CHAPTER FOURTEEN
[ 1.11 | FORMALITY ]
STANDING IN FRONT of her floor-length mirror, Daisy placed the last pin needed to keep her hair situated behind her left ear. Her mother finished brushing the last of the mascara over her lashes just a few minutes before, while she started on her simple hairstyle.
Once she was satisfied, she pulled away to turn toward Lindsay sat on her bed. "Well, how do I look?" She questioned, knowing what was to come next.
Tears already began to brim the woman's eyes, as she stood to her tennis-shoe clad feet. "Oh, honey. I was right. You look so beautiful." She exclaimed, wiping beneath her eyes.
Daisy smiled lightly and stepped forward to placed her hands on her mother's upper arms. "Mom, please don't cry. Because if you keep going, I'm gonna start crying and ruin your masterpiece."
Lindsay released a watery laugh. "You're right, you're right. This is your night to shine."
"It's just the winter formal." Daisy stated, as she lowered her arms. She then moved toward her desk where she had left her recently bought heels that matched the color of her dress.
"And you only have one winter formal." Her mother countered.
The young girl exhaled and clasped the strap around her ankle. "Okay, I guess you're right." When the shoes were secure around her feet, Daisy stood steadily on the thin heels. She strode toward her dresser and checked the time on her phone. "I have to leave in a few minutes, or I'm gonna be late picking up Isaac."
Lindsay nodded and took out her own phone from the pocket of her dark violet scrub pants. "I need some pictures first."
"Mom." Daisy groaned, but allowed her mother to drag her from her bedroom and into the adjoined living area.
"Don't mom me. I'm not going to be there when you pick up your date, and I want to remember this night." The Fulton woman stated, and positioned her daughter in the center of the room. "Now, stand there while I take your picture."
Daisy obliged and posed for the many clicks that sounded from her mother's phone. She smiled brightly for a few, and then moved forward to swipe the device to switch the camera orientation. After taking multiple selfies, the girl gathered her small clutch purse and said a quick farewell to her mother before rushing out of the home.
_______
Following the directions Isaac sent her, Daisy drove her car only two blocks over to the Lahey residence. She immediately recognized the neighborhood as the same street that Jackson lived on. Coincidentally, directly across the street from her intended destination. She parked the car next to the curb in front of the Isaac's home and waited for him to emerge. Just like he told her to.
Once the front door opened, Daisy turned off the engine and climbed out from behind the wheel. She allowed her heels to click against the asphalt, as she spotted Isaac walking down the driveway of his home. He was dressed in a black tux that appeared to be just a bit too small for his towering frame, while his light blue tie hung down to rest over his chest.
A light smile formed on Daisy's lips, as she approached the clearly nervous boy. "You clean up nice." She voiced when he made his way toward where she stood.
Isaac's steps faltered the moment his gaze fell on the girl before him. The starlit sky illuminated the street around them and her golden locks seemed to glow in the pale light. He nearly tripped over his feet, but quickly righted himself with stunned expression. "Uh, you –you do too."
Daisy continued to smile when she caught sight of the tie that mirrored the hue of her dress. "I see you found the right color."
He looked down at the long piece of fabric and then toward the girl with a light grin. "Yeah, I didn't know if you wanted me to wear it or not."
"No, no, I think its great. It looks good on you." Daisy spoke, until her words resonated in her mind. Isaac's eyes widened slightly, while she shifted her gaze to the ground clearing her throat. "A-anyway, um, I thought that you'd like to drive. You know, since I picked you up and switched the roles on this whole date thing."
The curly haired boy brows creased. "You want me to drive your car?"
"Well, it's not a Porsche or anything, but it gets the job done." She quipped, lifting her head to meet his eyes with a playful smile, "And I can't really drive well in these." She glanced down to the silver heels strapped to her feet.
Isaac released a light laugh. "Those don't look very comfortable."
"Oh, they're definitely not." Daisy stated. They fell silent for a short moment, until the girl motioned toward the car behind them. "Should we, um..."
Isaac snapped out of his slight daze and nodded. "Yeah, yeah, we should." He moved toward the passenger side of the vehicle and pulled open the door.
Daisy beamed and stepped in his direction. "Such a gentleman." She leaned down to gather the end of her flared out dress, before lowering herself in cloth seat.
When he shut the door behind her, Isaac took a deep breath and walked around the front of the car to take up his position behind the wheel. He just hoped that he would not screw that night up.
_______
Walking into the gymnasium of Beacon Hills High School, Daisy cringed at the gaudy decorations that covered the entire space. Music played through the large speakers set at the rear of the room, while a younger man stood behind what looked to be a DJ booth. The basketball court was filled with dozens of teenagers bobbing to the beat and circular tables that lined the makeshift dancefloor.
Daisy stood next to Isaac at the entrance and was not sure what to do next. She scanned the area for any sign of her friends, but the crowd was so dense that she could not spot even one of them.
"Do you wanna dance?" Isaac spoke over the booming song that sounded across the gym.
The Fulton girl's attention snapped toward the boy at her side in surprise. "You wanna dance? To this?" She motioned to the area around her, meaning the upbeat music that consumed her hearing.
He shrugged. "Isn't that what you're supposed to do at dances?"
Daisy pursed her lips in thought. "I don't really know. Never been to a dance before."
"Really?" Isaac questioned in disbelief.
"Yeah." She said, making her way toward the closest table that appeared relatively vacant. "Stiles, Scott, and I would just stay at one of our houses and order takeout and watch movies." She approached the white cloth covered surface and set her clutch next to the decorative centerpiece.
"You never wanted to go?" He inquired and took up one of the few chairs that surrounded the table.
"I mean, not really." Daisy stated and followed his lead. "From what I heard, they didn't seem like much fun. Just boring and incredibly awkward." She clasped her hands together and set them atop her knees. "Did you ever go to one?"
Isaac shook his head. "No. Didn't seem like something I'd be interested in."
The thumping song that blasted through the speakers suddenly shifted into a slower rhythm. The teenagers on the dancefloor shifted from jumping to the beat to having their arms wrapped around their respective dates.
Daisy continued to search for her friends, while she conversed with Isaac. It was not because she was not having a good time, she was. Isaac was sweet and funny and made their conversations interesting, which she personally liked in a guy. Daisy just wanted to make sure Scott's plan to infiltrate the formal without revealing himself to the chaperons. Mostly Coach Finstock.
Her distracted gaze was ultimately captured by a large form blocking the light to her left. She looked over to find Isaac standing next to her. Daisy opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by the boy's voice.
"How about that dance now?" He questioned in a hopeful tone with his right hand extended toward her.
Daisy smiled and took hold of his hand. "Sounds perfect to me." She allowed him to pull her to her feet and toward the mass of teenagers swaying in place. She turned on her heel as soon as they reached the edge of the dancefloor and immediately lifted her hands to rest on Isaac's shoulders.
The curly haired boy seemed fairly nervous, as he slowly shifted his own hands to rest on her waist. He cleared his throat and met her bright gaze. "Is, uh, is this okay?"
She nodded with a light grin. "Just make sure to tell me if I step on your toes." She joked lowly.
Isaac smiled as they begun to sway to the music. "I think you'll be fine."
"McCall! I see you! Come here, buddy. Come here. McCall!"
Daisy snapped her attention toward Coach Finstock shouting across the gym. She could hardly see the man through the mass of teenagers, as he shoved his way through the various couples. The Fulton girl shook her head when she caught a glimpse of her best friend racing away from the coach's grasp.
"I'm friends with an idiot." Daisy muttered low enough that she hoped Scott did not hear her.
"Why is he running away from Coach?" Isaac questioned curiously.
The girl sighed. "His grades. He's failing chemistry, I think, and Coach told him that he wasn't allowed to come to formal. But as you can see..."
"...He came anyway." He finished, before he asked another question. "Why does it mean so much to him that he'd want to risk Coach's wrath?"
"Your guess is as good as mine." Daisy said, "I'm pretty sure it has something to do with his girlfriend, or...ex-girlfriend now that you think about it."
Of course, she could not tell Isaac the truth. That Scott was only attending the formal to make sure that none of his friends were singled out by Peter. He was afraid that one of them would get hurt if he was not present. And to be honest, Daisy was more than worried about the prospect.
She shook the thought from her mind and forced herself to focus on the situation at hand. Daisy wanted to have a good time with Isaac and not have to worry about a murderous Alpha on the loose. That her best friend was a werewolf and that another was apart of a family that killed werewolves. She wanted to be a normal teenager for once, since the discovery of the supernatural. And that was exactly what she was going to do.
_______
Daisy and Isaac only stayed at the formal for a little over an hour and a half, before the boy had to be home. Fortunately, Peter did not make a scene in front of the entire school and Scott got to reconcile with his first love. Not to mention, Stiles actually convinced Lydia to dance with him. All and all, it was a near perfect night. At least, for a little while.
Parking the car in front of the Lahey residence, Isaac left the car running for Daisy to drive after he disappeared into his home. The Fulton girl bobbed her head to the music playing throughout the vehicle, as she massaged her sore feet. She hated heels.
Daisy opened her mouth to speak to the boy next to her, until she noticed the shocked expression across his features. The blonde followed his gaze and found a man standing on the doorstep of the home. He was nearly the same height as Isaac with the same dirty blonde curls and had a thin pair of glasses set on his nose.
"Is that your dad?" Daisy inquired, but noticed that Isaac was already scrambling through the driver's side door. She quickly followed his lead and left her heels in the floorboard. "Are you late for your curfew, because if so I'm really sorry..."
"No, no, I'm not late." Isaac reassured her, although he did not sound entirely convincing. "He just –worries when I'm out after dark." His attention remained on the man on the other side of the lawn.
Daisy's gaze narrowed, but she did not press the matter. "Okay, well, um –I'll see you on Monday then?" She voiced when he moved around the front of the car.
Isaac snapped toward the girl, and merely nodded. "Uh, yeah. I should, uh –I need to get inside."
The blonde waved him on. "No, you should go. I don't want you to get in trouble with your dad or anything." She insisted, until she faintly heard him muttered something under his breath. "What?"
He looked toward her with a shake of his head. "Nothing. I'll see you Monday." He said, and quickly turned on his heel to head in the direction of his home.
Daisy watched him paused next to his father, before the man moved to the side and allowed him through the front door. She kept her eyes on trained on him, as he stared toward her with a look she could not decipher. After a moment, the man took a step back and shut the door with a loud bang.
The Fulton girl gave the home one last look and then climbed behind the wheel of her car. She sat in the driver's side as the car rumbled around her. Daisy lifted a hand to shift the vehicle into drive, until her phone chimed in the cup-holder set in front of the cloth center console. She grabbed the device and read the lit screen with a sinking heart.
