I wanna be the person you think that I am

A four year old Izuku Midoriya woke up extremely excited. The night before, the plant growing from his head had bloomed a flower which now acompanied his two small leaves. It was a flower with five, heart shaped petals, which were a bright red in color.

He couldn't wait to show his best friend, Katsuki Bakugou, or Kacchan.

He got dressed quickly, and rushed straight to the door. He didn't bother eating breakfast, as he just used photosythisis to feed himself.

Before he could leave, however, Inko called out, "Izuku sweetie!! Don't forget to take your mineral gummies and drink some water!!"

Midoriya sighed and trotted over to the kitchen, grabbing a water bottle, and a baggie of small gummy bears. The gummies only contained minerals, all of the ones he needed. He popped one into his mouth, and ran out the door with his backpack and water bottle. He didn't have any shoes on, so that way his roots wouldn't try to grow within the shoes.

Yeah, he had roots growing from the bottoms of his feet, although they were very small. Typically, he didn't really use them, as he never had the time (or, well, patience) too stand in a grassy area for hours on end, doing nothing but soaking up water and minerals that he could easily access without his roots.

He ran to school, grinning widely. It was a nice, sunny spring day, which only added to his energy as his leaves absorbed the sunlight.

The moment he got to the school, he ran up too Bakugou. "Kacchan!! Kacchan!! Lookie, I grew a flower!! See?" He babbled, bouncing up and down excitedly. Bakugou scoffed, "Flowers are for girls, Deku. You can play with me if you're gonna be girly!"

Midoriya froze up at the statement. He didn't want to stop being friends with Bakugou!! Bakugou had been his best friend for as long as either of them remembered.

Bakugou seemed to notice this, as he pulled a purely white baseball cap from his backpack, and placed it on Midoriya's head. "There. You can wear that too cover it up so we can stay friends!"

Midoriya grinned, and threw himself at Bakugou, engulfing him in a tight hug. "Thank you Kacchan!!"

Over the years, Midoriya grew more and more insecure about his quirk. Since the flower never went away, he almost always would wear the hat Bakugou gave him. He wasn't too woried about people thinking he was girly because of it. No, he was more worried that no one would want to be his friend because of his quirk.

Sometimes, when he was extremely nervous and no one else was around, he would make little doodles on the hat, reliefing his insecurity to some degree.

At some point, he started to see his roots as ugly, and began wearing shoes in order to hide them, even though it made his feet and roots very uncomfortable.

He stopped going to the cafeteria for lunch as well, for fear of being judged by the fact that he didn't eat normal, human food.

Basically, he did whatever he could to hide his quirk.

There was no real reason for it, either. It's not like any of his classmates made fun of him for it.

Then again, his classmates didn't know what his quirk was anymore. They just figured that he had a typical, useless quirk like an extra toe or something.

Due to the fact that he usually hid his flower and leaves, he barely had enough food to survive off of. The little plant on his head had stopped growing as well, now seeming extremely tiny.

On top of all that, he practically clung to Bakugou like a leach. An affectionate and caring leach, but a leach none the less.

Bakugou didn't seem to mind it, but Midoriya knew that it was unhealthy. And yet, he couldn't seem to stop himself.

Bakugou, who would occasionally make jokes about Midoriya's quirk, or sometimes even his insecurity in itself, jokes that hurt Midoriya. He knew they were meant as jokes, really. But, it still hurt him. However, he just laughed it off, pretending it didn't hurt at all.

Maybe there was a reason for his insecurity after all.

Midoriya sighed, staring at the hat sitting in his lap. He tried to mimic a smile drawn onto it, but he just.. couldn't.

So, he picked up the sharpie besides him, and began drawing. He avoided drawing anything that Bakugou wouldn't like, not wanting to lose their friendship.

That was... mildly upseting for him. He really wanted to draw a few flowers onto the hat, but he knew Bakugou thought they were too girly.

Instead, he drew little sketches of some heroes. Some of them were more popular, while others were lesser known to the public.

He smiled gently once he finished, proud of his little doodles.

He felt a little bit better now, at least.
