to worry for that, Ginny. It's dragon fever and dragons want themselves to look magnificent and hence they leave a lasting impact on the victim but I'm sure it will reduce," Neville said. Ginny harrumphed and agreed reluctantly.
"Why don't we dance, Neville?" Luna asked. Neville nodded and the two of them left Harry and Ginny alone. Awkward silence reigned for a few minutes. Ginny was the first one to break it.
"Do you like hip hop, Harry?" she asked plainly as if they never fought a few minutes back. Harry nodded slightly, unsure of the answer. Ginny chuckled. "Come on then, let us dance!" she said and got up, pulling Harry up with her. She dragged them to the energetic dance floor and Harry found himself dancing to a fast paced electric guitar song with an enthusiastic Ginny.
The night seemed to pass by very soon until a slow song began to slow down the pace of the passing time. Harry was, by that time, pretty exhausted thanks to all the dancing he had done for the past two hours. As he and Ginny swayed around, he felt himself heat up. He assumed it was because of the dragon fever.
"Ginny, I think we should take a break," Harry said, a bit out of breath as they stopped swaying. Before Ginny could reply, another voice interrupted them.
"Geeny, may I have this dance vith you?" a heavy accent came which made Harry feel even more hot. Viktor Krum stood there, his hand extended for Ginny to take. She smiled at Harry before taking the Quidditch star's hand and leaving with him. Harry, feeling even hotter, strutted to the punch table to get a drink. He was met with Sirius there.
"Sirius!" Harry dragged the name.
"Harry!" Sirius dragged the name as well. Harry snorted. Sirius copied that action too.
"Shut up Sirius, you copy dog!" Harry scolded. Sirius barked out a laughter.
"Kid, I wanted to give this but never found the right time. Give this to your lady and ask her out. There is no night better than this for that," Sirius said, pulling a tiny box out of his robe pocket and handing it to Harry.
"I do not think that will be necessary. She's just too smitten with that bighead," Harry mumbled. Sirius made a clicking noise and the rest of the conversation was spent trying to convince Harry to ask Ginny out on a date.
That is where the 'fun' part ended, diary in this life of mine. Here is the next adventure.
"Mr Krum, may I steal my date from you now?" Harry asked as he approached the dancing pair. Viktor looked at him with a rare smile and nodded.
"Thank yuh for giving me such a vonderful night, Miss Wesley. I 'ope to see yuh soon," Krum said and kissed Ginny's palm. Ginny turned pink.
"It was a pleasure, Viktor."
With that, she linked arms with Harry and he led her away from the Great Hall. She raised her eyebrows as she realized that they were heading out to the courtyard slash grounds.
"Harry?" she asked.
"We need to talk," that was all Harry said. Their whole walk was reigned by companiable silence. As soon as they reached the grounds, Harry walked over to the lake and stood, admiring the full moon which was slowly emerging from under the gray clouds. The cold wind pinched his cheeks and he drew his robe even closer. Ginny walked over to him and stood by his side. He looked at her and found his breath catch. Even for a thirteen year old, she was extremely pretty. Her fiery red hair made curls in the wind and there was a soft glint in the pools of her brown eyes as they reflected the emerging moon's faint light. His mother's dress fit her perfectly and made her look even more pretty. Harry took a deep breath. He was going to tell her how exactly he felt. He had prayed to his luck to favour him as well.
"Ginny, I-" Harry started but unfortunately for him, luck was not on his side. A loud, wavering howl was heard followed by a scream. The two young students turned around, trying to locate the source of the scream. Harry noticed flickers of light coming from Greenhouse Two and he knew that he had to act fast. He started running to the Greenhouse in question.
He paused and looked back to find Ginny running after him, lifting her gown slightly so as to not trip. "Ginny! Don't come after me!" he shouted back to her. She stopped on her tracks, about ten feet away from him.
"What?! I am definitely not leaving you alone, Harry Potter!" she shouted back to him.
"I need you to get Sirius here soon! Go!" he shouted. Ginny made to retort but he cut her off by shouting again. "It's Remus! Only he knows what can be done, go, Ginny!" Harry shouted. Ginny nodded hesitantly and started retracing her steps in a quick sprint. Harry continued ahead, his wand pointed in front of him.
When he reached the greenhouse, he found a horrifying scene. The glasses of the greenhouse were shattered. Some plants were creeping out and a liquid was leaking from one of the plants. Harry carefully made his way around them and into the herbology lab. He looked around for a sight of any movement but found none.
"Who's there?" he asked. Shuffling was heard and Harry saw Neville emerge from below a table. Along with him was Luna. Both of them looked pretty pale. "Nev? Luna? Are you fin-" Harry started but was cut off by a loud howl.
"Harry! Behind you!" Luna shrieked. Harry turned around, the stunning spell on the tip of his tongue. A huge shadow towered over him and threatened to strangle him.
"Stupefy!" Harry shouted and a white beam of light hit the werewolf, knocking it back but not unconscious. It made to stand up again but Harry used the same spell at it, tripping it due to temporary blindness. On it's way down, it hit it's head at one of the shelves, making the whole shelf of pots to fall down on it as well as Harry who was the closest to it. Harry heard Neville and Luna shout but he was beginning to see dark black spots and he fell down to the floor, unconscious.
Wasn't that a misadventure? I would title it as Midnight Misadventure, that'd be perfect.
