dear peter,
        i hope you're ok. i'm writing this not necessarily to give it to you, but because i need to get my thoughts out. i've been feeling sappy and lowkey hormonal lately and i don't know if that's a side effect of getting an abortion . . . but that's a story for another day. maybe i'll tell you about it in the future along with everything i'm about to say.

        this is my first new years without you since we met, and it feels weird. it's the last day in the year and i'm stuck here missing you. i don't really know what happened between us, but i'm sorry. i pushed you away because of matt and now i guess you're avoiding me. or maybe you've just given up on being my friend . . . which i wouldn't blame you for. these past few months i've made it extremely hard to.

        or maybe this is what you think i want? that you staying away from me will make matt happy, so therefore i'd be happy? i don't know what i want. i at least wanted you two to get along, i don't know why matt gets so jealous of you. maybe it's some weird, guy thing. or maybe it's because i'm closer to you than to him. or maybe he knows what i'm too scared to admit to myself, and to you.

        i don't even know when it started, but i fully realized it in freshman year on my birthday. we spent the whole day doing stupid shit across the city (and a bunch of stuff we swore to never bring up again for legal purposes!) and i remember laying my head down on my pillow that night and smiling like a complete idiot because of all the fun i had that day . . . until i realized that it wasn't necessarily the events that i was smiling about. it was the fact that i did them with you.

i didn't wanna believe it. i couldn't believe it, that i adored you from the very start. you with your cosmic brownies, and button up shirts, and cute sweaters, and kind eyes, and weird dreams, and obsessions with legos and movies way older than us. and it might be stupid and pathetic of me to feel this way, but i can't help it. you fill every one of my dreams and i feel like that makes it easier for me to fall asleep at night.

i'm still completely terrified of telling you how i feel. i could lose you if i did. i only got with matt and those other guys to help me move on from you so i'd never have to tell you, but it's really hard to move on from something i've been so used to feeling without even realizing it. we've been friends for so long, and i don't wanna mess that up. i still don't think i'm ready to say anything. so maybe it's better for the both of us if i just hide the truth.
